Has anyone bought any Virtual Console Arcade games?

#1 Posted by Emilio (3380 posts) -

Well, they've been out for a long while, and I really don't understand why there isn't a huge catalog of them, but I did just download Ninja Gaiden.
I've never played the arcade version of NG, only the NES games, but wow... its like a really neat beat 'em up.
Also, the options to change arcade settings are neat.

I was mostly put off  by the VCA games because they were usually priced more than their console siblings. But now I kinda get it. Its like paying an arcade tax for better graphics, sound, and gameplay (at times).

I'm just hoping Namco pump out more games and that hopefully all the Midway (RIP Midway) arcade titles come about. I'd gladly pay for my third copy of Smash TV or Gauntlet on Wii.

SO, back to the topic title. Have you guys bought any of the VCA games? How does, say, Goldex Axe and Altered Beast compare?

Helz no!
No, I bought Ninja Gaiden as an NES game, otherwise maybe I would have. But I haven't ever really been much of an arcade game kind of guy.

I bought Cave Story on wii and I am really considering buying River City Ransom since it is the greatest brawler of all time.

I've owned 4 Wiis and have bought at least one Virtual Console game for each of them.
Wii #1 - I bought Mighty Bomb Jack, Super Mario 64 and Zelda II: The Adventures Of Link.
Wii #2 - I bought Gates Of Thunder and Paper Mario; I think something else but I'm not certain.
Wii #3 - I bought Bonk's Revenge and WiiWare games Alien Crush Returns and Bubble Bobble Plus
Wii #4 - I bought Castlevania X: Rondo Of Blood from the VC and Nyx: Kindred Spirits from the WW line-up.

Looked through it and couldn't think of any to buy.

I mean I love Cave Story but I played it already.

And I thought about the two My Life As A... games, but Sqeenix is too harsh about the DLC. Fuck overpriced add-ons.

Edit: Oh, Arcade games only?

Unless Capcom does D&D: SOM, probably never on any system.

If you count River City Ransom, then yes.  I have others, but River City Ransom justifies any Virtual Console purchase.

I don't know about you, but I'd rather have a legit copy of Vagrant Story on my PSP than a hacked one.

Vagrant Story is a PS1 game, available over PSN.

Also, Virtual Console requires the Internet to download games. So anyone answering "yes" obviously has the Internet. Same with anyone who answers "no", because Giant Bomb is a website. About video games.

I don't see why anybody would pay 500-600 for an arcade game in the VC. It's not exactly a stellar line-up. Maybe Ninja Gaiden arcade since you can't get it anywhere else.

I bought a few, Act raiser, Mario 64, um a few others that was around launch then I realized after a year I wasn't playing my wii... *like all most from launch except mario galaxy to completion and twilight princess* I sold my wii...sadly at that time nintendo hadn't implimented the VC and Wii ware redownloads so I can't retrive the games I paid for any more on the Wii I purchased last year for 100.

I haven't bought any of the arcade games and I don't plan on it.  I'll stick with MAME.

#22 Posted by Emilio (3380 posts) -
@JJOR64:
Bu-but you can play two players... on a TV... :(
#23 Posted by JJOR64 (18881 posts) -
@Emilio:   I can just hook up my computer to my TV then.    :P

I bought Gunstar Heroes and one of the Bonk games because I never owned/played those in the past. Very fun games!

Yeah, but you could have gotten a free version of Toe Jam and Earl.  But hell, at least you got Muscle March, right?

Sometimes the arcade version is better than the home version.  There was a time when home consoles were intended to play arcade games at the home.  There were, at times, issues that made the arcade version superior to the home console version.

Space Harrier has proven to be one of them.  There also sometimes a prefered version of a game.  So there are reasons why someone would pay for those novelties.

If you own the game, a popsloader rehash is still legitimate, despite what Sony press would have people believe.  It's valid via 'fair use' laws and even Sony couldn't beat Bleem! when they used screenshots of emulated games on the back of the Bleem! box.

True, but how many people would you say that have downloaded Final Fantasy vii on their computers have a PS1 or PSN copy? I'd wager at that number being in the 1-10% range. And TrophyHunters reply doesn't instill a lot of confidence that he buys copies of games before downloading them.

Back to the discussion of Arcade Games, I'd really like for Nintendo to whip out the ol' Donkey Kong on the VCA service.
I don't understand why Capcom, Konami, and Sega havn't popped out more games. Or at least any mention on future plans...

Yeah, I agree. The NES Donkey Kong is nowhere close to arcade perfect. They need to bring the arcade version of Donkey Kong to the Virtual Arcade. They did have it as an unlockable in Donkey Kong 64.

However, in regards to other companies doing the same, they believe the compilation is the way to go.
