I'm in the NXE Beta program & my latest update added the Games On Demand service.
I've explored pricing & I've come to the conclusion that Microsoft hates us.....
It's $30.00 for Bioshock & Oblivion, do you realize you can get them BOTH in a bundle at GameStop for $30?
& Mass Effect is $20, but you could go buy the GotY Edition & get the DLC for FREE + bonus content.
+ WHY THE HELL is CoD 2 $20??? That should be like $10 along with Kameo or something......
Where is the incentive to want to purchase any of this shit?

EDIT: Prices are inconsistant, thus prooving less of a bargain worldwide

Convenience. But yeah, those prices kind of suck. Oh well. I am still packing a 20GB (But really more like 13GB) hard drive and so therefore have no room to download any of those anyways.

Well if you ever contemplate upgrading I hear that Microsoft is going to announce a bigger HDD soon, unconfirmed, but very VERY plausible so I would wait. Just as a friend to friend commentary, lol.
P.S. Convenience my ballsack! It's only convenient if you're fat or retarded. I would rather go out & buy wiid with that extra cash, lmao!!!

While I don't agree that the pricing is worth it to some, foreigners may find it to be a godsend for games that they want to get on the cheapz.

Meanwhile, you have to realize that there are some gamers who would like to cut down on the amount of time they are running their CD drive.  With Games on Demand, they can keep the system running cool while playing a back catalog game and...surprise surprise...they don't have to worry about changing out a disc to play a different game.  There IS a lot of convenience in being able to DL my game to my HDD, and if you don't see that, well...then the service isn't for you, so move along.

Or you could just get the game at a more affordable price & rip it to your HDD because it would take up the same amount of space as purchasing it overpriced from Games on Demand & would give you the same "convenience" & keep your console equally as cool.

even so... in europe they aren't specially heavy... comparing to the pricing in the stores.

I hope it will lower the prices of the games in the actual stores.

Assassin's Creed matches MSRP, others are needlessly $10-20 more. But that's how the cookie crumbles, I guess.

Mass Effect for $99? WTF?! That's...that's insane. It wasn't even that much at retail launch, you can find it for like $30 these days! Fuck that.

The way I am looking at it is the games on offer are in the greatest hits range in the UK so if you were looking to get say COD2 or Oblivion then it would be easier to go a shop and pick up those games from there. Also if you are very very lucky you could get them cheaper as well.

A superior version of Bioshock has been available for £3.50 on Steam.  PC version of Mass Effect can currently be bought and hand delivered to your door for £7.49.

There is some convenience, yes, but just as much for them as there is for the consumer - no retailer cut, no physical delivery, no box + manual etc.

Let's hope we never end up in a situation where digital distribution via console is our only choice.  They're already proving they can't be trusted with it.  The competition between the physical retailers and online mail order sites is the only thing keeping DD pricing remotely in check.  If content ends up exclusively available on the console DD service then we will get so screwed.

Speak with your wallet. Its not rocket science, of course they're going to see if you're stupid enough to pay this much before bringing the prices down to something realistic. I can't blame them, based on some online encounters.

Right, but I've gotta switch discs.

Nonetheless, you've updated the pricing for it all...and I'm calling bullshit as well.  I'd rather switch discs for the ripped copies than pay assloads for games that have already been out for a long while.

The list is a bit wrong. In/from Sweden I can buy 500MS-points from Microsoft for 56,50sek; which means 349sek buys 3088 MS-points (but easier to just type 3000 since you buy in 500- increments). Something must be wrong with prices atm.

$40 CAD for Oblivion and Bioshock is a joke. Then again, Microsoft isn't afraid to stiff people. However, I do hope they come to terms and realize the shame of ruining a good thing like digital downloads -- take a page from Steam's book and give reasonable prices.

Quit your whinging. Did you really think MS was gonna match online prices for these games? They were always going to be a bad deal, the same goes for Xbox 1 games.

Yea that is kinda wack. If the middle man is cut out of the equation, as well as the manufacturing of the physical disc, box and instructions, it should be cheeper than in a store.

They try justifying the higher price as "convenience" of having it there and then, as well as bandwidth costs. Both of which cost pennies even for 10GB of Data, should add no more than a couple of dollars, but the savings in manufacturer and retail mark ups etc, should have easily offset the difference. These games should be no more than 1600MSP.

its called paying for overhead and making a PROFIT.
you don't just do something for the same cost it does to do that thing if you do that then you make no profit, and thats why its called buisness.
If people are so hard up for deals then go buy the stuff retail or used.

Hmm, that's messed up. Seems there's still a different standard for console games vs PC games.

ie: The "Convenience charge" should apply to Steam as well, and yet Steam prices are ridiculously low.
The truth is that downloadable games have a larger profit margin because they don't have to print a disc and make boxes, and art, and manuals, and all that.

Valve passes the savings on to you, it seems Microsoft are less charitable. Although, the solution is the same as it ever is. Don't buy it.

I still think having the physical disc/package makes your collection look better. I don't think I could put a game on my HD when I could have it along side my others ya know? Eventually our HDs are going to be over stuffed.

You shouldn't be paying for convenience, you should be saving because of the cheaper production costs. On PSN Burnout Paradise is a lot cheaper than the retail box version (or at least it was).

Well, it has long been accepted, not with games but with any product, that you do indeed, and should, be paying for convenience.

However, you have to consider that it isn't as simple as "It costs less to distribute therefore I should be saving $$$" i'm no defending the prices i'm sure they can do better than this, but you have to remember that (as with retail games) simply putting the game out incurs a fee that is payed to Microsoft (or Sony, Nintendo as appropriatte) for retail that fee is $8 per disc (regardless of the retail price. Which is why those wanting $30 games are fucking stupid, $30 barely breaks even once you factor in all the costs to actually get the game onto a store shelf) . For XBLA it can be up to 50% of the price of the product, plus another fee for hosting, so it's no surprise that these are expensive.

The publisher needs to keep the price high enough that they see enough back to make them happy once MS takes it's share. So if a game is $40 on this system, they may only be seeing around $18 of it. So the numbers are very much similar to retail, the publisher at least, saves almost nothing by distributing through this system (others with less heavy fees however, they do)

However, that said, I do not suppor it, I think MS needs to lower the fees in order to allow publishers to compete with the second hand and retail markets. The reason physical box copies go so cheap after a while is that the average shelf life of a game is around 6 months (less in the current climate) and near to that time warehouses and store shelfs begin to make room for the next game to take its place, so they begin to shift the product regardless of price, very often even at a loss just to get rid of it. So essentially, they are actually giving them away, which publishers cannot hope to compete with.

    Edit:

So yeah, all you whiny people complaining "b.b.b.but I can buys lots of bandwidth CHEAP!!!" you are conveniently forgetting that MS charges a HUGE fee for the privelege of simply releasing a game on their console, as well as a premium fee for the storage seeing as this isn't some shitty backwater website bandwidth we are talking about, it's space on a service that is used by millions of people and is in huge demand. And the publisher has to make a profit on top of that.

This kind of shit doesn't fly. I hope Gamestop and EB games and their kind get even dirtier and filthier with their used games business.

" $40 CAD for Oblivion and Bioshock is a joke. Then again, Microsoft isn't afraid to stiff people. However, I do hope they come to terms and realize the shame of ruining a good thing like digital downloads -- take a page from Steam's book and give reasonable prices. "
Yeah right, Steams prices are awesome in Europe.
For example F.E.A.R. 2 costs 50 euro on steam. You can buy it for 25 euro.
Steam COD4 is 50 euro. You can buy it for 25 euro!
Is that reasonable? Oh, and there's some games that we can't even buy.

its called paying for overhead and making a PROFIT. you don't just do something for the same cost it does to do that thing if you do that then you make no profit, and thats why its called buisness.  If people are so hard up for deals then go buy the stuff retail or used. "
Oh Willy my neo-con Microsoft supporting friend. These games are old, they've had their lifespan, these re-issues are much like a "Greatest Hits" collection. They could easily sell these games at $20 1600MSP, and make a decent return. Only cost would be bandwith issues, which are pennies, and mostly covered by Xbox Live Gold Subscription. By having it so cheap you're also cutting down on the used game industry, a double benefit to the companies and corporate profits.

Yeah, the prices (I'm in Finland, €uro zone) are a total bummer, just noticed them today. I can get all of the available games cheaper on retail.

My brand spanking new copy of Mass Effect arrived in the post last week. Paid £10.79/$18 inc postage from HMV.

You're telling me that for £10 more I could have the game take up lots of disc space and be tied to my console? What was I thinking.

Not to mention that if somebody downloads a game they can't turn around and sell it later on. The used game market eats up profits (well I guess it would technically be 'potential profits') more than anything else. I'm not saying they should not make a profit, but the cheaper they can make the digital copy, the more incentive there is for people to buy that instead of a hard copy that could be sold in a way that gives the company zero profit from the sale.

I'm more than happy to wait what? A day, or so to pick up a game than download it for a stupid price.
