steam doesn't make you buy all of your games again every time you buy a new pc, though. the ps3 and 360 aren't like the older consoles. a) they're going to all break within the next few years. b) they're dependent on online capability for patching and dlc, and microsoft isn't going to keep 360 xbox live alive for much longer probably.

so within several years all those 360 games you own will be about as useful as paperweights, and less valuable (well, until people on pc manage to create working emulators for 360 and ps3)

You make good points but this point also still stands. Everyone talks as if Steam is the holy grail, while it does allot of things with DRM that people supposedly hate, but think it's fine if Steam does it.

His argument that Steam is overrated I stand behind, if you compare it to consoles. To name something, you need to alt-tab and manually restart downloads after you launch a game on Steam. Background downloads are integral to 360 when it first launched and Steam still doesn't have an automatic option for that today.

Don't get me wrong though, I think Steam is great for PC's and it was necessary to keep PC gaming alive and actually make it as big as it is right now. Steam does allot of things better like indie games' but consoles do allot of functionality better than Steam.

People who completely dismiss consoles and praise Steam can be a little more nuanced is what I'm saying.

People who completely dismiss consoles and praise Steam can be a little more nuanced is what I'm saying.

Steam does background downloads, it just depends on how Steam identifies the game. There are a specific subset of games marked as "offline" or "singleplayer" games that you can indeed play and let your downloads continue uninterrupted - or at least, that used to be the case. The problem is that most games on Steam today AREN'T flagged for that, for whatever reason - possibly because of leaderboards and other online functions built in to games. From my perspective, Valve probably asks publishers if their games connect to the internet, and if the game does, for any reason at all, regardless of duration, it refuses to download data during play.

That's not a huge issue, though - background downloads are essential on the Xbox, because my system is usually turned off unless it is playing a game. My PC, on the other hand, is on almost all day, every day. Steam has plenty of opportunities to finish downloads when I'm not using my PC to play games - the same cannot be said for my Xbox.

Going back to the original point, yes, Steam does everything this new Xbox does, but it's important to note that the Xbox One is also WAY more strict about it. Steam has an offline mode that functions up to a week without phoning home to Valve's servers. And last I checked, there's even a workaround that lets you use Steam's offline mode indefinitely (though individual games might still refuse to work without a connection, but that's no fault of Steam).

Steam's features provide the security developers want without being completely unfair to the consumer. That's an important distinction everybody needs to keep in mind.

Not entirely accurate. It wasn't until about eight months after launch before the 360 got the background download option. I remember sitting, and watching many a download progress bar when the console first launched (I will never forget the horrors of that GR:AW DLC download).

Has anyone discussed the concept of trading in games over some kind of Xbox live store? I haven't rewatched all the content so I'm unsure how much that was discussed.

The idea of being able to sell my game key for some kind of 'store credit' or other trade value directly seems like an interesting idea. If the goal is more eliminate the Gamestop reseller which cuts out developers and publishers while still allowing me to get some money back and buy a 'used' digital copy I'm fine with that.

I certainly have no brand loyalty to Gamestop that would ever inspire me to go back and shop there.

@blazehedgehog: Offline play is something that really annoys me about Steam. My PC usually takes maybe 10 seconds after everything loads to connect to the Internet, and if I have Steam set to launch automatically, it already tries to get online, fails, and starts hassling me about why I can't connect to the Internet. A couple times when I had a really cheap wireless card, it wouldn't connect at all sometimes (I've since replaced it) so I would have to keep restarting my PC until the card would work just to be able to access my games. I set Steam to stop launching automatically simply because of how annoying and insistent it is about logging in themoment my PC boots.

But honestly, the thing that bothers me the most is Steam's very existence. I miss having games as separate executables. I don't need some stupid hub for all my games. I already had that. It was called the Start menu. Or I can just make shortcuts or a folder or something. Regardless, I don't want to launch a program just to launch the program I actually want. My PC isn't very powerful (for example, it runs TF2 just fine, but I had frame rate issues playing Hotline: Miami) so it's really annoying to have to have another program running in the background, taking up my limited system resources.

I recognize that Steam has done a lot of good for PC gaming (and much more so for Mac and Linux gaming), but it just bugs me the way people complain about Origin and some of the Xbox One features and etc. that are already in effect on Steam that nobody seems to mind because Valve is above reproach just because people like Half-Life 2, sales, and hats.

I love steam, and while it has a couple issues I think you're missing something big. You can play games offline on steam. When my internet went out for a week from Hurricane Sandy I was still able to play my steam games (with the exception of a few that needed to be updated)...If the XBOX works like it is being advertised I wouldn't be able to play those games.

This sounds totally awesome. Too bad I don't care about TV, Call of Duty, or sports. As an xb360 owner it looks like I'm leaning towards the PS4.
