It's interesting coming back all these years later to see this now. Also funny how some things never came to the xbox one and how its a fundamentally different system now. I dont remember doing matchmaking while using other apps ever came to the console. Also all that EA footage was fake and the cloud stuff, at least the way they explained it, never actually happened. I just now wonder what things the series X and PS4 have said this year that will never happen.

A year into the system, it's interesting to go back and hear/read the initial comments and thoughts from the announcement.

The way they kept emphasizing "The new Xbox will be the ONE (insert household fixture)", then Patrick said he didn't understand where the naming of the console came from...

Patrick's REALLY dense.

Consoles should NOT run three operating systems partitioning the machine into virtual machines. Consoles should run one very light operating system for maximum performance.

@undeadpool: what are you talking about, never once has Steam required the internet to activate offline mode. I do it all the time...

How? The only way I know how to activate it, is to go to Steam > Go offline and then restart Steam. However, you can't even get to the basic Steam interface without logging in online first. Having to go online to select the option to go offline is not a complete offline mode if you ask me.

When you start Steam and there is no internet it says something to the extent of "No connection found, starting in offline mode" and then you're in.

How you lived your life without knowing this is beyond me.

I don't lose internet connection that often, so I haven't had to do it much. All I know is, a year or so ago when I did lose it, no such message came up. It just said: could not log into account. No option to start in offline mode.

How I lived my life without knowing this... getting a little dramatic there aren't you? You do describe it's beyond you... perhaps you're unfamiliar with the concept of knowledge in that you know things others don't and vice versa.

I guess the "how" would be that Offline Mode is notoriously unreliable and has been since it's inception? The latest wackiness is the fact that it straight-up stops working two weeks in (though apparently a fix has been in the works for ~1 month). I've simply never gotten it to reliably work for long stretches.

Patents get filed LITERALLY all the time and have nothing come of them (or even to block someone else from doing something nefarious with them). Until this is actually proven to be a "feature" (and I use that term loosely), I won't be holding my breath. This is yet another reason to NOT buy day-1, if something like this turns out to be true, you'd better believe it'll be all over the internet an hour after the thing goes on-sale (and about three weeks after, the mainstream media will get around to mentioning it).

@internetdetective:Exactly. This isn't an issue about piracy or anything like that: Microsoft is merely obfuscating their intent. This is about changing the fundamental relationship between consumers and products. Given that games are going to continue to come on physical media for years to come, this move is potentially catastrophic for Microsoft. Like you said, the pricing of digital media is a whole other issue. However, Microsoft cannot honestly expect to change this relationship under the guise of a new console generation. If anything, this change, though very much anti-consumer, must come over a drawn-out period, with reciprocal kick-backs for the consumer.

Advertising makes consumers very pliable, but the basic concepts of economics still apply. I'd wager that video games are rather elastic, meaning as their price and perceived worth increase, the demand for them decreases (as contrasted with necessities like gasoline). Microsoft is leveraging their customers' holdover loyalty from the 360, and I fear that it won't work. Well, actually, I hope it doesn't work, because even though Microsoft might not see it this way, the XONE is a test balloon for the industry's policies over the rest of the decade, and perhaps into the future. The pricing structure that we have today admittedly has to change, but not at the complete and utter expense of the consumer. Something's gotta give, but Microsoft is going about it the wrong way.

The Xbox one has chosen to make a bad first impression on it's core audience even if they were upfront about it. I understand that there is potentially a lot of money in the casual market, but they run the risk of losing the focus of the Xbox as a game dedicated console replacing it with the Xbox as some sort of "all in one" pc. I'm afraid that by trying to appeal to everyone they may do everything but don't do anything well, in particular gaming. Here's to hoping that sony doubles down on games.

@zevvion: I agree with a great many of these points and add in that the most common rebuttal to this (Steam has an offline mode) is off-set by the fact that you have to BE ONLINE TO ENGAGE IT. So if their servers (or, much more likely, my internet) goes down, offline mode is entirely worthless.

HDCP over HDMI is basically confirmed. Start saving up for a $100 24" computer monitor if you can't do the $40 HDCP stripper alternative and don't want to buy a new TV.

@gaftra: The controversy about charging for used games shouldn't have anything to do with Gamestop. Anyone shopping at Gamestop for anything other than a strategy guide or the $4 bin should know they are getting ripped off. This is about taking something you have purchased, and then becomes your property and doing what you like with it. you should be able to give a used game to your nephew without EA getting another taste because you already paid full retail $60 for the freaking thing.

Charging people a fee to play a used game makes no sense. The retail price of new games has steadily risen and I wouldn't be surprised to see Next Gen games clocking in at $70 or more. We are told that games are expensive because they are expensive to make and the company must make a profit. I have no problem with that. I do have a problem with a game company reaching into peoples pockets again and again and again after selling them a fully priced product. They already extend the profits with DLC and micro-transactions. Now they want to do it by charging for the same product multiple times.

Now keep in mind I am talking strictly about games sold on physical media. I have a whole other problem with the way pricing on digital distribution works but that's not what this rant is about. If I go to the store and buy something (a toaster oven, a dvd of Tai Chi Bloopers, an end table, an alarm clock, a Mylie Cyrus CD, a shower head or whatever), and then 3 months later decide to give it to my friend Bill, or even sell it to him for cheap I would not expect Bill to have to send the maker of the toaster company money to have it work for him. I already bought it. They placed an item on the marketplace, priced it so they could make a profit, sold it to me and profited. Now some people would point out that many games have online components that must be considered.

If I give you my old copy of Call of Duty 9 you are going to want to get online and use bandwidth and server time playing and that costs the company more money. In that case I would propose that there is a way to "deactivate" the game on my system to free up that "player slot" for you use. But you should not be charged a new fee for that. They lost 1 player and gained 1 player- there is no extra strain on the server and no need to charge you another fee. The game business is rough and gamers will put up with a lot of greedy bullshit in order to play a game but if this used game fee policy goes into effect I really believe a line will have been crossed that with cost them more money than it makes.

I wasn't very excited for some of Sony's services like the video sharing stuff but after this presentation I think my excitement doubled because I care almost zero about TV or fantasy football services. At least some time in the future I could see myself putting to use game streaming on my game system rather than ever watching TV on it (also, I don't have cable tv anymore anyway so the value there is zero for me).

I cannot stand the modern Microsoft. What the fuck was that presentation - a bunch of middle aged accountants trying to appeal to me by shoving adverts in my face of TV services I don't need and telling me to like EA fucking sports games.

PS4 for me, absolutely no doubt about that.

Everyone should turn this into a drinking game, because if they did they would be probably dead and buried in the ground from alcohol poisoning. Start from the beginning and every time Microsoft mentions TV you drink. You will be passed out in the first 10 minutes.

Is it too late for Microsoft to prematurely withdraw from the forthcoming generation and go back to the drawing board? That's a rhetorical--of course it is.

Don't you hate it when you have to press a button on your remote to list your inputs, for then to choose TV/games? No more! You can now use your voice, a growly one at that, since you drank heavily last night, to do the same thing! It won't recognize you, but hey, it's so fun todo that it doesn't matter! What do you mean you're not interested?! It's the future!

I have both an Xbox and a 360, but at this point, I will have to go elsewhere this upcoming generation because I do not want to get a console that inhibits my ability to lend, trade, or buy games that are used. That's an immediate deal-breaker.

Honestly, I wish Nintendo would get its stuff together because, as someone who prefers offline gaming at this point in my life, the most important things to me are the available games for the console that I choose and whether or not I can buy, trade, or give games to my relatives and friends (or sell them and buy them at a used game store). A Nintendo console with new Fallout, Saints Row, and GTA PLUS new Starfox and Kirby that does not restrict my use of pre-owned games would get all my money all the time.
