Originally, Wonder Woman was an Amazon warrior champion who won the right to return a special United States intelligence officer back to the "Man's World" and fight off the Nazis. Later comics had her fused with Greek Mythology claiming that she was blessed by different Greek deities and that she was destined to become more beautiful than Aphrodite, wise as Athena, Stronger than Hercules, and swifter than Mercury. In the 1960's, her character gives up her powers to stay in the "Man's World" and she instead learns how to use weapons and martial arts and goes on missions involving everything from espionage to mythology. Today her Amazon roots in her origins more or less remains the same.

Wonder Woman is Princess Diana, a member of a fictional tribe of Amazons that live on Themyscira. She has super-strength, the power of flight, an invisible jet, gauntlets that deflect bullets and a lasso that compels the wearer to tell the truth. She has also been known to use swords/shield/armor.
