Extraterrestrials appear in many video games in a variety of styles. Sometimes they're evil, sometimes they're benevolent, and sometimes they're very similar to humans.
Games based on tabletop (AKA pen and paper) role-playing games, such as Dungeons & Dragons or Vampire: The Masquerade. These can have any type of gameplay, as long as they are set in the tabletop game's universe.
A proprietary video codec (.bik/bk2 extension) developed by RAD Game Tools and used in a very large number of video games.
Often used as a catch-all term for any game's main story-driven mode of play, campaign mode usually refers to a linear sequence of levels with a continuous story and a definite conclusion, playable single-player and sometimes co-operatively.
Characters that do not speak the localized language within the context of the game. An example being everyone in Persona speaking English while the story states that they are speaking Japanese.
Digitized sprites, popularized in the early 90s, were a form of graphics that used footage of real actors, Stop-motion frames of a figure/clay model or 3D renders of characters that were then made digital and put into the game.
Any game that represents a society noticeably worse or less desirable compared to those in the present. This can relate to kinds of political and economic organisation, excessive human suffering, social problems caused by technology, or as a result of an apocalyptic event.
The Eldar are the oldest living race in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Analogous to Elves, they have "psyker" powers far beyond those of the younger races, and often use their far-sight and guile to manipulate the younger races to ensure the safety of their own species.
A digital distribution platform that focuses on providing DRM-free computer games, both old and new.
A six sided geometrical shape sometimes used in strategy, puzzle, and board games.
An numeral indication of how much damage a character can sustain. The loss of all hit points results in the death of the character or another penalty.
These games are based off of established licenses, such as movies, comics, or TV shows. Examples are the James Bond 007 and Spider-Man franchises.
Games that used 3D polygonal renders of CGI characters/objects for it's sprites and graphics.
Two or more factions, either with the same or completely different goals, that constantly try to one-up each other. The player is sometimes forced to pick a side to root or work for during the struggle. Other times the rivalry is only mentioned in the plot.
A two-dimensional image or animation overlaid into a scene. The foundation of early 2D games, making up everything from props to the player-controlled character.
Gameplay type emphasizing deliberately paced tactical battle where each side politely takes turns moving and attacking one another through varied forms of combat.
Turn-based games divide game actions into distinct parts, called turns. This gives the player time to strategically choose actions as the battle or events unfold.
An alien race that travels from galaxy to galaxy, consuming all living matter it finds and harvesting its genetic code in order to evolve.
