Now if they'd just let me change into one of the dudes from The Lost Vikings...
Blizzard has issued some early word on an upcoming customer service feature for World of Warcraft. The company is developing a service that, like the realm transfer system that lets players move their characters from one server to another, will allow players to flip their Alliance characters over to Horde, or vice versa.

The news comes from a post to the Blizzard boards that, like anything involving change, touched off an avalanche of comments from people who make like this is going to be the end of the world. Actually, it's a bit more even than the average announcement, as there are plenty of people piping up in there with "cool" and "wow!" messages, expressing a touch of excitement for the upcoming feature.

It's primarily going in to allow players who leveled up characters on the opposite side as their friends to swap over and join up with their posse. But there aren't really any more details about it out there, so we'll have to wait and see what sort of restrictions are applied and how, exactly, it'll all work.

I suspect Mountain Dew will be involved.

This sounds great!

#4 Posted by munmon (11 posts) -

They do that, I will quit WoW

#5 Posted by Avarix (46 posts) -

Cool, I might subscribe again.

Would doing that force a server transfer as well?  I haven't played in a while but can't you not have characters of both factions in the same realm?

#7 Posted by zityz (2360 posts) -

This might sound intriging if they let me change into The Eradicator from The Death and Return of Superman. Then i MIGHT consider playing the game...maybe...probably not but it would still be cool.

So obviously you'd have to change races, right? If that's the case, I don't see how this could be a big problem. It doesn't hurt anybody, and allows people who legitimately made the wrong choice an option of switching over. Of course, Blizzard gets to reap even more profit, and become a bloated gassbag of money.

I can't wait to get some Gamer Fuel

BEARDS TO YOUR FACE!

Great idea. No problems here.

#12 Posted by JJOR64 (18784 posts) -

That sounds crazy.  WoW just keeps getting better and better.

#13 Posted by Floppypants (798 posts) -

This is long overdue in my opinion.  This change is going to let a lot of people, including myself, play with real life friends without rerolling.

#14 Posted by Vinchenzo (6192 posts) -

Stupid idea. I miss the days when selecting a realm, a name, and a character were all serious decisions. Way to fuck WoW up, Blizzard. I'd seriously consider hating you if you weren't making Diablo III and Starcraft II.

On PvP servers you can't.  On PvE servers you can have any combination of Horde and Alliance characters.

Emotional responses aside I think this is a good feature addition for WoW players. If a realm is lopsided they could add incentives (or not charge money) to tranfer to the minority faction. This is a good thing.

I still won't ever play another MMO again, Blizz can dangle that carrot on a stick somewhere else. 'Nuff said.

This is actually pretty crazy. I assume this will involve a race change as well (obviously) so could this possibly mean race changes with your current faction.

I've been trying to quit WoW on and off for years.  I just started playing again, and now this...

When will it end?  Blizzard is a thief of my $15.

This would have been awesome like 5 months ago when i still played :(

#21 Posted by Svestus (24 posts) -

Hell yeah! ....oh, I was excited that somebody mentioned Lost Vikings.

#22 Posted by Bwast (1334 posts) -

This is an absolutely terrible idea.

#23 Posted by TooWalrus (12977 posts) -

I honestly don't know how I feel about this. I've always wished that I'd chose horde from the beginning but... Man, so many friends will be lost if I switch... Thanks for the fucking ultimatum, Blizzard.

#24 Posted by Kajaah117 (1070 posts) -

How would this even work? A race change would obviously be required, whatever. It sounds cool, but I'm skeptical until I see it in action.

#25 Posted by MaddProdigy (1041 posts) -

Not gonna use it but i was just thinking that they need to implement this, awsome

#26 Posted by JoelTGM (5592 posts) -

They are gonna make tons of money from that!

Would have been nice when I was playing, I loved the horde side but most friends were playing alliance, while the human race benefit with factions helped out a lot I would have dropped it all to get my main warlock & rogue to flip to horde side instantly.

Now if I want bigger shoulders I can just go Tauren.

i started to play wow again this week. I feel so dirty

#31 Posted by echo13791 (60 posts) -

This is quite exciting! I'll combo this with a server transfer and I can play with some friends

Nice to see a MMORPG company actually act on those exit polls when you cancel your account.. I know a big one for a lot of WoW players is they don't want to level up a dood on the other side that their friends play on, so they just quit.

More value added services please. Blizzard. There's people who have the money to pay for them and want to.

I know I will be switching over my abandoned horde mage.

I'm with Vinchenzo on this one.

As an old WoW player who played from release for two years before finally stopping, this is the complete opposite of what it was like then. This is essentially a race change which they said they would never do. While I can sadly see why they have gone back on numerous things they have said (its gotten so big they've had too. their player base isn't what they probably thought it was going to be from the start) I still don't like it.
#34 Posted by Seedofpower (3909 posts) -

hahaha man, they are sqeezing every penny out of this game as they can. Soon they will see their own gold and items for real money.

#35 Posted by Yummylee (20582 posts) -

Their taking too much uniquety away from the game, bad enough that the exclusive class' had to be made available for both factions..but then again why am i even giving the slightest bit of care which could be better used on my lack of pepsi max atm?...well i do love to moan xD

You forget that it's a video game and that the word "srs" should be no where near it.
#37 Posted by Killphuqdie (23 posts) -

I really like the sound of this, when I used to play I chose alliance for a few friends who had quit by the time I was 70 and bit by bit I started to hate the alliance and it ruined the game for me. Until I got my belf rogue

#38 Posted by DeadMonkeys (818 posts) -

Awesome, but I'm probably not going to use it.

liar!!
#40 Posted by Crash_Happy (637 posts) -

I've never wanted to play WoW, so as an outsider I have to wonder. Why are players apparently assuming, and even willing, to pay money for this? There seems to be a few games out there that have exactly this not only for free but actually made part of the game.

#41 Posted by animateria (3252 posts) -

Eh, why play alliance at all?

FOR THE HORDE! Bitches!

#42 Edited by C2C (831 posts) -

While quite the novel addition, this still won't make me go back to WoW.  They already leeched enough money off of me as it is.

#43 Posted by angryphil (82 posts) -

mehh i really do not like wow, thinking about playing makes me sick ><

#44 Posted by NathHaw (2748 posts) -

I heard about it tonight in game.  I was excited, cuz now I can bring that neglected pally over to the Horde.  ...if it's all it's cracked up to be.

#45 Posted by Death_Burnout (3768 posts) -

yup, i think i hate WoW even more now, too much trivialization.

#46 Posted by demonbear (1860 posts) -

@Jeff Technically, the lost vikings ARE in wow. They're in Uldaman. See :

#47 Posted by Vorbis (2748 posts) -

WoW has strayed so far from its original path I dont think this is such a big problem, this is nothing compared to the sex changes.

I second this emotion.

wonder if you just get to change your character to a horde/alliance race, or if your actual dude is completely intact but now on the other side.  Interesting.
