Brian Fargo, Alan Pavlish, Mike Stackpole and others reunite for a sequel to their hit 1988, post-apocalyptic CRPG Wasteland. Wasteland 2 is fan-funded from a successful Kickstarter campaign.
I had a lot of fun with just the character creation, since it has custom portraits and a great deal of flexibility, so I want to see the Rangers everyone else is rolling with. I made a couple "normal" teams at first but here's the one I ended up with:
I just made whatever comes into mind (and looked up the portraits with Google Images), but I did try to make the party balanced. Ninja is good at melee and lockpicking, Lindsay Lohan is the healer, Nic Cage is the leader/talker, Marie Curie is the sniper and other knowledge skills expert. I should have given Marie Curie energy weapons, but I completely forgot about it. I didn't put much effort into their bios since I like to leave it open-ended (i.e. I'm too lazy to think of a good backstory =P).
Anyway, please share your characters and their stories if you have any!
Haha, that's pretty great! I just used premades for my "testing shit out" initial run, but when I remake my party for the real runthrough I'll have to do something like this.
Senor Cardgage: Energy weapons, high charisma persuade-y dude. Wears a sombrero. (I'll just interject here and mention that I think Energy Weapons aren't so hot, at least this early in the game when most of your enemies don't have very high armor)
Professor Professorson: Resident lockpicker/safecracker, wields a mean SMG.
Sveltana: Russian lady sniper and team weaponsmith (which seems like a useful, if not exactly vital skill).
Doc: Team Field Medic and demolitions expert with skill in both Shotguns and Assault Rifles.
and some NPC teammates who basically cover the skills I don't already have. Like Toaster Repair and Computer Science.
I didn't realize I could upload pictures... that would have allowed me to avoid my current annoying situation of having an NPC in my party with the same portrait as one of mine. But anyway, I used the in-game portraits and made:
Jericho: A former sheriff whose town was razed by bandits while he was out hunting rustlers with a posse. He's out for revenge, but the decent kind. (Handguns, fisticuffs, repairs (toaster included), leadership, backup surgery)
Silk: A french lady with a light touch (Sniper rifles (though I treat her more like a noncombatant), lockpicking, safecracking, alarms, ass-kisser, bartering)
Jade Sky: A Native American medicine woman who's gotten with the times (medicine, surgery, blades, shotguns, computer science, perception. I gave her a point in safecracking because I was thinking stethoscopes, then I screwed up and gave that to silk)
Lug: If it's not about weapons, don't talk to him. If it is about weapons, still don't talk to him. (heavy weapons, weapon repair, demolitions, blunt weapons, ass-kicker)
I think long term it's going to seem as if I spread them a little thin, but at the moment I can open about anything, even if I've gotten away with a couple hard checks I probably shouldn't have.
@thunderslash: Holy cow, I am in awe. How do you make custom pre-made Rangers? I tried making my characters with the custom option, but it doesn't add them to the list.
@audiobusting: On the character sheet in which you do all the cosmetics stuff (name, bio, model, portrait) there is an option to Export your character on the right hand side of the screen. The button is like right underneath the Randomize button.
I love that your Nick Cage has a website watermark haha
This is a great idea. Whenever I play this I have to remember that.
I'd probably use Arnold Schwarzenegger (from Predator), Bruce Willis (from Die Hard), Jean Claude Van Damme (from Bloodsport), and Uma Thurman (from Kill Bill). Ya, that'd be an awesome post apoc team.
I chose three of my team off the peg and created one all-rounder as "my" character, who I named after my cat, Jackson. I'm new to this RPG lark, what can I say...
@arbitrarywater: Holy shit, we made basically the same team.
Murphy is the leader, he's a chucklehead with a top hat and a moustache, a revolver and a degree in Toaster Repair. He's USELESS.
Kara is a blonde Swedish lady with a sniper rifle and a bad attitude. She is clutch.
Jacques is a big African dude who is also our medic. He has few kills but has a ton of damage dealt because he's also packin a shotty.
Amir is the tech and ingress guy, who uses an SMG and an assault rifle. Amir is 15 years younger than everyone else and has dreads because I wanted to use that one portrait. Amir is somehow the best member of the team despite being too spread out.
All that said, I didn't min-max dudes much at all, and I think that might be my downfall. I don't feel strong enough to do the next part and it might be because I didn't roll anyone with attributes over 6. But now I'm attached to my dudes.
I had 3 hours played by the time I actually started playing the game because of fiddling around with the character creation so I'm more than happy for an excuse to share my party.
Hayat: As a nomadic wasteland technician Hayat is handy with the machines of the old world that litter the wastes. Hayat lost the life he had built with these skills along with his family when he was robbed and left to die in the desert. In the radioactive dust he lost his faith but found the Rangers and with them a new sense of duty.
Major skills: Computer Science, Mechanics, Smart Ass
Minor skills: Barter, Submachine guns
Ghostie: The Arizona wilderness is white with the bones of self-described outdoorsmen. Those that survive long enough to actually earn this title are individuals well equipped for today’s America. Ghostie is one of these individuals. Eyes for detail and ears for danger are talents that serve her well among the Rangers.
Major skills: Outdoorsman, Assault rifle
Minor skills: Animal Whisperer
Maria: Despite the rotten state of things some people still just want to do good. Maria is a self-taught doctor and practicing Buddhist. Though moral she is a practical woman and both her medicinal practice and belief system have been altered to fit the world she inhabits. Sometimes a shotgun can save more lives than a suture.
Major skills: Field medic, Surgeon
Minor skills: Shotgun, Lock-picking
The Eagle: Some people crave meaning in their lives. Many die chasing after a purpose. This is not a problem for the man who insists on being called “The Eagle”. For him a good day is a day he carries a big gun. He carries one every day. Half as funny as he thinks but exactly as strong The Eagle is a Ranger of supreme enthusiasm.
Major skills: Heavy weapons, Hard Ass, Demolitions
Ah man, are there preset portraits in the game? I didn't realize you could change that. I just used the "snapshot" thing and have the pictures of the ugly 3D models. Grr..
Also, I didn't know what the naming conventions would be of this world so I went with kinda normal names. And I didn't come up with any backstory stuff.
Jess
My designated team leader. Issues orders to the point man (Derek). The one I control and engage in conversations.
Her primary is a Sniper Rifle which gives her a good vantage point over the fight . Secondary is a Combat Knife if something gets up close.
She also handles the Alarms, Safe Cracking, and a little Computer Science.
Derek
The pseudo second-in-command. He is the dude relaying and issuing orders on the front line.
His primary is the Assault Rifle and secondary is a Axe.
He has a little of the Leadership trait but mainly handles the lockpicking, weapon dismantling and customization, and can do some minor healing.
Reck
The heavy. The muscle. The pack mule.
His primary is the Shotgun and secondary is Heavy Weapons and chucking explosives. Can also sock you in the face if needed.
He handles the heavy lifting with Brute Force, Demolitions, and Mechanical Repair.
Steven
The medic. The hitman.
Primary is Submachine Guns. Secondary is Pistols. Both weapons are equipped with suppressors. He deals in the smaller caliber weapons.
Obvious, but he specializes in Field Medic and Surgeon.
Current other NPC members:
Vulture's Cry
The treehugger native.
Primary is Sniper Rifle. Secondary is Pistols.
Is very Perceptive. Can also talk to animals.. which has been almost entirely useless thus far.
Lexcanium
New recruit.
Punches things and hacks robots I guess? He's an afterthought in the party.
Mostly used for his Computer Science skill and carrying more stuff.
No one has any conversation related characteristics or Bartering or anything which I'm curious about whenever I see the grayed out dialog options.
