I bought a gamecube controller to play with Mario Kart Wii. I read online (from 2008 articles) that the classic/gamecube controller is gimped and only the wiimote properly works. What gives? Am I doing it wrong, or is Mario Kart Wii truly gimped?

The Nintendo Wii is a home video game console released on November 19, 2006. The Wii's main selling point was the innovative use of motion controls that its signature Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers allowed for. It became the best selling home console of its respective generation of hardware.
A question about Mario Kart Wii and Gamecube Controller.
" Thanks for all the help guys! One last question. How do you get the controller to work in single player? Whenever I try, it does nothing and only works when the wiimote is plugged in. "I'm not sure on that one. Check the manual, but I think you have to hit start on the gamecube controller on the title screen.
" Up on the d pad is ... the wheelie for motorcycles. "Man I realized Nintendo was a little backwards when B came before A on the controller... but that's just amazing. As somebody who always plays with the Y-axis inverted on analog sticks, that just makes my brain want to bleed.
" @Claude said:That's why I played it with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, much easier to pull off, just a little shake. I tried using the Gamecube controller and that wasn't for me."
