I was just reading what is just a rumour, no fact, no source, that Nintendo are thinking about changing the name of the Wii-U. The main reason (if true) is the experience with the 3DS and how it confused the market that is was just another DS. I don't really see how that works as we had the GB, then the GBC and then the GBA and I don't recall this coming up before. My only issue with the 3DS is that they should have taken a more radical approach to design to make it look completely different. Perhaps the Wii-U should look at that major design change itself.

So, if you were in charge of Nintendo, knowing that the finest gaming minds in the universe reside here, what would you call it? I know there will be some usual Nintendo hate-fest amongst this, but I am really keen to see what the brighter minds can come up with.

I honestly don't care what they name it, as long as it's not Wii U. It's taking their naming scheme and the reasoning behind it too far. I highly doubt Nintendo will name it something semi-normal and descriptive after the Wii name worked so well for them, and I can understand them not wanting to leave the Wii branding behind since that's what the majority of their mainstream audience has latched onto. So really, the only logical thing to do at this point is probably to call it the Wii 2.

I don't see how the name Wii U is going to speak to their casual fanbase, most of whom probably don't follow things like this terribly closely. When they hear the name, are they going to think it's an entirely new system, or are they going to think it's just a newer model of the Wii they already own? How many of them are going to actually research this? I suppose word of mouth could do the job for them, but it seems like a bad idea to have word of mouth do all the work when a more straightforward name would cut through a lot of the misconception on its own.

someone I know (previously exclusive PC gamer, now transitioned to a PS3 'cause he was tired of the hassle with PC crashes and hardware upgrades) actually believed this was a portable system because to him it looked "just like a white Vita". that was in a forum thread with tons of pictures of the device and embedded videos with the TV screen etc.

that means Nintendo really needs to get the message across that this is a brand new home system.
