They're in space. How does a column of burning fire at 00:54 exist in space?

Also, is the X series big on you controlling capital ships (ie dreadnaughts, carriers, cruisers) and NOT on little itty bitty fighters/interceptors (ie every single space sim game except EVE)?

If you want capital ship combat I recommend the I-War series, the first two games focus exclusively on space dreadnaughts, while the last game (I-War 2, released in 2001) starts you off with interceptors but lets you fly capital ships later on. They are all available on GOG.

No Caption Provided

There's of course also Star Trek Bridge Commander and the infamous Battlecruiser 3000AD.

@kingschiebi: I totally felt compelled to make a couple of spreadsheets to play X3: Reunion. Only game I've ever done that with.

@beaudacious: The issue would be the amount of time it takes to play the game and the amount of your life it takes away from you and yes somewhat the sandbox nature where what you do is entirely up to you and there really is no story except what you make yourself. If I am going to play a game I want story that I can follow and get sucked into!

Good lord the art direction reminds me of Battlestar Galactica.

I might lose my entire life to this game.

Oculus Rift support on this.. I've always thought that space sims would benefit hugely from Track IR and stuff like that, but the implementation has always been just horrible, and often the space crafts themselves are clearly designed to look cool, not to offer any situational awareness in the cockpit. Glass dome-style fighter plane pits would feel amazing in space. So much..space..

Nothing in this trailer indicates a less complicated EVE, and it will be nothing like that.

I love the idea of being able to walk around inside the ship and talk to people and then just go seamlessly to the cockpit, but... only one ship? What the fuck

I believe it used to be (at least in the more recent X games), but it appears you can only control one ship in X Rebirth. With that said, you can upgrade your ship.

The one thing the X games completely missed out on that it sorely needs is a fucking TUTORIAL. In every single game it just dumps you out and literally doesn't tell you a single thing about how to equip your ship or get a quest or anything. For what, 5 games in a row now?

I bought all of them in search for that "tutorial". Surely one of these games actually held your hand a bit right? Nope. When I realized how long it would take me just to understand how to properly use my ship I was done. It's too bad because all of those games look awesome. I haven't found a proper replacement for Freespace 2 since, well, Freespace open source project.

I'm a huge sucker for being able to walk inside of your own space ship and possibly in weird space stations/cities to some extent. I also love a good space drinking establishment.

This looks bananas!! I was never able to get in to the earlier games but managed to git grips on EvE. This looks like it can be freaking awesome if its just has a bit smoother learning curve.

I truly hope they make controls better, more streamlined; all of the X-games I tried feels clunky and nearly EVE-Online in complexity. Now if this is more streamlined and easier to get into and understand then maybe...

Not to burst your bubble, Patrick, but unless they change a lot, the X series is definitely for crazy people.

The design goal for this one have been all about making it playable for non-crazy people.

http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=306346

"Complex=good, Complicated=bad

Let me get this straight right at the start. X Rebirth is not less complex or dumber than any of the X games of the past.

But to make a game intuitive and easy to learn, you have to design it from scratch. Adding features to a game that was not designed for these features at the start, is never perfect.

Designed to be fun and easy but complex and deep at the same time

This one line sums up the ethos of all the game design changes that you will read and hear about, namely:"

It's still definitely FOR crazy people, they're just trying to expand the audience.

Can't help but think I'd spend this entire game seeing other cool ships and wishing I could fly them as well. Best thing about Elite for me was slowly improving the ship you were flying. Does look amazing though (the scale video is well worth watching) but it's a bit of a downer for me to be stuck in the same ship for a game...

Egosoft has said that you will constantly be upgrading your ship. The ship you fly in the end will be drastically different from the one you have in the beginning. Here is an interview about the game if anyone is interested. http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=327997

@korolev: Pretty sure it's a developer doing the narration, probably the same guy from the Scale and Detail trailer. Its a small developer, I'm guessing they preferred it that way.

@mattgrant said:

Never heard of X until now. That in mind, clumped together with my healthy skepticism of Deep Silver, I'll try to keep my expectations in check. But if it turns out to be what that trailer "hyped"...

Well, gosh! It'd be incredible!

Egosoft has a solid history of doing these sorts of games.

This sounds like snake oil.

What makes you say that? Sure past X games have needed a lot of mod support to reach its potential, but they are still pretty solid if not time-consuming to learn.

Looks great, but it sounds like they hired a 20 year old guy off the street to do the narration for this trailer. It's not terrible, but it sounds a bit unprofessional.

I wouldn't say "non-crazy people." I would say it's very Eve-esque for non-sadistic people, however.

Also, ship/building destruction in space needs to be drastically modified. As fires don't burn in a vacuum. It would be cool to see your destruction leave a hole in the hull or wall and the shield covers the hole and you can see the fires inside the ship burning etc. Maybe see some people and objects sucked out into space before the shield seals the gap or whatever.

Yes, but if a ship is filled with oxygen and fuel that catches fire and explodes from within, isn't all of that going to burn off even if it becomes exposed to vacuum? It made be very quick, but it would still burn like a flash.

Something I feel I can say is that it looks like the design team did a great job illustrating depth of view in this game. I have almost never truly gotten a sense that I was somewhere really high because games never portrayed that too well, but at 1:02 I got that feeling. I bet this game would be amazing with O.Rift.

Still waiting for the game that lets me do all these things and get up from the cockpit and walk around my ship mid-battle or anytime I want. What could be more fun than piloting a giant cruiser into a battle, locking the command console, then running to an escape pod and ditching your whole real-person crew while they get slaughtered? Nothing.
