That would have kept the Wii branding strong, without having your console name be fucking horrible.  I don't care how much the guys believe names don't matter, or how silly they thought Vita and transfarring was.

I'm totally over it, much quicker than I got over the name of the original Wii. Now that was a terrible name but I got over that and so did pretty much everyone else, so I really don't think names matter that much.

Maybe because people would assume it's targeting the exact same audience as the original Wii when their goal is clearly not that. Makes sense to me.

Nintendo's way of thinking is that putting a 2 at the end is toon redictable, they like to deviate from the normal rules. I think they would say this is not the 2nd attempt at Wii, it's a new philosophy for Wii so it gets a new sub-brandname. However if I was brand manager it would have just been: Nintendo Wii II. Or: Nintendo Wuu :)

As far as the OP, it's a dumb name but at least they had some reasoning behind it as opposed to just saying "wii u....why the fuck not".

For the same reason Xbox called the sequel Xbox 360. Because then the name has a marketing spin. Calling it ........ 2 just says this is the second version, but using a word or another number allows you to say something about the console. What the vision is, etc. I'm not saying I like this method, but if you're a marketing guy, I can see that making sense.

Wii U, wider and deeper. That really should be the slogan for it.

Wii U is likely not going to be the next ten year platform for Nintendo. Sony and Microsoft are past the halfway point for their systems, and could decide to release its next iteration anytime within the next two to three years. Whatever the big two release, it will likely destroy Nintendo's Wii U in a technical standpoint. Nintendo needed something to fill in the gap to stop the diminishing returns of the Wii, but need to hold their heavier punches until the other two actually release their next system.

Its likely the Wii 2 will exist, but not until the next Xbox and Playstation are out.

Playstation 3 is the problem with Wii 2. It's also the reason we have Xbox 360 instead of Xbox 2. Stupid people will look at the box at retail and say "Well this one has 2 and this one has 3, so the one with 3 must be better, right?"
