Why do people think 2008 was a bad year for the Wii

It always struck me weird when people complained about the year of 2008 being a bad year of the Wii.  It seems that the 2008 E3 conference rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.  There were a lot of games that came out in 2008 worth playing.

Also to be noted  asterisks represent software exclusive to the Wii.

Meh, every year is a bad year for the Wii... especially with a year-long list like THAT.

#3 Posted by License_To_Bill (792 posts) -

An awful lot of those are multiplatform.

And an awful lot of those were not good games. Certainly not as good as what the 360/PS tripple had to offer.

A lot of games are multiplatform.  Even contemporary exclusives are bound to be ported to other systems.

#6 Posted by Budster (134 posts) -

It really wasn't a bad year for the Wii, just that nintendo should of spread out it exclusives more, especially Smash and Mario kart. But hey I think ubisoft is trying to redeem itself with red steel 2, hopefully they learned their lesson from Red Steel.
I think this year will be a good year for the Wii, atleast way better then the years of the gamecube man

#7 Posted by Drebin_893 (2926 posts) -

So many of those games are junk.

#8 Posted by Claude (16254 posts) -

I owned and played about ten games on that list. I see about ten more I would like to play. I thought it was a pretty good year. I had me some fun, would still like to see a nintendo published core game, but hey maybe this year.

#9 Posted by Endogene (4741 posts) -

Ha i actually played 37 of those games, in retrospect i guess it was a pretty good year. I only recognize a few actual stinkers on that list.

#10 Posted by SpinCookie (680 posts) -

There weren't that many first party titles, that's why I own a Wii.

#11 Posted by Knives (711 posts) -

Wiiware was really the only thing that saved it for me.

SpinCookie said:

Exactly. I've accepted the fact that post-SNES Nintendo will never have good 3rd-party support, so where are the first party games? I know, they take time to develop, but nevertheless it equals a bad overall year, despite some gems like Okami and NMH.
#13 Posted by Meowayne (6084 posts) -

SpinCookie: If you cannot enjoy a good game when it doesn't have familiar IP characters attached, you fail.

It does  seem like a very random list, though. But still, I own 9 of those titles.

#14 Posted by Gmanall (1683 posts) -

If that was all that would be released that would be fine but thrown in the mix is 90 party or mini games, also some of toughs were remix(Mario Cart, Okonie )

Name ten.
#16 Posted by Diamond (8634 posts) -

lol listing all the individual strongbad games.  just seems kind of wrong, at least list them in order.  I have 16 of those if you count the 5 strongbad games.

The problem to me is the only titles I really loved in 08 on Wii were Mario Kart Wii, William's Pinball and Boom Blox, and I've only played like 3 hours of Boom Blox max.

What matters to me is GOOD games, not just having lots of games.

#18 Posted by CoolDrMoney (1978 posts) -

Of the games I would want to play on the Wii, only 5 were released in 2008 (No More Heroes, LostWinds, Mario Kart Wii, Boom Blox, Blast Works)

As far as my tastes are concerned, the 2008 Wii lineup was very underwhelming in comparison to the PS3 or 360 lineups

9?

I know there are some more but can't come up with their name at the moment. Pong toss not really a minigame collection just a bad game, trivia: pongtoss was 1000 points in the US on release, 500 in japan.

edit: hmmm looks like that game was 800 in the US

Yep, my thoughts exactly. I would love to say that I enjoyed my Wii in 2008, but I just plain didn't. I can count on one hand the number of games that I thought were 3 or greater quality, and it makes me sad :(

List Updated

#24 Posted by LordAndrew (14430 posts) -

Is this just a list of every game released for the Wii in 2008? Not the best kind of list to prove your point. Focus on the actual good games.

#25 Posted by Milkman (17201 posts) -

I can list games too. That doesn't mean that they're good.

#26 Posted by Dalai (7057 posts) -

The Wii had a great 1st half of the year, but a so-so 2nd half when compared to other consoles.  I still say 2008 was a good year for everyone, but you didn't need to list half of the Wii's 2008 lineup to try to make a point.

#27 Posted by clarke0 (1077 posts) -

Seriously? Kung Fu Panda? Family Trainer? RUBIKS WORLD?!? Maybe it was a bad year because most of those games were BAD.

#28 Posted by AgentJ (8778 posts) -

Uh, Godwind, you didnt exactly make a great arguement for the Wii. Some of the games on that list are good, but there are an awful lot that should never been in the same sentence as the word good, let alone with the phrase "good on wii". There are certainly good games on the wii, and only the most dense are denying that. However, many of those came out at the beginning of the year, leaving all of quarters 2, 3, and 4 almost completely barren.

#29 Posted by animateria (3253 posts) -

Considering most of those games are rubbish.

I would disagree.

#30 Posted by Black_Rose (7785 posts) -

Some of those games are great, but others...

You are not exactly making a good point there, the Wii had a great 1st and 2nd quarter, but the rest of the year was shit, even I have to admit that.

I am going to disagree.

World of Goo was in the 4th quarter.
Tetris Party was in the 4th quarter.
Bomberman Blast was 3rd quarter.
MaBoShi was 4th quarter

All of these are later in the year.

Those are only 4 games, and all are on Wiiware. for most people, those dont count.
#33 Edited by Al3xand3r (7574 posts) -

Why wouldn't games that are rated as AAA everywhere, like World of Goo, not count...

There was De Blob and Wario Land too later in the year.

Al3xand3r said:

Dont shoot the messenger. The point is that people are looking for an Okami or an SMG or or Madworld, and while De Blob and WarioLand were that kind of game, it was too little for 3 quarters.
#35 Edited by Al3xand3r (7574 posts) -

Meh, screw whoever thinks WiiWare doesn't count then, might as well go all "dood, platformers don't count" and get rid of De Blob and Wario Land also, or whatever other genre was released >_>

#36 Posted by Godwind (2597 posts) -

If the same list was designed for the Xbox360 and PS3, there would be a nice list of crap on it as well.

The multiplatform thing isn't always true (madden anyone?) and disaster day of crisis is actually a lot of fun, but otherwise your point is well taken
#38 Edited by Al3xand3r (7574 posts) -

And still no World of Goo in that "narrowind down" despite it being such a critically acclaimed title. Godwind overdid it mentioning too many games that aren't so good, but taking it to the other end and ommiting games one feels like just for the hell of it, is no better attitude.

PES 08? My Life as a King? Wario Land? Lost Winds? Strongbad? Endless Ocean?! Chocobo's dungeon was a surprisingly good title also. You don't exactly have much choice when it comes to dungeon crawlers, and it's basically its genre that kept it from getting even higher marks, as it's not everyone's cup of tea. Just a few examples here, I'm tired of going through lists.

#39 Edited by damnboyadvance (4061 posts) -

I'll admit Nintendo did START pretty good, but their holiday season was a bust, despite their sales. But change the list dude. Some of those games need to be taken off. Endless Ocean wasn't that good unless you're a 10 year old girl who's never heard of an Xbox 360.

Besides, like half of your list is based off of Wii sales.

P.S. Most of your "Wii exclusive titles" were produced by Nintendo themselves.

#40 Posted by Arkthemaniac (6535 posts) -

-Pro Evolution Soccer 09
-Star Wars: Force Unleashed
-Guitar Hero: Aerosmith
-Spideman Web of Shadows
-Blitz the League 2
-MotoGP 08
-Sega Superstars Tennis
-Quantum of Solace

Let's start breaking this list down.  Since playing games on an Xbox360 will provoke it to brick, lets just say it is better to play multi-platform games on other systems.
-Gears of War 2 (Eventually to be ported to the PC)
-Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved
-Fable 2 (Might be ported to the PC)
-Viva Pinta: Trouble in Paradise
-Castle Crashers
-Ninja Gaiden 2
-Poker Smash
-Tale's of Vesperia (Eventually to be ported to the PS3)
-UEFA Euro 2008
-Banjo and Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts
-Naruto: Broken Bond
-Lost Odyssey

-Aces of the Galaxy
-Meteos Wars
-Easy Golf
-Ticket to Ride
-Namco Museum: Virtual Arcade
-Golf: Tee it up
-Biology Battle
-Go! Go! Break Steady
-Infinite Undiscovery
-Schizoid
-Lost Cities
-Shred Nebula
-Too Human
-Dance Dance Revolution Universe 3
-Elements of Destruction
-Baja: Edge of Control
-Shotest Shogi

Now looking at this list, games such as Too Human exist on it and other filth, so lets chop the list down.
-Gears of War 2 (Eventually to be ported to the PC)
-Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved
-Fable 2 (Might be ported to the PC)
-Viva Pinta: Trouble in Paradise
-Castle Crashers
-Ninja Gaiden 2
-Poker Smash
-Tale's of Vesperia (Eventually to be ported to the PS3)
-UEFA Euro 2008
-Banjo and Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts

A lot of these games are either going to ported over to another system such as the PC, PS3 or Wii.  So lets take those games out of the list.
-Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved
-Viva Pinta: Trouble in Paradise
-Castle Crashers
-Banjo and Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts

That gives players 4 titles to be excited over.  Not exactly killer apps.  Looks oddly casual for a system that is suppose to be geared to the "hardcore".

Now lets give a look at the PS3's line up of games.
-LittleBigPlanet
-Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
-Valkyria Chronicles
-WipEout HD
-Resistance 2

-Star Wars: Force Unleashed
-Guitar Hero: Aerosmith
-Spideman Web of Shadows
-Blitz the League 2
-MotoGP 08
-Sega Superstars Tennis
-Quantum of Solace

Considering that multiplatform games look worst than Xbox360 games thanks to the brown the PS3 adds and the are likely to receive ports later, lets eliminate multiplatform games since Microsoft gets them first.
-LittleBigPlanet
-Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
-Valkyria Chronicles
-WipEout HD
-Resistance 2
-PixelJunk Monsters
-Sing Star
-PixelJunk Monsters Encore
-MotorStorm: Pacific Rift
-Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds
-Echochrome
-Metal Gear Online

-Savage Moon
-PAIN: Amusment PArk
-GTI Club +
-Sing Star ABBA
-Elefunk
-Alone in the Dark: Inferno
-Dark Mist
-Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars

There happens to be a lot of junk games placed on this list, so we should cut those down as well.
-LittleBigPlanet
-Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
-Valkyria Chronicles
-WipEout HD
-Resistance 2
-PixelJunk Monsters
-Sing Star
-PixelJunk Monsters Encore
-MotorStorm: Pacific Rift
-Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds
-Echochrome
-Metal Gear Online

Since the Playstation 3 is not a children's toy but a multimedia hardware, we shouldn't consider children as valid consumers on the PS3
-Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
-Valkyria Chronicles
-WipEout HD
-Resistance 2
-MotorStorm: Pacific Rift
-Metal Gear Online
So that leaves 5 games worth even considering.

Thanks to the Wii's short lived novelty controls, that same can be said about Sony's dualshock 3/sixaxis controller.  In addition, we all know dual analog sticks are bad way of utilzing guns.
-Valkyria Chronicles

So that leaves the PS3 with only 1 game worth getting.

Of course this list I just made is utter crap.  A list based on normal sterotyping on how games are meant to be played or preception on video gaming for their respective consoles.
#46 Posted by Meowayne (6084 posts) -

Stop the system wars. Nobody needs comparisons. Those who have both consoles don't care, and those who can or want to only have one console don't care either. It's only those that need to justify purchases that are interested in comparisons, and those only talk nonsense and anger.

So yeah, what you said was pretty much his point Meo, ridiculing that extreme attitude of "narrowind down" titles in such biased ways, by showing them how it'd look if someone did it for the other systems... I don't see anything system warsy about the OP.
