    well i noticed that (at least with custom soundtrack) that at certain spots the game will alter the music.
    like when you are in the air the music seems more digitized and in the tunnel you get that in a tunnel feel.

    Yea when you get airborne it cuts off the bass end of the music for a while I believe.  There's lots of little effects like that going on.

    Just a note, WipEout XL / 2097 added a reverb effect to audio CD playback when in tunnels as well.

    Yeah you get reverb when in a tunnel and some phase/flange when you're in the air. It's really nicely done.
