Worms 2: Armageddon Review

I hope you were as excited as I was when you heard that Worms 2: Armageddon was coming to the Xbox Live Arcade. Ever since trying the first Worms, I fell in love with Worms’s crazy strategic action. I had heard of Worms from some friends, but their explanations never served the game any justice as they never piqued my interest. But being a hardcore 360 gamer I figured I would try it since it was coming to my favorite console. No sooner had I played my first game I was hooked and of course I had to get Worms 2.

Worms 2: Armageddon is still what everyone liked about the original with so much more. All the weapons from the first return, but Worms 2 adds 15 weapons to the bunch. It sounds awesome and it’s definitely fun to try them all, but you realize the more weapons the more you have to spend trying to decide which weapons to use.  However you won’t use them often and some are only usable once so you are never too overpowered. The new weapons are more interesting like The Super Sheep that’s a sheep that can fly right into an enemy, a Sentry gun that you can plant that’ll shoot any worms that get too close or the Buffalo of Lies that keeps blowing up as it hits a wall up to 6 times.

But that’s not all! Worms 2 has many more speech banks that are much more creative. You can have your worms speak different languages, or sound like your favorite stereotypical voices like Soul Man (aka James Brown), Snitch (aka Italian mobster), or Thespian (like a Roman general). Other ways to customize your worms include hats like Russian fur hats, sombreros, and space helmets. You can even have them do a victory dance when they get a kill.

Another interesting feature is the ability to create your own custom gametypes from pre-existing gametypes. Team 17 even added some of their own. Fort is a gametype that pits two teams against each other firing from their own fort on each side of the screen. Another gametype is Race in which you use a ninja rope to traverse a custom map to the teleport destination at the end.

Although it might take a few tries to get into a game of worms, once you are in, unless the host’s connection is horrible, you’ll easily have a good time. Fighting human opponents still holds the same hilarity as the computer, but with much more strategy involved. Ranked games include your Standard Worms deathmatch, Fort, Crazy Crates, and Pro. Crazy Crates starts both teams on a tall landscape and all weapons crates fall from the sky and sprinkle the top each turn. Pro is a game of bare essentials of Worms on a tall landscape with a 30 second time limit per turn.

Well there you have it. If you like what Worms is all about, then you’ll love this one. Even those who aren’t big strategy game enthusiasts will find something fun in this game. It’s only 10 bucks, even cheaper than the first Worms. If you’re looking for a quick fun game, then see if Worms 2: Armageddon tickles your fancy.
