Deathsmiles IIX to Mark First Non-Localized Release on Xbox Live

As the market and appetite for downloadable content continues to expand, we're starting to see more and more companies experiment. An exciting development for gamers is non-localized content. It costs money to localize even the smallest of games, a price tag that prevents a great many from ever arriving.

Sony recently partnered with MonkeyPaw Games for a series of non-localized (read: no English, all Japanese) releases through PlayStation Network, and Microsoft joins them on Tuesday with Cave's Deathsmiles IIX. Like most Cave games, Deathsmiles IIX is all about dodging streams of bullets, and gamers will have a chance to pick up the game in its original form for $29.99 via Games on Demand.

According to Cave's official Facebook page, the studio's Xbox 360 producer, Makoto Asada, was "approached by Microsoft with the opportunity, and we will be giving this format a try for getting some of our Japan-only shooters released overseas." Makes it sound like Deathsmiles IIX won't be alone.

Right now, Deathsmiles IIX is only going to be available in North America, though a representative on Cave's Facebook page noted that could change, depending on the response here and demand abroad.

Link is busted on the front page.

I'm pretty used to games in all-Japanese, so I'm happy to see a more convenient way of getting a hold of these more niche titles. Somehow having them untranslated feels like the crazy is more pure and uncut.

@Rayeth: I think there is.  There's still a really dedicated shmup community that would be more than willing to drop the cash for this.  It does nothing to expand the audience, of course, but they're not trying to, as evidenced by the price tag.

I think so. Cave could put out all the Bullethell shooters they want and people would still buy them. Most bullethell shooters I see have a 4 to 5 rating on XBL while other random games usually maintain a 3 or so.

But yeah personally I don't see the appeal of them either. A lot of the hard work seems like them just having to create sprites. I kind of doubt much work goes into bullet pattern besides like oh you can get through here since your characters hitbox is only a pixel. Everything else on the screen will be bullets and we'll even put in slowdown to make the game seem more crazay. But eh dunno.

Trust me, it takes skill to design a good bullet hell game. If it was as easy as throwing a bunch of bullets on there and calling it a day, games like King of Fighters: Sky Stage, Otomedius and all those indie shoot 'em ups would be in about the same league as Cave's games... but they're not. By any possible stretch of the imagination.

Pattern designs, slowdown, pacing, balancing, not to mention the elaborate scoring systems -- there's a reason that Cave have maintained a dedicated fanbase while almost all the others have fallen, and it's not that they just slap a bunch of bullets on the screen. They make challenging, well-paced, balanced, often quite complex games that can be played and replayed for years.

Loved Deathsmiles.  One of the most (if not the most) well balanced shmups this console generation.  Always intense, but never really cheap.  The game's only a half hour long, but I still put more time into replaying that half hour again and again then I have with most "full length" games.  Especially with the various modes you can play.

I don't know if I want this yet, though.  I haven't been following the news on it too much, so I don't know if "original" means the arcade version, or if it means a japanese Xbox version with upgraded graphics and black label mode.  (If the console ports even had that added this time.)  If it's got the extras, then must have.  If not, must think.

This is a port of the second Deathsmiles game, Deathsmiles II. The X isn't a numeral. It stands for "Xbox 360" or "X Mode" (a mode exclusive to this console version), or perhaps "Xtra" or "Xtreme".

Or maybe all of them, I guess?

If they're not going to spend money on localization or printing discs and shipping them to retail, there probably doesn't need to be a huge market for it. There are people who go out of their way to import these games, so there is a market, small though it may be.

Yo son, I know my numerals. But why wouldn't they do what Final Fantasy did with X-2 or XIII-2? It creates a divider that's a little easier to read at first glance, maybe Deathsmiles II: X. That seems to make more sense. Instead they just come off as being ignorant.

Couldn't they just... you know... get rid of the region locking and let people purchase games off of the Japanese store to play on their North American consoles? Perhaps even just have one big global store with tags that say "English Game" or "Japanese Game"?

I don't understand why they have to experiment by releasing one Japanese-language game to "test the waters", when removing region locking wouldn't exactly cost them any money. Are there some sort of crazy legal hoops they'd have to jump through involving the different ratings boards?

Why is this being done now rather than before? I am glad something like this is going on but can we get past region locks. Look devs want to make money and we want to play there games. So why cant we buy jap games to play. The fact that most Americans that watch anime prefer Jap with english subtitles.

What everyone seems to not understand is they do just release these types of games in Japan without region locking but they're $80-$90 and take weeks to arrive. I'd much rather pay $30 and get it in an hour on my couch.

Keep em coming. If you don't like these types of games, don't buy them and don't comment on news stories about them.

dumb, i dont care if they dont localise it but release it as an XBLA title for 800 points, if they dont want to pay the money why should I?

Because it's a boxed, full-price retail game in Japan and you're getting it for less than budget price.
its a less than budget price game, hardly surprising that these Niche games would sell for that kind of price but i would still expect the localisation if its being charged at a retail price.

what makes this game worth so much more than Trouble witches Neo, Ikaruga and Trigger heart Excelsia? As i recall the previous Deathsmiles got localised and managed 100,000 copies but suffered from horrible slowdown.

Since they are not localizing and only releasing digitally I'm baffled that they aren't putting this out in Europe as well.

    It carries literally no risk.

It's possible that we could be looking at another Arcana Heart 3 situation (i.e. they might have a European publisher [ Rising Star in this case, most likely, and Arc Syst... err Zen United for AH3] ready for a retail release, and America gets a cheap digital distribution-only deal).

The menus are already in English and the story barely even exists. All you're missing out on is a couple of lines of dialogue. You expect them to sell a game that's recently been released in another region on a disc, in a box, for full price for ten measly bucks because of a couple of untranslated lines that are as good as completely irrelevant to the player's experience?

Ikaruga is a decade old. Games that old are always re-released really cheap, because... well, they're old. It's the same reason you can get masterpieces like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Super Mario World for dirt cheap via Virtual Console.

As for Trouble Witches Neo! and Triggerheart Excelica, they're worth less because they were made by amateurs, while Deathsmiles II was made by a team that includes people with decades of experience developing top-notch games in the genre. Comparing them is like comparing Greed Corp to Civilization V. They're simply not in the same league.

It suffered from a horrible lack of slowdown, actually. A lot of the original slowdown had been removed in order to avoid stupid complaints like from Americans who don't know anything about bullet hell shoot 'em ups -- a mistake Cave will never redo after the backlash from fans who did know their shit.
