Warhammer 40,000

The Warhammer 40,000 universe is a science fantasy tabletop game created by Games Workshop. The most successful transition to video games has been the Dawn of War real-time strategy series, from Relic Entertainment.

Concepts

A.I. Companion

An AI companion is a computer-controlled ally who follows and aids you through your adventures or who requires your protection. The AI companion's survival is often essential to game and story progression.
Achievements

Achievements are extra challenges added into video games that sometimes carry a point value or unlock bonus material, and are sometimes solely for bragging rights.
Action Points

The value that determines how many events can take place in a character's turn in pure turn based combat as well as in the modern Fallout franchise.
Active Ability

This is an ability that requires input from the user to be used.
Adeptus Astartes

Superhumans crafted from the Emperor's genetic code, the Space Marines are the strong-arm of the Imperium of Man in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
Adeptus Mechanicus

The Adeptus Mechanicus is a technological organization, holding a monopoly on technological knowledge in the Imperium of Man in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
Aliens

Extraterrestrials appear in many, many video games in a massive variety of styles. Sometimes they're evil bloodthirsty invaders, sometimes they're adorably cuddly sidekicks, and sometimes they're very much like us.
Alignment

Gameplay system where choices in actions and dialogue affect the alignment of the protagonist on a spectrum toward opposite poles. Changes in alignment often modify the course of the narrative, player abilities, and gameplay options.
Ambush

When the Bad Guy(s) are lying in wait to attack the Good Guy(s), either as part of the game's plot or as a game mechanic.
Ancient Advanced Civilization Technology

This concept occurs in many RPGs and Sci-Fi games. The Ancient Advanced Civilization Technology is often a giant weapon (Halo Rings, Giant of Babil, etc.) that becomes a major plot focus in the stories of these games.
Anguish

The physical and mental turmoil that a person may encounter as a result of a traumatic or otherwise extremely stressful situation.
Apocalypse

Usually refers to the end of the world.
Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, commonly refers to the programmed behaviors of NPCs in a game, whether it's the fact that a soldier takes cover behind a wall in Gears of War, or that townspeople cheer upon your arrival to their village in Fable.
Artillery

First starting out as simple machines throwing stones, artillery has evolved greatly and is an important weapon in war.
Attributes

Attributes are a numerical representation of a character's abilities who have their roots in RPGs. Today, attributes have spilled over to a wide range of game genres.
Audio Logs

Audio logs are short voice recordings that a player comes across within a game that helps inform the player of the game's story and characters.
Avatar of Khaine

The manifestation of the Eldar god of murder.
Bald Space Marine

Bald Space Marine is the concept in many shooters that the player's character is a generic blank slate with no or little narrative development. Recently parodied in TimeSplitters and Matt Hazard. Also exemplified by limitations in technology.
Been Here Before

When the player character (re)visits a certain area or location that was also present in a previous game, or visited later on in the same game, with some alterations.
Betrayal

Betrayal is when a person breaks the trust and faith that others have placed in them.
Bink Video

A proprietary video codec (.bik extension) developed by RAD Game Tools and used in a very large number of video games.
Black Legion

One of the nine traitor legions which betrayed the Emperor and embraced Chaos.
Black Templar

A Chapter of Space Marines formed in the Second Founding of the Warhammer 40K universe.
Blood

Necessary to sustain life in organic creatures, the crimson fluid known as blood tends to make appearances when the body's structure is compromised in some way, a very, very common occurrence in videogames.
Blood Ravens

Space Marines chapter featured in Relic Entertainment's Warhammer 40,000 series Dawn of War.
Boss Fight

A boss fight is a culminating challenge that pits the player against one or more enemies representing a greater threat and/or difficulty than those previously faced. These scenarios typically feature unique antagonists.
Boss Killing His Henchmen

It's when a boss kills his own henchmen to let you know that he means business.
Boss Rush

When you fight all of the bosses of the game at once. Can either be an optional mode, or it can be forced on you at the end of the game (see: Viewtiful Joe, Mega Man, Gunstar Heroes, etc).
Bosses

Video game bosses are usually the main antagonist, and arch nemesis of the main protagonist. In most cases the end of a game is when the main character defeats the final boss.
Buff

A Concept mostly in MMORPGs. A Buff allows the player to increase their stats for a short period of time.
