On the main GB page when it said "Learn about the end of the world... of Warcraft" it got me thinking, what would happen if for no reason Blizzard just shutdown all WoW servers forever? There's like 12 million people stuck in Azeroth right now... many with literally thousands of hours put into their characters... that would be a frightening time lol
World of Warcraft
Game » consists of 9 releases. Released Nov 23, 2004
World of Warcraft is an MMORPG that takes place in Blizzard Entertainment's Warcraft universe. At its peak, it boasted a player base of over 12.5 million subscribers, making it the most popular MMO of all time.
What would happen if they permanently shut down WoW?
Civilization as we know it would come to an end. It could be the setting for a new post apocalyptic game.
Blizzard would go back to spending quality time on Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3, and there would be about 12,000,000 suicides.
Anyway, I'd totally be for it.
If they got WoW 2 out there and then the WoW apocalypse occured (along with a KILLER cinematic)... man that'd be badass
@natetodamax:
Way to be the third person to say that.
There are some people I know (personally) who would cry a river, but for the most part, people would just say "Meh, whatever," and move on.
The definition of a stereotype is something that isn't true about everybody in the group that people believe something about. Sure, some WoW players are crazy addicted. Most aren't.
Trust me. I play WoW. I ain't going to kill myself. I'd shrug it off for fucks sake.
The reign of an evil empire would finally be over, and people around the world would celebrate. Just like this
" People would move on. Seriously, all this stereotyping of WoW gamers is annoying as fuck. Just let it go. "But all society's perceptions of individuals are based on stereotypes. Why do you think that the news media labels all gamers as either children or 30 year old men living in their parent's basements? Because it's easy and requires no thinking, even if it has nothing to do with the truth.
Honestly, I'd chuckle. People do get too into their MMOs, and it'd be like putting a junkie in rehab, and making him go cold turkey. Also, people may actually get laid.
The best thing that could happen is for WoW to shut down. WoW is directly responsible for the stagnation of the MMO market. Even the best contenders out there know that no matter how fantastic they could make their game, it will never have WoW numbers and most seem to shut down or dwindle down to nearly nothing within a year or two.
WoW's success doesn't speak toward it's quality or innovation anymore than the number of people who use MySpace or Twitter speaks for its quality. Without WoW, people may give alternatives a shot and discover true MMOs and RPGs and developers would have incentive to capture that new audience (that right now won't look at ANYTHING you have to offer, unless it's WoW-related. Period.).
CCP, with EVE-Online, seem to be the only people offering any real innovation both in game-play, openness, scope, and even behind-the-scenes operations. The MMO world should be far beyond where it is today. Look at every new MMO coming out this year and next and you'll find that other than snazzy graphics and a new skin, they are almost identical to WoW back in 2003 and 2004.
" *CRY CRY CRY* PEOPLE ARE MAKING STEREOTYPES ABOUT WOW PLAYERS! Vinchenzo, Breadfan, the rest of you...do you not realize that WoW players THEMSELVES make those same stereotypes? Look, I used to get uptight about the shit, but frankly, it doesn't matter anymore. "I'm going on a eating and drinking binge, it should induce some heavy crying, hope you're happy! Looks like I'm on my way to becoming that average 35 year-old gamer; depressed and is overweight...hooray!! I do the same, so I can't argue with you there.
But....
I'm just preparing the future for a world where we will all be MASSIVELY ONLINE. You stereotype now, just wait till you become the stereotype!
" @Vinchenzo said:Yeah but stereotypes are born from something real. I'm sure there are a few ppl that play WoW and fit into the stereotype that has been built up. There was a guy in china that died from playing too much WoW. Playing a game and not eating or sleeping, that is pretty fucking messed up.People would move on. Seriously, all this stereotyping of WoW gamers is annoying as fuck. Just let it go.Agreed. I don't even play World of Warcraft, but the whole MMO stereotyping fad is becoming a little too cliche "

"I think you hit the nail on the head right there. I love Warhammer Online, but they've had server consolidations, etc happening for a while now because people who came onboard early on went back to WoW after a while. Honestly, I'm glad they left- because you're right, the more people on an MMO, the more asshats you get. Quantity does not equal quality when it comes to players. Hell, watch the first two weeks of American Idol auditions. Tons of people, few with talent.
Children would be born.
