Inspiration for The Character
The creation of Violette Summer was largely inspired by that of Violette Szabo, or to give her full name, Violette Reine Elizabeth Bushall Szabo. At the age of 23, Szabo took part in two undercover operations in Nazi-occupied France during the Second World War. Although her first mission was a success, Szabo was wounded and captured by a Nazi patrol on her second mission just after the D-Day landings. Following failed attempts by the Nazis to interrogate her in Paris, Szabo was transported to Germany and after some time spent in labour camps was eventually executed in the early months of 1945 at Ravensbrück Concentration Camp.
Born of French and English parents, Szabo was posthumously awarded for her courage with an MBE, the George Cross and the Croix de Guerre.
