Its an actual console.Is that not the Wii?
Wii U
Platform »
The Nintendo Wii U, the follow-up to the monstrously popular Nintendo Wii console, launched in North America on November 18th 2012.
WiiU
That was super confusing for about 15 minutes - I had no idea whether it was even a new console or not. It seems to solve a bunch of very specific problems I don't have ("Time to watch baseball on this TV you're already using!", "Darling, why the fuck have you come to bed to play on your console?").
@Ghostiet: Nintendo loves their word-play!
Wii = We
U = You
We, You... not really sure what they're trying to say... damn hippies...
Yes, I know what they are trying to invoke. This doesn't change the fact it's dumb as all shit.
Also, in my language it sounds like something you yell to make your horse ride faster. So yeah.

I'm not 100% sold just yet, but darn, what other developers are showing now, I'm impressed.
I agree...I'm sold on the PS Vita but, gonna hold off to see what the pricing will be and how many First/Third Party games there really are Wii-u. Sure they already have an impressive line up but, we're still probably at least a year til launch to see where Nintendo takes this.
I don't understand all the hate for this system. People bitched that Wii games weren't good enough. Now Nintendo has something potentially cool with HD graphics and ports of games that seem more or less the same as their PS3 and 360 counterparts. Sure people who have a 360 and PS3 will most likely play on those, but it doesn't mean this isn't a cool console. Nintendo will create games that make the console worth it, just like they always do.
I will agree that the name is super dumb though.
this is the new console:
the thing that confuses me is that they only showed the controller! and it seems to work with the old wii?! or can you buy the old wii-motes and use it for the new wii. from the name, it looks this way. but HOW can they not talk about their new console? is it not ready yet? their still thinking of features and just wanted to show a god damn new console before they lose the console race and everyone sells their wii? now there's maybe a new purpose for it. hm. i'm really confused by that information dry press conference. they should've spend the money for 30 minutes more stage time.

please dont kill me mods.this is just too perfect to post right now XD
Is the whole movie that obnoxious?
This is how a lot of people reacted to the DS and Wii. Good stuff.
Anyway, I will be getting this launch day. Incredible possibilities here.
I thought the Wii name was fine and I was kinda over bad system names (a la Vita) but Wii U is a truely awful name.
The system itself actually looks pretty cool. Things were looking dodgey for a while in the actual game department but they wheeled out all of those PS3/360 games and it convinced me, kind of. I shall adhere to the old adage of "only time will tell".
I was kind of hoping I wouldn't have to use those Wii controllers for anything but Wii games. I really really don't like using them for shooters so I don't see me wanting to play Battlefield or anything like that on it. Also important is that this console surely has to be more powerful than the 360 and PS3 right? They have to be giving themselves some room or MS and Sony will smoke them again on graphics with their new systems.
if they keep the third parties and there online is decent then great... if not ill buy it for the first party titles.
if it was encrusted with gold and had specs of consoles from the year 2050 the internet would still moan

I think their strategy for all the plastic junk is to not make consumers buy more peripherals for the new system. It's actually a pretty good overall strategy for the two consoles. People will still have all their crap from the Wii and be able to use it on the WiiU, and people who want it can use the controller on their existing console if they don't want the whole thing yet. It seems really consumer friendly to me considering what they could have done, which is to make new versions of shit for everything.
Thing is, it's something that the PS3 and PSP/Vita could do now, and something that MS could throw together in a few months. While the idea goes back to the GBA and GC connectivity regarding Nintendo's original idea, it's nowhere near the leap that Wii's motion controls were.
And for the HD graphics of it, it's already obsolete. By the time it comes out we will already be looking at the new platforms from Sony and MS. Until we see specs and just how powerful the console is, It's got Gamecube 2.0 written all over it.
I'm at the 1:30:00 mark and I don't understand what it is.I don't understand all the hate for this system.
What this madness is, I don't even know. I'm guessing it's Nintendo's attempt at "merging" Home/Portable gaming. Anyone remember when they did this with Crystal Chronicles?
I am cautiously optimistic. I guess we will see what happens over the next year. Promises are great but we need to see in practice first. Now I regret selling my wii remotes last weekend. :/
@Brendan: Yeah, I see that. But the Wii remotes were pretty crappy for most types of games though. And the tablet looks really big and maybe uncomfortable. Was hoping there would be some regularish controllers thrown in or something. I don't know. I'm pretty conflicted on the whole thing. Maybe more confused than anything. Need to see actual games that use that tablet well and not just for inventory or whatever.
Man, remember when Nintendo just made consoles with normal controllers?
Also Wii U is the worst name for any console, they only named it that so the mums and grannys will see it and go "Oh the Wii was great, so I'll get this". Or it will go in the opposite direction and all those grannys and mums will be like "Oh the Wii U, with a screen on the controller, which is like a Wii mote, but can be...This is to complex for my mind, I'm going to go play Wii Sports". If the second option goes down this console will be a short lived one.

True, I am pretty skeptical about the new controller as well. I would need to try it in my hands before I would be sold on it. It seems to run the same risk as the Wii control scheme, where third party devs can't make heads or tails of how to make the best use of it, and we're left in the same situation as last time where the only times where we feel like we get the appeal are from Nintendo's franchises.
if I was a nintendo-only fan, as in someone that just gets nintendo systems, i would be fucking worried right now.
you just KNOW that as soon as the new sony/Ms systems are out in 2013, or 2014 the latest third party support for Wii U (that matters i mean, not shovelware shit like Wii) will drop fast. Oh and of course, if you only have nintendo systems, you only have a Wii... so for the next 12 months you get Zelda...thats it, nothing else was announced or even shown, theres 1 game until Wii U. I guess thats just business as usual for the Wii but still...damn >_>
I just...I just don't see what this brings to the table. As hardware. A screen in my controller? Okay...I don't see much point but okay. Everything else is standard for this console era. I already have a PS3 and a 360 so that 3rd party support for the Wii U doesn't really appeal to me. There's the exclusives. Zelda, Mario, Metroid. I was never much of a Metroid fan though and Mario is Mario. So that leaves Zelda. I just...I just don't see myself getting this. I see myself getting a 3DS before a Wii U and I don't particularly see the point in 3D. I dunno, it kinda seems like a DS/3DS with the TV as the larger screen and the controller as the lower screen but I can't actually take it around with me. :/ This is just me though. I'm sure plenty of other people will buy this and, with Nintendo selling them at a profit, they'll make loads of cash.

ok. this looks damn sexy. man, i have my bachelor in 2012 and hopefully earn some money. then i'm getting this because i can play all the other multiplatform stuff on it AND the nintendo games. which were ALWAYS the most fun games.
still. the press conference was super confusing with the whole "not talking about the console" thing. the first time you heard console was from peter moore in the interview part.
@Br3adfan: Yeah agreed, also this whole thing makes no sense to me, a console/tablet/whatever it is.
The Gamecube was actually superior to the competition, that didn't help it in the least. Unless Nintendo changes how it deals with third parties and acknowledges how people actually use the internet to play multiplayer games, no fancy controller or modern graphics will make a difference if that doesn't change.

Nintendo will never be able to compete with just normal inputs anymore--not unless they almost entirely win over every major third party again, which seems unlikely since Nintendo tries to focus on "fun" and "family" rather than high-performance tech.
What are we going to call the system? I just got the new Mario game on the Wii U? I'm playing Zelda on my U? With this and the 3DS I think Nintendo have gotten too far up their own asses with this "new age" shit.
Game developers aren't creative, Nintendo. None of them are going to put these multiple inputs to any good use, just like the Wii. A regular controller with a touchscreen and mic/camera would have been more than enough. Aside from a few extreme cases, no fucking 3rd party games are going to make me put my U controller on the floor or use the gyroscope. Should've focused more on the online components, which will hopefully be somewhere in the Xbox Live ballpark, but I'm not holding my breath.
