So after going through some of Sine Mora, I'm into the whole shmuppy thing. I'm curious if anyone has a few recommendations for other good ones on the 360

Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun by Treasure, both through XBLA.

I'd recommend Espgaluda II Black Label, Mushihime-sama Futari Ver 1.5, Dodonpachi Resurrection with the Black Label DLC, Muchi Muchi Pork! & Pink Sweets, Deathsmiles, Ikaruga and Omega Five in that order.

I never did like playing games whose names I didn't know how to properly pronounce.

I've got the opposite affliction, but there seems to be a good collection of games here

@ptc: I saw some of shoot 1up on youtubes, it looks pretty sweet so I might have to look into that

EDIT: Also, rather than make a different thread or whatever, would an arcade still be a 'neat' idea to play these games to the fullest extent?

Trouble Witches Neo is also another good game, also check out Raiden Fighters Aces on Games on Demand. It's three games rolled in to one essentially.

There's a free one called Aegis Wing that you could try.  It has multiplayer functionality in which you can combine your ships together and stuff.  I really suck at it, but hey, it's free!

Really? I take Mushihime-sama over espgaluda.

Most of those seem to only be out in Japan. how is he supposed to get them? I have played Deathsmiles and it's pretty good from what I can tell.

    They are region free.

Most Japanese shmups on the 360 are region free since they know they'll never localize them. They're importable, just insanely expensive.

Raiden IV made it over here though, for some reason. Anyway I say Dodonpachi, since that's my favorite shmup series at the moment.

If you wanna get the most out of it you may want to pick up an NTSC-J console.

Er, I guess not, didn't think that that the majority of them would be region free.

I'll toss out a recommendation for Triggerheart Exelica. It is on XBLA.

Deathsmiles is excessively short considering most of it is just replaying the same small set of levels on all the different modes without much different to them. Definitely rent it first or grab it cheap as it's not that great from the time I spent playing it.

@MikkaQ: I noticed that I could get a few from a site where they were like 40 bucks each, but considering there're two Dodonpachi recommendations I think I might snag that one first.

@fox01313: Yeah, I have to say I've watched the quick look a couple of times and it leaves me kind of on the fence, which in my opinion, is not a good thing. Might still rent it if I can find it...

To the rest of the folks: Thanks for the suggestions! I'm compiling a list and gonna go through demos and trials here and there

@EarlessShrimp: Yeah looking back at the dates on the achievements it took a few hours to get about 1/2 the points in the game in an afternoon, could have worked better as a XBLA game because as a full priced game it's just a lousy buy for the amount of time spent on playing it.

Metal Slug 3 is pretty good on the 360, though I don't think it's the best version of it.

It's an arcade shoot 'em up. Standard length in the genre is somewhere between 20 and 40 minutes with 5-7 stages, and playing the games over and over while striving for a one-credit clear and a high score is the whole point.

Free trial, and it's only a $1 if you want to buy.  I really enjoyed my run-through of that one.  Not super challenging, but challenging enough to be fun.

MMP&PS is incredibly fun. I'd put that at the top of my Shmup list.

Don't forget Deathsmiles IIX is on Games on Demand if you dont mind the Japanese menus. Also Akai Katana is apparently dropping soon although not sure if that one is good or not.
