Overview
In some games, particularly first-person shooters, developers often add a special effect over the player's vision to give it a movie like quality and immersiveness. These effects can be aesthetic like dirt when the player is close to an explosion or blood sprays when you wound another character nearby. Sometimes they can serve as gameplay mechanics. The most common types include the screen glowing red when the player takes damage or the screen giving off a wavy green effect if they are poisoned, obstructing the player's view (this concept is very similar to Damage Flash).
