The X-Men are a superhero team in the Marvel Comics Universe created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby in 1963.

Professor Charles Xavier (Professor X) created a safe haven at his Westchester mansion to train young mutants to use their powers for the good of all mankind.  Xavier originally recruited Angel, Beast, Cyclops, Iceman and Jean Grey dubbing them the "X-Men" due to their possession of the "X-Gene", a gene which gives mutants their abilities.  The X-Men started off with just five members and as the years passed many new characters have joined the team while just as many have left.
