I would assume they make a good deal of money licensing their engine like Epic does with Unreal. It seems I hear a decent amount of games running on it when they are mentioned in QL's and such.

It's great that some of Vigil is staying together, but man I hope Crytek picks up Darksiders.

Yeah, while I'd probably prefer it if Vigil went on with a new IP, it would be sad if Darksiders ended up in some legal limbo like with System Shock and the old Wizardry games, and becomes unavailable to purchase for future generations. I didn't play Darksiders II, but I think the first game was really interesting, maybe even historically significant as a very blatantly Zelda: Ocarina of Time inspired game, but taking that style in a direction Nintendo wouldn't.

You did a good thing, Crytek. You did a good thing.

#104 Posted by dreamkin (54 posts) - 4 months, 21 days ago

@EmuLeader: Not 6... Crytek has, as of now, 9 studios. 10 if you count Heidelberg as a separate studio333

This is such an awesome move, I love everybody.

Darksiders 2 was such an underrated game. The story was complete garbage, but if they can get a decent writing direction for a new one, I'll be all over that. Darksiders 2 just felt like they were too scared to do anything crazy to the roles of the characters in the fiction.

#109 Posted by Cybexx (928 posts) - 4 months, 20 days ago

Good for Crytek, they saved Free Radical too, but we haven't seen anything come of that yet. That makes 9 Crytek studios by my count.

They developed the multiplayer for Crytek 2 and are working on the multiplayer for Crytek 3. They are also developing Homefront 2. So they are doing something, maybe not what we want them to i.e. Timesplitters 4 but hey, something.

I expect Vigil to do the same, just additional work for Crytek's franchises.

Thats great news! Felt kinda bad for them when they just got left in the gutter.

Too bad for those still out of a job, though :(

PS: Crytek produced Darksiders?

Snatch it up Crytek!

#114 Posted by Berserker6666 (19 posts) - 4 months, 20 days ago

Capcom should grab Vigil games. Then we can have four horsemen and Dante fight against the hordes of demon.

#115 Posted by hermes (751 posts) - 4 months, 20 days ago

Good to hear. The lost of franchises is bad, but the real sad part of these news were talented people losing their jobs.

#116 Posted by kagato (662 posts) - 4 months, 20 days ago

Im glad those guys got snapped up but now the future is even more uncertain for Darksiders, even if someone does decide to pick up the license the core team is gone. Crystal Dynamics are the only other team i would trust with the series but dosent look like Square is interested in buying.

#117 Posted by arimajinn (149 posts) - 4 months, 20 days ago

sad ... no more darksiders

#118 Posted by arimajinn (149 posts) - 4 months, 20 days ago

Vigil will have to make now F2P Crysis :(

Crytek Scoops Up Ex-Vigil Staff for Austin Studio

I do also hope Crytek picks up Darksiders IP, it's secret project (something involved an evolved combat system from the previous Darksiders) sound interesting.

Perhaps also the licensing of CryEngine 3 might give them the extra cash flow. Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2, Warface, MechWarrior Online, Star Citizen, Nexuiz, Evolve to name a few.

A boy can dream again of amazing dark fantasy action adventures, of the ilk of Darksiders! May the dudes that founded Vigil continue to create the games they want to make, and lighten the burden of my hours.

I knew they licensed their engine, I just didn't think they did it enough to account for all the studios they had. But who knows, some of those studios could be very small groups of people who are only there to offer technical support to licensees in the region

Give Darksiders to NetherRealm. Come on, WB. You know you want it.

#123 Posted by gogosox82 (368 posts) - 4 months, 20 days ago

This is pretty cool. I just picked up Darksiders 2 and the game is awesome. Don't know why so many people are down on it. Maybe they'll be able to get most of the team back together and do darksiders 3.

Crytek is actually a front for the Turkish mob, we reap the rewards of all that laundered money from all that quality hashish they ship in from the mid east.

#126 Posted by dvorak (1444 posts) - 4 months, 20 days ago

I think they should just make another game like darksiders, with the team, and forget buying the license. It's not like the fiction is anything worthwhile.

I don't think the Four Horsemen are registered properties, given that they're religious/historical figures. Unless you mean Vigil's Four Horsemen.

Good to hear at least some of the people aren't going without work. Going to be interesting to see what they do next and where the darksiders IP ends up.

Good to know, its good that they have work. It would be nice to see Vigil continue work on that prototype they've been talking up recently but Crytek doesn't have the rights to that, at least not yet.

So the active known Crytek projects are: Crysis 3, Warface, Homefront 2 and Ryse (still on their website but may have died a quiet death).

Update: Crytek CEO, Cevat Yerli confirmed in a Gamasutra interview that Crytek is not intending to purchase the Darksiders IP.

Instead, Yerli stated, "It would be pretty much safe to say that this team will be working on online games." He added that Crytek USA will focus on "online games and kick-ass triple-A productions."

"It is going to be quite a significant investment for Crytek over the next five years."

shame i really liked the first one but not  second game, am sure thay will come up with something new and good, fresh start and all.

#134 Posted by dreamkin (54 posts) - 4 months, 20 days ago

@Cybexx: Ryse still exists and is being actively developed. Trust me on that. It also looks awesome.

Good on Crytek for doing this, the Darksiders team is capable of so much it'll be interesting to see what they come up with next.

I think they get a lot of money from licensing out the Cry engine like what Epic does with the Unreal engine.

And still no word on a new Timesplitters. How very disappointing Crytek. I feel absolutely no hype regarding either Crysis 3, Homefront 2 or Warface. It is nice to see someone has picked up Vigil, albeit partially, but I suspect that even EA would do more with such talented developers, rather than placing them at the clutures of a developer working on several poorly realised FPS projects.

Great! I just figured with the lack of enthusiasm around Kinect titles that it had just disappeared into obscurity.

Nope it did not disappear. It's an important title for both Microsoft and Crytek. Sadly I cannot say more without risking getting fired. ;)
