Titanfall is a multiplayer first-person shooter set in a futuristic world filled with mech-suits and spaceships. It is the first game from Respawn Entertainment, a company founded by former Infinity Ward heads Jason West and Vince Zampella after their termination by Activision. The game was directed by Steve Fukuda (previously a lead designer for the Call of Duty series up until Modern Warfare 2) and produced by Drew McCoy (who also worked on Modern Warfare 2). Titanfall launched exclusively for Xbox One and PC on March 11, 2014, with the Xbox 360 version being pushed back from a scheduled release of March 25th to now April 8th, 2014. The Xbox 360 version is developed by Bluepoint Games.


The story appears to be centered around a member of a roaming space fleet caught far from home on the edge of explored space known as The Frontier. Through exploration, scavenging and salvage, the fleet seeks a new home for itself but encounters opposition from enemies with similar intents.


The Interstellar Manufacturing Corporation (IMC)

A mega-corporation built on Titan manufacturing materials, planetary survey technology and map database rights. Seeing the Frontier as a ripe for exploitation, the IMC is dedicated to maximizing their profits and shareholder wealth and will not shy away from the legal application of force when necessary.

The Militia

A citizens army representing the military arm of the Frontier systems' territorial defense pact. The Militia is comprised of a loosely governed mishmash of homesteaders, bandits, mercenaries and pirates. They are opposed to the IMC who they believe does not act in the best interest of the Frontier locals.


Multiplayer provides traditional matches between two opposing teams. Players start the match on foot and, as they complete objectives or earn kills, are eventually able to have their mech dropped into the match. XP is earned for what you do in the match with the point value popping up on screen with each kill and objective completion. Players on foot are not completely vulnerable to mechs as they are each armed with an 'anti-titan' heavy weapon such as a rocket launcher.

Players, known in-game as pilots, are equipped with a jump kit device when on foot that grants them ability to wall run and double jump. Players will also have better survivability than in similar games like Call of Duty to ease the of frustration of dying constantly when first getting to grips with the game. To counter this, multiplayer games will be populated with AI opponents so that most players are still able to achieve a steady rate of kills.



The training mode walks the player through a series of basic tests to become familiar with basic first-person shooter mechanics as well as mechanics unique to Titanfall such as wallrunning, double jumping, and operating a Titan.

Campaign Multiplayer

The campaign multiplayer consists of a series of nine missions (standard multiplayer with specific preset game type and map) which can be played from either the side of the IMC or the Militia, with each side offering its own unique storyline delivered through extended intro/outro sequences and additional radio chatter during the match. Regardless of whether the player wins or loses, the campaign progresses to the next mission. Completing the campaign unlocks new Titan chassis options for custom Titan loadouts.

Classic Multiplayer

Classic multiplayer is a standard playlist based online multiplayer mode. Available playlist options are based around a specific match type or a variety of match types.

Match Types

At launch, Titanfall has five basic match types.

  • Attrition - A traditional team deathmatch where kills score points. Kills against minions count (one point), but more points are awarded for killing pilots (four points) or titans (five points).
  • Last Titan Standing - A round based mode with no respawns where each player starts in a titan and the team team that eliminates all of the opposing titans wins the round.
  • Hardpoint - A control point / king of the hill based mode where points are awarded for capturing and defending three hardpoints on the map.
  • Capture The Flag - A traditional capture the flag mode.
  • Pilot Hunter - Similar to attrition, but points are only awarded for pilot kills.


The pre-release open beta for Titanfall offered two maps, Fracture and Angel City. The full title at launch shipped with a total of 15 maps:

The game's reveal has been well received by the video game industry. It has been considered one of the highlights of E3 2013 and PAX Prime 2013. At E3 2013's Game Critics Awards, Titanfall received six awards, including the "Best of Show" award.

It has also drawn comparisons to other first-person shooters such as Call of Duty and Killzone as well as third-person shooters such as Vanquish and Gunslinger Stratos, in addition to manga/anime/game franchises such as Attack on Titan and Gundam.
