I've had my eye on the community games, now rebranded "Indie Games", section of xbox live for some time now. When community games first surfaced, I downloaded a trial or two, but never purchased. I wasn't impressed with quality/price ratio and, to be honest, I was very hung up on the fact that there were (and still are) no achievements for any of the games. WIth the new content ranking mechanism and lower pricing structure now in place, I decided to take another look. Boy am I glad I did! I chose three games from the "top rated" section, and really had a blast. I tried, then quickly purchased, the following:
- I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1
- Miner Dig Deep (now only $1, no excuses folks!)
- Groov
I'm not going to review these titles, but just suffice to say they are all unique, all inexpensive, and all FUN. Very good to fire up and play for a few minutes at a time. More than anything, it was the lack of achievements that was holding me back from making any purchases in this little corner of xbox live. Once I let that go and gave myself permission to really play and spend some time with games where no achievements are involved, it was very liberating. I find I play the games differently (similar to gaming on my DS), and on the whole it is almost more enjoyable. Almost...
UPDATE: I purchased a few more indie games that I really like, and are worth checking out:
The Impossible Game (simple, fuin, addictive)
Platypus (claymation shooter)
Echoes+ (geometry wars + asteroids)
Fishing Girl (a fun little diversion)
DECIMATION X (a mix of space invaders and a shmup. Incredibly good fun!)
