Formed in 1980 by film veteran Charles Band, Wizard Video Entertainment found it's niche in bringing violent horror films like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and I Spit On Your Grave to VHS, typically with eye-poppingly detailed box art. In 1983, the company decided to form a games division dedicated to bringing adaptions of its film product to consoles.
However, since these games were adaptions of violent adults-only horror films and videogames were largely considered a kid's toy at the time, many retailers either refused to stock the games outright or kept them behind the counter, only accessible by request. This, combined with poor distribution efforts, led to the games selling extremely poorly. As a result, Wizard cancelled their planned Atari 2600 adaptation of Flesh Gordon before pulling out of the games industry.
Their games are highly sought after today by 2600 game collectors and horror buffs due to their rarity, and finding complete-with-box copies can be extremely difficult.
