So, I will be buying Space Marine soon, I was going to get it on Steam, but wanted to know what the online community is like, is it still thriving on PC?

To those on the 360 version, what's it like there? I will be making my purchasing decision (between 360 and PC) based on the current strength of the community, the new DLC that was announced that allows a Horde-style mode to be played as Chaos really interests me, and since none of my friends are into it, I will be relying on randoms.

    Thanks.

I haven't played in about 2 weeks but on the PS3 version it was always a full game. I really wanted to try out the new horde but have been damn busy, I'll probably check it out on the weekend. (Sorry if this is a mess I'm typIng from my iPhone).

I play the PC version. I bought it on Disc but it still runs through Steam, and I got a golden chainsword out of it, so that was pretty cool. If you have a decent PC, the game looks gorgeous, and from what I've played there are still plenty of people playing; just make sure you're not blocking any connections while searching for a game or you'll run into issues (learned that the hard way; turn peerblock off). Overall it's pretty great and the community is still there, with some thanks to the constant big upgrades Relic's making.

Not really played in a week or so... but a week ago, there was no problems getting into Exterminatus or Seize Ground matches on PC. Never really tested Annihilation.

I only played online on my 360 once. Seems like there is a dedicated, albiet small, fan base. Unfortunately that meant wading into a group of high level players and getting torn up. The single player is great, and I love the Warhammer 40K fiction, but I wouldn't buy this just for multiplayer.

The MP is really shallow. 2 Modes (TD and King of the Hill). 3 classes - with a bunch of weapons, though. Once you unlocked all the weapons and perks you kind go "meh". It's really not very complex. The melee class ("Assault") is quite unique though, and while the melee combat is not very challenging (you hit one button until the enemy is dead - at most you throw in a "breaker") chainswording a dude in half is oddly satisfying.

Buy this at a reduced price for the Single Player if you are a 40k fan.

@Wuddel: I am a 40K fan but as I've been hearing 8-10 hours as the average completion time, I would like to play the multiplayer as well.

As long as there is a reasonable amount of people playing to get some enjoyment out of it, I'll pick it up, I don't like buying a game late and find there is literally no-one online to play against, otherwise I'll wait and see if it is a part of Steam's Christmas Sale.

EDIT: Apparently Space Marine isn't even being sold on Steam in the UK..........................excuse me while I go and vent.

@BrockNRolla: Oh no not at all, I love the 40K fiction, but when I heard the multiplayer is OK I'd like to try it out as well, what I was asking for was basically, if there wasn't a reasonably sized multiplayer scene any more the amount of money I would be willing to pay would decrease.

@Hulsey90: There's quite a lot of activity. Relic recently released the free DLC for the game "Exterminatus" which mirrors the popular Last Stand mode from their previous release; "Dawn of War 2", and this has dragged many a people back to the game. It's a worthwhile and challenging co-op mode in it's own right, as well. The game is fun, there's no doubt of it, and with the promise of much more free DLC in the near future such as additional maps for Exterminatus, as well for the normal MP, there's going to be a decent amount of longevity to the title.

It's also gotten quite popular among certain Mod circles, so I suspect 40 K fans will be playing this in one form or the other until Dark Millenium is released in 2013.

I would suppose the release of "Battlefield 3" will have drawn some sworn brothers away from the light of the Emperor, such as my own self, but there's plenty of people still playing it. Hope that answers your question, mate! Have fun, and DEATH TO THE FALSE EMPEROR!

There still seems to be full games going when I jump online on 360. I'd recommend you pick it up, great single player, multiplayer is a lot of fun and all three classes are totally viable (owning an assault marine in close combat with devestator stomps and kicks is the best thing ever.) and Exterminatus mode is finally out. They just announced new maps coming for mp too. Also the ability to play as chaos in ext. People who willingly choose chaos however will suffer the emperors judgement at my hands. Filthy heretics...

@TheSouthernDandy: Your conscience is guided by a pile of rotting bones draped in gold, do you yourself not see the contradictory nature of your own faith? You speak of free will as a sin against an ideal that exists nowhere but in your own broken consciousness, lapdog. As for you, @Hulsey90: you have but traded one false diety for another. Chaos is a tool, the Emperor was a fool, but this even he understood.

It does not matter in the end, my brothers, you are all fallen, you are all pathetic and you are all hated. Our hate is our sustenance, yet there will be no victory, but there will be blood and screams in the night and you will know, we are come for you; not with foolish hopes of forlorn justice, but with will and means to prove our martyred father right. For vindication is worse than death. AVE DOMINUS NOX!

@Ravenlight: Yeah, I wish I still had the money to keep building my Chaos army (I serve under Khorne with a custom Legion) but alas it is too much, I am enjoying the Horus Heresy series (Book 3 is arriving tomorrow!).

I love the surrounding fiction of it.

Hearing Vinny talk about that series on the 'cast made me want to pick them up but I've been putting it off. Maybe I'll get myself a Kindle for Christmas and load it up with those books.

@Ravenlight: They aren't on the Kindle I'm afraid, though they are pretty small books so they aren't terrible to hold, the first one is fantastic, the second isn't as good but still pretty damn awesome, highly recommended.

Night Lord during day time, shady guy hanging around parks in a batman costume during the evenings. Only reason I still keep a girlfriend and a job is because the costume is quite tight, if you know what I'm saying.

@Ravenlight: Why, thank you, I'll remember your kindness if I ever find myself writing a "who needs to be shot" list as a means to pass the time. Regarding what Hulsey said about the kindle, I'm pretty sure they are on the kindle, duder. There's E-book versions of just about everything at blacklibrary.com, easy enough to convert to .mobi files these days anycase. There's a plethora of war porn to be found, and I've got to say, I'm an avid reader, mostly explore the social depths of Murakami and Tolstov's writing, yet I find myself really, really enjoying the 40 K literature. It's a nice break from the heavier stuff, though it is in no way dumb. So many great series, and I may come off sounding a bit biased here, but I'd recommend the Salamander trilogy, as well as the Night Lords series above anything else out there, right now. Though one cannot with good confidence say that the Horus Heresy is anything except brilliant.

Oh, I never knew it would actually work on the Kindle so I was scared to buy them, though I really like the cover art of the books, I'm going to keep getting the physical copies.

Save your inane ramblings heretic. I'll not be swayed by a corrupt diseased slave. The light of the Emperor exposes your promises of "freedom" and "power" to be nothing but lies, the hollow promises of a fool. In the end you're only a tool of the Ruinous powers and when they're done with you, they'll cast you off, leaving your soul to be tormented for an eternity by those you pledge devotion to. However, you need not fear that day heretic, for I'll save you the suffering. My brothers and I will cleanse you and all your debased, misbegotten kind with holy fire! In the name of Vulkan and the Emperor!

edit: also, i second your recommendation of the Salamander stuff. Just finished Nocturne. It was awesome.
