Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the "Blue Frog Mod" just a bad sprite swap? Does it effect the gameplay at all?

@generalbison: RockPaperShotgun has a great write-up on how it changes the gameplay. Sure, it's nothing more than novelty and is only a palette swap, but it does change how you play the game.

@generalbison: While yes it is a straight up sprite swap, the difficulty comes in that EVERYTHING is the same sprite so you may not know what something is. So a damsel next to a skeleton next to a snake next to a spider all look the same so you have to be a bit more cautious with how you approach things (leading to things such as killing the damsel when you want to sacrifice a live one)

The blue frog mod looks fun and absolutely impossible to play unless you've played a ton of spelunky. The fish game is interesting, I have no idea how hard it is to make flash interact with unity in that way, but it was pretty cool.

Henry Hatsworth is totally worth playing! For those looking to play it, it's a bit of a slow start, but you need that to get used to the mechanics when the game becomes super hard later.

But that's pretty amusing. When I first heard of the Blue Frog Mod, I thought it made every enemy a Blue Frog enemy complete with their annoying jumping patterns. Seeing it just reskin things is less interesting, but understandable. You still have to play a guessing game in each area.

@fear_the_booboo: That's a stretch. Instead of instantly dealing with it, you just hang back for a few more seconds than normal to realize that it's a yeti instead of a damsel, or a jumping spider instead of a snake.

I wouldn't call it a "mod" in the colloquial sense.

The Flash Player and the Unity Web Player both have the ability to communicate with the javascript on a webpage, so I'm assuming the Ludum Dare game is using javascript as the middle man.

It is a fun trick but it is not very practical for professional game development. Not only are you running two game engines as you pointed out Patrick, but you can't really test the game properly until you deploy both pieces to a web page. So one of the big advantages of Unity is that you can test your games within the Editor and you can tweak parameters on the fly, you could only build half the game like that.

The reality is that Unity could render the topside flash graphics itself fairly easily, which would be more efficient, faster to develop and could be deployed to more platforms. This is a fun idea to test during a game jam though. I kind of just like the idea of a 2D world interacting with a 3D world.

The difficulty would come from not knowing what enemy behavior to expect in later levels. I could imagine this being EXTREMELY dangerous in some levels.

Reskinning them is more interesting, in my opinion. Frogs are manageable and if everything is one enemy, you know exactly what lays in wait ahead of you and you can be prepared for it, leaving only the randomized layouts to challenge you. if everything looks the same but acts differently, than you have to change your entire approach to the game and adapt to the new rules.

Blue frog won me over when the arrow thing shot out a little blue frog. :D

@generalbison: since a lot of that game depends on identification of threats I'd say that all the enemies having the same sprite would effect gameplay.
