    Overview

Violence Fight is a 2D belt-scrolling fighting game developed and released by Taito for arcades (using Taito B System hardware) in April 1989.

Set in the United States during the early 1950's, the game involves an underground fighting tournament known as the "Violence Fight". It is the earliest example of a one-on-one fighting game that incorporates the belt-scrolling movement system from beat-'em-ups such as Double Dragon and Renegade.

It later received an updated overseas-only sequel two years after the original, titled Solitary Fighter. The original game was later included in two Taito compilations: the 2005 Japan-exclusive Taito Memories Gekan and the 2006/2007 Western-exclusive Taito Legends 2. It was also included in the 2022 Japan-exclusive Egret II Mini micro-console.

    Gameplay

Violence Fight is a three-button fighting game, two for attacks (Punch and Kick) and one for jumping (Jump). While the controls are self-explanatory, they are also used for some advanced techniques:

    • Pressing the Punch button near an object (such as a barrel) while holding the joystick backward causes the character to pick it up. Pressing either attack button causes the character to throw the object at the opponent.
    • Pressing the Punch button at close range while holding the joystick forward causes the character to throw the opponent over the shoulder.
    • Pressing both Punch and Kick buttons together initiates a crouching dodge.
    • Each character has two "mortal techniques", which are done by pressing Jump together with the Punch or Kick buttons. These are stronger, but slower attacks.

Throughout the main game, players can fight bonus rounds against a tiger. Winning these rounds allow the player to boost their effectiveness of a particular stat.

    Characters

The game includes four playable characters, two boss characters, and a bonus round opponent. The single-player story progresses through the three remaining playable characters, followed by the two boss characters, then the final boss: a mirror match opponent against the playable character's "younger brother".

    Playable Characters

    • Bad Blue - A reputable street fighter from California, and serves as the story's main protagonist. Average all-around stats. Sometimes misspelled "Bat".
    • Ben Smith - A former U.S. Marine from Nevada. He is the most agile of the four, despite his less effective attacks.
    • Lick Joe - A former professional wrestler from Oklahoma. He has the most effective ground attacks, despite his lack of agility.
    • Lee Chen - A kung fu practitioner from Florida. Focuses his attacking power on kicks and jump attacks.

    Boss Characters

    • Ron Max - A burly farmer from Texas, who tends to ram his opponents like a bull.
    • Tony Won - The head of the criminal syndicate "Black-Will-O" and a prospective winner from New York, who goes to cheap lengths to win (even using a chain whip).
