So, this will definitely be a double dip purchase for me. Day 1 i'm there on the 360 if it's not coming to PC/Nextgen within launch on the new systems. If they do ultimately announce a next gen version, I'll be there as well regardless of how long that takes to get out.

Bring on the heists!

I will maybe get it for the pc. I've tried twice since Vice City to enjoy a GTA game. Rock Star creeps me out anyways, though I liked Max Payne 3 and really meaning it, Manhunt (one play through). I guess I am not invested in playing the bad guy beyond a character I understood (Tommy), but I am old and tap a cane..

Guess I will wait for the PC GOTY addition a year later that plays better is more stable and allows modding, again. I was pretty bummed I never got a chance to give them money for Red Dead.

I'm actually replaying GTAIV right now in anticipation of this and because I never played The Lost and Damned or Gay Tony, and I picked up the complete edition at Best Buy for $15. Just playing a little bit of each character at a time, and even though the story lines don't intersect, it's quite fun. I think Rockstar's onto something here. And I gotta say, going through it the second time, I actually like the way the cars handle now. It takes some finesse to drive well. But obviously the shooting is still shit, so if they can fix that, this game is going to be amazing.

You should delete your original post, kind of a dick move spoiling a game that isn't out yet. Now I will just be expecting it and it wont be a surprise. Might want to put a spoiler warning next time.

Are you kidding me? I did spoiler it, in every post. Maybe you should delete your post, considering you're the one being a dick here.

I hope there is a lot of ideas from Red Dead in there, I found GTA 4 hard to play past the first 1/2. Where as I played RDR all the way through. I also hope that if I stick with Micheal I can have a more rooted in realty story, or that I can avoid most of the crazy stuff. I'll assume there will be key missions for each you have to play and that all the heists will have to be brought off, but I just want some choice in what I have to do for missions.

I assume by August 2014 there will be a PS4 version, but why wait. I'd rather play it once on PS3/360 for just the main game and then buy the GOTY edition for next gen.

Back with GTA IV's pc-version, my PC nearly caught fire because of how badly it ran. Probably 15-20 fps at tops, if even that...yet, I still played the hell out of it and enjoyed every moment. Bought the PS3 version later on as well, which was double the fun, even with it's 30ish framerate (still superior to what I got on my old pc).

So that being said, I definetly won't mind buying this for the PS3, if the pc-version's months off, but I'm really skeptic about how it'll run. I'll eat my own legs, if it ends up running as smooth as it does in those trailers, with how insanely big the game seems to be. Maybe with a five meter draw distance and that RAGE trick, which turns every texture way more blurred when you're not looking...but yeah, I sure wouldn't mind being proven wrong in this case.

I know a lot of people are wanting three player coop, but I would really love instead of that to have a multiplayer heist mode. Heists seems to be a very big deal in this game and multiplayer with a hint of coop would be really cool.

The slow down time stuff makes me think that they are putting some of the shooting stuff from Max Payne into this which will fix my biggest issue with GTA IV, so I'm totally in.

I really couldn't get into Redemption. I really don't see how anyone thought that game was great. Given how many people thought it was a masterpiece, it's obvious to me that it's just not my type of game apparently.

I loved the GTA series ever since GTAII. I loved GTAIII to death and back. I was still playing GTAII at the time it was released (at that time I didn't keep up with videogames as much as now) and when I played it my mind was blown. Vice City was even better. It was the same game, but every aspect was stepped up a notch, especially the vibe.

Then San Andreas didn't do anything special, the huge world made it tedious to get to where you wanted to go. I was disappointed. Then GTAIV... same thing I have with Redemption. I don't know why anyone thinks that game is good, but millions do, so I guess at some point they went in a direction that wasn't aimed at me. It's just that I can't wrap my head around how every single gameplay element in that game that was also present in Vice City, has suffered for the worst.

I try to, but I don't have an open mind about GTAV. Pretty sure I'll end up disliking it. Huge worlds are no fun at all in GTA games. It's not like a Skyrim where you find something interesting everywhere you go. It's just tedious getting around and especially doing 'drive from all the way here to all the way there' parts of missions more than once is ultimate suckage.

At some point the series I loved just tried to go for a different style and different audience. It's hard to let it go, so every time a new game comes out I feel compelled to say it's crap, while in reality it's just no game for me.

yes, they should come up with some contrived reason to write a female player character in to their story just to appease you.

I didn't get the impression that you'll be able to focus on playing more of a specific character -- each guy has his own story missions, and it seems like you'll have to do all of them to move the overall plot forward. So you'd run out of Michael missions at some point and have to go do the other guys' missions before the next act would start. That's how I interpreted what they were saying, anyway.

Thank you for reminding me to never read the comments.

But he's right. From a gameplay and story perspective GTA IV is pretty abysmal. I'd probably call it mediocre instead of "bad" though. It's as polished as any other Rockstar game. It just wasn't fun to play or experience.

Somehow despite all that I'm still looking forward to this game. Rockstar is one of my favorite developers.

Is GTAIV worth playing at this point? I've never played a GTA game and don't really have any affinity for open world games. I mainly want to check it out because I like the style that Rockstar has developed in its cinematics/writing this generation. Is the story (main game or episodes) good enough to warrant checking out? (Only asking case I keep hearing such strong opinions on the game, but since I have no context for the series, I don't know what to make of them)

GTA IV was technically a very ambitions game. The engine tried to do allot and it was a huge improvement over SA. The PC port wasn't too great either, but its way better on newer hardware. In the last few years some much better looking and shooting games have come out (Mafia II, Saints Row 3 & Sleeping Dogs) with more detailed and refined story telling mechanics. But I don't think its fair to judge GTA IV so harshly since all these other games are essentially iterations of the GTA series.

"

I actually loved the driving in GTA IV. It felt weighty, and grounded, like the cars were heavy and could do serious damage. My first reaction to the driving was negative, but after just an hour or so, I really started to enjoy it.

I hope they don't make the driving overall more arcade-y like in Saint's Row or Sleepy Dawgz. That certainly has its place and is good, but I'd like to keep GTA a liiiittle closer to the realism side of handling."

Yup! I agree completely! the cars were a touch too floaty but I love the feel of the driving in that game way beyond any other city-simulation game since. realistic car physics are essential!

If that is the case that is too bad. I just don't think I will like more than a few of the Trevor and Franklin missions. I may be wrong but it seems like Franklin is disgusted with his friends, so it seems like most of his mission will be trying to fix or escape from the shit his friends cause. Trevor's missions might be okay, but truthfully the whole 'mad dog' personality stuff stops being funny a long time ago. On the other hand, if the missions and the stories play out MORE like Read Dead I'd be happy.

@boozak: I was just in love with the characters of GTA IV(well some of them, some like Katie were awful), but the gameplay just felt limiting and passable way to experience the story, where as something like Red Dead always had something new around the corner, and things like the lasso had a bunch of cool little uses. Red Dead definitely kept blowing me away at all of the little details and systems in that game.

Arkham Asylum also was an incredibly impressive game, the worst thing I could say is that I didn't like the Gears of War-ness of the character designs.

P.S. Having stats set them apart more because you can develop them each in their own focus stats wise and thus they play differently.

@jace: I'm not a world-class driving/car enthusiast, but my view when driving never was beneath my bumper, because when driving in GTA IV I had to hold up on the stick at least slightly the entire time. That was not fun or "realistic", where as Sleeping Dogs' was not "realistic" (whatever that means in the context in an open world crime action game in which you can murder thousands of people with little to no penalty and other countless unrealistic things like flying out of your windshield and being able to just walk away) the ramming mechanic allowed for really fun gameplay and added depth, finesse, and flexibility while driving that didn't make you rely on having to shooting and driving at the same time which has never been that great. Obviously GTA IV's allows for a different kind of depth, it is the difference between a really deep fighting game like Street Fighter, Marvel, or Tekken and then a really well made/deep UFC game or something.

That being said, I have never cared for simulation driving games (though I did drive all "proper" when playing GTA IV), so my taste for driving in most games may just be different from yours. I'd rather playing a game in an arcade-y almost speedrunner kind of way rather than in a Flight Sim type of way.

That part doesn't make sense to me. Are you saying your camera had to be in a place you didn't like because of the way you held your analog stick? I don't understand.

No, the camera by default when driving was so far down to the ground behind the car, like at the bumper, I had to hold the analog stick up somewhat constantly to have a more proper view. Though I heard the expansions fixed that, but I was so tired of GTA IV I didn't care to buy them.

You realize in the original game you could change the camera position and angle while driving with the press of a button, right?

I'm sorry but I can't take anything you have to say seriously at this point.

@jace: You could? What button was it? And I'm not talking about clicking in the stick to get the cockpit view and stuff like that. That's really strange I played the hell out of that game, and I am one to fiddle with options in every game(I do recall fiddling with the saturation stuff in that game quite a bit.) As well I remember watching the Ballad of Gay Tony Quick Look and them mentioning that (or some aspect of the driving) being adjusted. If the option was there, I probably did adjust it at some point and don't recall because it went from a problem to a non-problem and the negative part of the memory stayed and the part when it became a non-issue was just passive and forgettable.

Also this was 5 years ago and that game was super long so yah.
