Does the Xbox 360 Dashboard Still Support the HD-DVD Player

#1 Posted by I_Stay_Puft (1040 posts) - 10 months, 1 day ago

Hey folks,

So the other day I was going through storage and I found my old Xbox 360 HD-DVD player along with a bunch of movies I had purchased on sale after the discontinuation of it. I hooked it up to my slim 360 with the new dashboard interface expecting to just hook it up and start watching some stuff off of it. Problem is I spent a few minutes and realized like most people, I can hardly find anything let alone the HD-DVD button on the new dashboard. Does anybody know where the HD-DVD player option is or if it will still work on the new 360 dashboard? Any info would be much appreciated.

That is a good fucking question.

I cannot help you, but I'm curious to know the answer.

I don't have a slim.. but my HD-DVD player still works on my old school 360.. go to your video tab and it shows up there

Works on the slim as well as the old-school model

It better, that thing is the future of movies!

What Hotcakesman said, you go to the Video tab and it'll be in the same place menu as ZUNE VIDEO / XBOX VIDEO / USB DEVICE / MEDIA CENTER. There will be an extra menu that says HD DVD. They removed the option to play HD DVDs from the Home tab when the NXE came out.

I'm totally gonna try this with the slim tomorrow. The possibilities are endless! I can watch The Bourne Identity, or Superman Returns. I could even watch American Gangster. In HD, people. And that's only possible with the magic of HD-DVD.

Still works, I plugged it in for shits and giggles recently.

Yup it still works. Still see people on my friends list using it.

Is this true now? Just heard Patrick on the bombcast say that now HD DVD player doesn't work. This was a top hit in my search for an answer.

I just plugged mine in to find out and yes it works. Back to the closet it goes.

I still hate that Blu-Ray is the survivor.

@JasonR86: No, because it's not in any way a pun.

I love this.

Haha, HD DVD. Are games even printed on these? Is that why certain games are on multiple discs?

"Clearly" as in 'crystal clear' as in 'high definition' as in 'really clear picture' as in 'HD'.

...there's a pun there I swear!

It still works, but it's hiding under My Apps. I don't think it constitutes an app if I can unplug the thing and throw it at people.

The way streaming and digital download services are going, Blu-Ray may be on its last leg for physical media.

- BTW I did eventually find where it was located after bout an hour of looking and eventually had a Martin Scorsese marathon with Goodfellas and Casino. But like what most people said, after finding out the HD-DVD player works its back in storage.

See, HD-DVDs aren't "Blu," sooooo boom. There it is.

That thing will become like the Laserdisc in another ten years.

@phrosen: Oh, thank god. I just got to that discussion in the bombcast while driving to work today and I about shit my pants. I have about 50 or 60 HD DVDs (for which I paid like $75, granted) and was hoping I wouldn't have to hack it onto my PC.

You made me chuckle so it's all worth it.

I just tried to play my Hd DVD player and had the same issue. After an hour or so, I finally got it working. You have to go into settings, and enable 'auto play'. then insert your disk into the drive and it will start automatically. After that you can then turn auto play off again if you wish. Now when you go to the video/movie blade, you go into 'my video apps' and there will be a app that says 'HD-DVD" and thats how you play it from now on. This is the only way to get the app to show up.

I -still- have my HD-DVD player next to my Xbox. I don't think it's hooked up though.

A wonderfully dumb format that's perfect for confusing young folk with?

No, people actually bought laserdisc players.

I actually saw some of these things for sale at EB Games about a month ago, and the crazy fucking thing is it wasn't a used one. It was a brand new box sitting way up high with all the other new fancy crap like arcade sticks and super giant statue editions of games. It's probably been in their stock room for 6 years haha

Bingo.

You mean it's even more exclusive-clusive-clusive?

16.8 million laser disc players sold worldwide.

316,000 Xbox 360 HD DVD players sold worldwide.

YOU DECIDE.
