Volleyball

Overview

Volleyball pits two teams of six players against each other. Some key parts of volleyball include the serve, set, and spike. The serve initiates the rally, the set "sets" up another player to spike, and the spike is an attempt to ground the ball on the other team's side by hitting the ball really hard. Members of the other team try to prevent spikes by jumping with their hands raise in an attempt to block the spike directly. Volleyball is both a men and women's sport that is played at the Olympics.

History

Volleyball in video games has an interesting history. This is mainly due to the fact that beach volleyball is extremely popular. Early volleyball games treated it like any other sport. But with beach volleyball also comes ladies in bikinis jumping around and hitting things. This eventually led to games like Outlaw Volleyball and Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball, where it seems as though the developer wants to lure in video game players not with the sport of volleyball, but with women in minimal clothing bouncing around. However, some people did enjoy the DOA Volleyball game, as many liked the actual mechanics of playing volleyball. It should be noted that most everyone did not enjoy the sequel, Dead or Alive: Xtreme 2. Volleyball's presence in other games are usually relegated to being a mini-game in a sports collection game, such as Mario Sports Mix and Sports Champions. In most of these games, the hitting, setting, and spiking of the volleyball is usually the focus, while the movement is automatically done for the player.
