On topic though, I guess Fable 3 was pretty disappointing.

    Crysis 2

I still regard the first two thirds of the original as my favorite shooter of all time. Crysis 2 just felt like a major step backwards, and is probably the best example of the consolification of PC games (not that consolification is inherently bad).

For me it's mostly sequels to games I liked that either didn't live up to their potential or strayed from the spirit of the original.

Resistance 2 and Dead Space 2 are the two that immediately come to mind.

Well, I think they should've tried something in a completely different genre. Don't get me wrong, I love the first two Rogue Squadron games. But it seems like they were running low on good game design ideas for an aerial combat game, given that they filled half of the final Rogue Squadron game with pointless on-foot missions that were complete garbage. But oh no, they went ahead and proved me wrong by making Lair, the greatest aerial combat game ever made.

Oh wait, no, Lair got an even more negative response than Rogue Squadron 3: Rebel Strike did.

Fable III, fer sure. Also, while not really a flat out disappointment, I don't think I enjoyed Dead Space 2 as much as I did its predecessor. In my mind, the first game was a tighter, more visceral experience.

@BisonHero: Yeah, those on foot missions weren't great, and even the regular stuff wasn't as good (despite the technical improvements and more enemies, etc).

My biggest complaint with Lair was how buggy it was. When it was running well it wasn't bad, and it looked great but, man, so many bugs, and the controls, and man. MAN.

Yeah. I dunno. I feel bad for those guys. Wherever they are now.

Also, the thing I disliked most about Rebel Strike was that they didn't get the guy who played Wedge in the movies to voice Wedge like he did in Rogue Leader. Even in the RL co-op levels. They re-recorded the lines.

MadWorld. Everything about the game is ridiculous in its excess, except for the actual game part. Once you finish the first zone, you've literally seen everything the game has to offer. The game looks really cool and all, and it stays inventive with the different hazards to kill guys with, but the game still feels really light on things for the player to do. You never get new abilities, so the gameplay gets stale incredibly fast, and it's not very complex to begin with. The enemies have the same attacks in every level, they just get reskinned, so that becomes boring immediately. And there's only like 3 improvised weapons that are just reskinned over and over but have the same function. The minibosses and bosses were cool, I guess. The game had kinda jarring shifts in tone, since the gameplay is absurd, with juvenile commentary at all times, and then the story cutscenes between zones are suddenly an incredibly serious The Running Man rip-off.

Puzzle Quest 2. You have no idea how much I love Puzzle Quest 1. It's where I got all my mad Bejeweled skillz, since I've barely played any actual Bejeweled. But I think every game that Infinite Interactive made between Puzzle Quest 1 and 2 must have been a significant monetary loss or something, because everything in Puzzle Quest 2 felt like it was cutting corners. I've been told the multiplayer is less completely broken than in the first game, but everything else about the sequel is just poor. The art style looks really generic and lame. The battles are barely more visually impressive: they still don't animate, but sometime still images of your weapon or character class will appear on-screen, which is unfortunate because the character art is ugly as sin. Baffling, when the art in PQ1 was totally fucking rad. The game has like 10% as much writing as PQ1, and it's incredibly generic Diablo 1 bullshit instead of the reasonably original setting in PQ1. In PQ1, the quests were varied and you'd fight at most 2-3 battles before finishing a quest. In PQ2, there are way less quests, and they drag on forever, requiring you to clear out the same like 2 fucking enemy types over and over on each floor of the dungeon. The game has like 4 or 5 companions that join you, but only 2 of them ever say a goddamn word once they join you, and neither one is as interesting as any of the companions in PQ1. And PQ2 managed to remove all of the equipment/spell customization, and the interesting monster-capturing mechanic. Just terrible.

Trials 2. Thank god this only cost me $2 on Steam. I wasn't looking forward to it, just got it with a random bundle, but figured now is as good a time as any to mention it. I don't know what people see in this series. I don't find it fun or interesting to make a guy dry hump a dirt bike until he can physics his way over bullshit obstacle courses. Sorry, guys. The 2D dirt bike platformer genre is dead to me.

Twilight Princess. Yeah, not a fan. At all. I played about 12 hours of it, and half of the time I enjoyed it, and the other half of the time I was bored out of my skull thinking about how much better the other games in the seires are, and how much more original they were. Twilight Princess was just more; there was nothing new. Quantity over quality if you ask me.

Agreed. Sorry Twilight Princess, but Majora's Mask handled transformation way better than you, and it had 3 alternate forms instead of just 1. And your light world/dark world was paper-thin compared to Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time.

    Sigh.

It has to be this for me. I didn't have a Playstation 3, but before Lair came out, I wanted it JUST for that game. Factor 5?! Dragons!? Gorgeous game and bitchin' aerial combat? I'd sell my soul for that! Hype was THROUGH THE ROOF for that one, and I was right there with them- then the game came out, tanked at reviews, and left me in a state of shock. Then, of course, the studio shuttered and I went back to playing Rogue Squadron 2, which is totally amazing.

I'd also throw in Dark Void. I was extremely into the whole idea from the get-go, and all their pitches and the pedigree of the studio really had me excited. Combining Crimson Skies with The Rocketeer seemed like the ravings of a mad genius, and initial previews were GLOWING about the game. Even here on Giant Bomb they had nothing but nice things to say when they talked about it. And Capcom was actually putting out quality games at the time, so when the game came out and was a hitchy, buggy mess that was just kind of OK, I kept rushing back to my computer to see if new reviews came in because surely- SURELY- these ones were wrong, but it just stayed the same, or got worse. Dark Void REALLY burned me.

A bunch of games, but I got over it and I looked at them for the quality they are. The biggest disappointments at first though were Crysis 2 (which when compared to the first, it still kind of is), and Killzone 3. I didn't play Dragon Age 2 unfortunately (or fortunately?) So I can't be disappointed by that game.

Dragon Age 2. Madworld (luckily I only played $9 for it) Epic Mickey, Rayman Raving Rabbids.

This maybe weird but in a small way MGS4. I love the game, but some things they did with the characters seem like retcons or cop-outs.

After just beating RE4 again on the psn and it reminding me of what a masterpiece it was, I gotta o with RE5. Not just a dissappointment, but one of the worst games I've ever played.

I'm with you on this. They made one of the greatest games of all time and then everything leading up to RE5 made it look so bad ass. I played it and within the first 5 minutes, I just wasn't feeling it. Has to be one of the most half assed made games of all time, considering the amount it cost to make.
