Wonder Boy

Wonder Boy is a series of platformers from developer Westone that has something of a convoluted history, due to many odd naming conventions between the different regions and consoles that featured the games. It also spawned both the Monster World and Adventure Island series.

Concepts

2D

Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
Abilitease

Abilitease is an aspect of game design wherein a game will provide a glimpse of your full skill-set at or near the start, only to remove most of these skills, stats, and abilities soon after.
Achievements

Achievements are extra challenges added into video games that sometimes carry a point value or unlock bonus material, and are sometimes solely for bragging rights.
Antlions

Antlions are predatory larvae that design "sand pit traps" in order to capture prey.
Aurora

An atmospheric phenomenon that causes a fantastic natural light display.
Backtracking

Backtracking is the act of navigating through previously explored areas, usually for the purpose of progressing in an objective-based adventure game. Players who are lost may also backtrack to reorient themselves.
Barbarians

Barbarians in games are often known for their brute strength, large size compared to normal humans, appetite for meat and ale, general crudeness, and prowess in melee combat.
Bats

Bats are small flying mammals. They may frequent caves or haunted houses.
Boss Fight

A boss fight is a culminating challenge that pits the player against one or more enemies representing a greater threat and/or difficulty than those previously faced. These scenarios typically feature unique antagonists.
Boss Pattern

A distinct and predictable pattern of attacks or movement a boss takes. This can be based in reaction to a player's actions or simply a stringent script the boss adheres to.
Bosses

Video game bosses are usually the main antagonist, and arch nemesis of the main protagonist. In most cases the end of a game is when the main character defeats the final boss.
Breath Attack

Some creatures don't need guns or swords to hurt you. Instead they pack a punch with some kind of deadly breath attack, be it flaming, poisonous, radioactive, or just plain bad!
Caveman

Someone who lives in a cave.
Crab

Crabs in all forms and sizes, not just the giant enemy variety.
Credits Menu Option

Why wait until you've beaten the game to find out who made it? These games let you see the credits without ever having to play the game.
Critical Hit

An attack that does more damage than usual, usually affected by random chance and some sort of modifier.
Crouching

Crouching is an essential part of many shooters and plastformers, and can be useful to stay under cover and avoiding incoming projectiles
Currency

Currency has all forms in video games. It is used to buy characters, vehicles, weapons, and more.
Cyclops

A cyclops is any race of creature that is born with only one eye (having two eyes and poking one out doesn't count). Are they short sighted or all knowing?
Death

The main line of distinction between victory or failure in video games, death is the process of a biological being ceasing to be alive.
Digital Distribution

Digital Distribution is the concept of purchasing digital media via the internet and having it sent to the user directly via the internet. No physical representation of this content is given but the content resides on the users hard drive and is legally owned by them.
Direct Continuation

Games where the first level or scene is a re-hash of the final level or scene of the previous game in the series. Usually the difficulty is significantly reduced.
Double Jump

A double jump is the ability to jump while already in mid-air to get some extra lift. It totally violates the fundamental laws of physics, but we try not to think about that.
Dragons

Dragons were originally messengers from heaven, according to early Buddhist texts. In video games, they are mostly adversaries to be overcome, but there are some exceptions.
Dream Library

Original concept for downloading the emulated back catalog from prior systems.
End Credits Songs

When a song is played over the end-credits, usually by a famous artist.
Engrish

Engrish is the usage of improper English spelling or grammar and is most commonly found within older video games as a result of poor English localization. Although most of it comes from East Asian languages, it is not exclusive to that region.
Falling Object

Falling Debris or other stuff you have to evade.
Female Protagonists

This concept is for games where the main playable character is female.
Final Boss

The last boss you face in a game, usually representing the final climax of the game.
