With rumors of ads being plastered everywhere on the dashboard soon, Microsoft's move towards the minigame collections with Natal and the horrible hardware failure, I can say mine has turned negatively since buying my Xbox 360.

What about yours?

every where? or in one area on each dashboard page....and last image i saw of the ad's it wasn't on every page of the dashboard just the beginning area.
they are moving towards mini game collections with natal and nothing else or something? or are they offering a motion sensing technology that will supplement they're all ready strong game base. as for that I've had one 360 die on me my pro launch has lasted since launch my elite is the one that got e74 and that got fixed in 1 week 2 days.

I think the issue is that we XBL-goers pay for our Live subscriptions and therefore find it unfair and irritating to be bombarded with advertising from Doritos every time we boot up our consoles.

I don't really care about Natal one way or the other and understand that both it and the upcoming mini-game collections are an inevitability of Microsoft attempting to get its cut of the casual market.

The hardware failure rate of the 360, however, has been and always will be a huge detriment to its install base.

I bought a pro in July of 2006 and it's still running great.  Netflix has gotten me to use my 360 almost every day as an entertainment device and I also stream music from my PC to it for parties and things.  it's great.

They seem to know where they're going and seem a lot more organized then Sony or Nintendo.  At least in terms of software, and their online strategy.

Will speaks truth I can't help but agree and I get really annoyed when I see adverts in things people pay for, especially when someone like MS probably aren't desperate for the money, CS was one of the games I hated the most for this, the servers were all owned by the players, but yet they felt they could put adverts in there =/

The way they've changed lately I think the next console from Microsoft won't be called the Xbox or 360 or anything.  I believe they will name it something completely different, starting from scratch, and focus on the casual crowd, trying to steal the Nintendo Wii audience, because that's where the money is.  They won't have the most powerful hardware in it either, because the casual crowd won't spend too much money on a console.

I think that the image that kotaku posted is a HUGE over reaction I guarantee you the dashboard will never look like that or anywhere close. Besides the dashboard already has ads *gasp* its called the featured tab.

As a Nintendo lover I scoffed at the original Xbox (I still put in a lot of hours on Halo with friends) but now I see that despite Microsoft's heavy-handed approach and philosophy (most processing power = it must be awesome!) they did some things right that were emulated (hard drive, good online) and improved big with the 360.

That said I would hate to get an RROD and I am not excited for Natal (still think it sounds like some pregnancy product).

Go to MajorNelson's site and he explains what they're doing. They aren't going to be adding more.

Yes for the positive, the Xbox has totally won me over. A few years ago I would have bought a PS3 not the 360 but now I feel that with it's online, it's good games and the the user frendliness of the 360, that microsoft have done a good job and will keep using my 360 for years to come.

yes, after i had to call microsoft to get my 360 and hard drive fixed. it was hard to get them fixed because i had to argue with the guy to get them fixed. the horrible thing is that microsoft knew about the problems the 360 has.

i'm also hearing that the dashboard is going to have ads on the dashboard again. i kind of think that xbox live should be free if there are ads there. it doesn't even seem that great because psn is the same thing they both seem the same to me.

In one aspect in particular it has moved for the positive :

The 360 has shown the value of their software development.  So many people justly complain about Windows, and have for years.  However, the software-side feats MS has accomplished on the 360 shows their value as a huge powerful software company.  The way they've implemented stuff like background soundtracks into every game, while still using less RAM than Sony on the PS3.  All the features they've been able to implement on 360 since launch (there wasn't even background downloading at first).

I was pro Microsoft before I got my Xbox 360, because I was previously biased towards Microsoft computers, because that's what I grew up with. Now that I've got my 360, I think I probably feel about the same way in regards to Microsoft. I don't love them or anything, and they've made mistakes, and I don't love the new direction they've taken the console in, but they made a brilliant console with lots of brilliant games to play. And that's all that matters.

I have and unused ps3 and a 360 I used nearly everyday. Mainly because of the controller.

I really liked the 360 console as far as features and stuff. I just had problems with the console reliability and customer service. I got sick of dealing with it and bought a PS3 and don't regret it a bit. I own both and don't have a strong bias towards either side but in the end my opinion of MS has gone down. My first xbox (not xbox 360) still works just fine and hasn't skipped a beat. I've gone through at least 5 360's. If my 360 ran smoothly i would be nothing but positive but since ive had my share of problems i have to say my opinion of the company has gone way down

My opinion of microsoft as a company has increased by a lot. The way they have handled the RROD is excellent for a company like Microsoft. How did Sony deal with disk read errors last gen? They stuck by the standard one year warranty and pretty much ignored the problem. I would have expected MS to do the same with the RROD. They are a large corporate business, and it's standard practice to ignore customers, and put profits first. But they haven't. They've taken steps to help people who have RROD. Sure, it's not perfect, and they should have built the hardware properly in the first place, but other companies have had similar problems, and MS has dealt with the problems well compared to others.

Definitely for the better. The 360 might have problems with its reliability, but it's certainly a better console than their original and it's lineup of games is arguably the best of any of the current game consoles. They've clearly gotten more comfortable with this business and know what they're doing. There's not much bad stuff I can say about Microsoft this gen. They've stepped it up and just keep getting better. They might not have the most console sales, but I think as far as gamers are concerned, they're the ones that are on top right now.

It goes up and down, but I suppose once everything levels out I have a much greater respect for them than I used to, mainly because for once some of their actions i'm seeing benefit from (XBLA for example, Community Games, XNA, the LIVE functionality) whereas before when my only contact with them was through windows OS, I was seeing only negative in their decisions (and decisions imposed on them by other people, such as the fucking bundle fiasco and the resulting billions of different versions of an OS) so overall my opinion on them has improved.

They still make a lot of bad decisions imo, but then so do all businesses from the eyes of a consumer (even though I like to think i'm 75% consumer minded, and 25% logical, and 150% raving Fallout fanboy)

Really didn't care for the Xbox as it didn't have a good variety of games or enough top notch ones. With 360, they've invested in First Party and exclusive games, keeping me a happier customer. Now if they only had a reliable model

You make it sound like the ads will be videos you have to watch before the 360 starts up all the way. They can easily be ignored. You pay your cable company but you still have to watch ads between shows on TV, that's a lot more intrusive then anything Microsoft may add to the 360.

In the middle, simply because my opinion of Microsoft only strengthens because of the Zune products.

@Babble: I also payed $350 for a console, plus $50 a year for Live. Don't get me wrong, I gladly shell out the $50 a year for Live, but if I pay the $50 and STILL get ad's everywhere, I don't think the $50 will be such a no-brainer. Besides, I'm pretty sure the free PlayStation Network doesn't have ads. In fact, I don't think there are ad's at all on the XMB...

Not trying to turn this into a "Sony vs. Microsoft" or "Xbox Live bs. PlayStation Network" thread, but seriously. Unacceptable.

Going from the XBOX, which is one of my favorite consoles until date, to the XBOX 360 in 2005 i was very excited. I was blown away how many changes and new features where given to me in the XBOX 360. However looking back now, i see how much extra i had to buy for it, which as in fact made my XBOX 360 purchase more expensive than my PS3 i bought a year back, but thats another story.

Now here we are in 2009, and my love for the XBOX 360, has turned almost to a bitter hate. Getting two RRoD´s didn't help on that either. Or for that matter the new dashboard, which i really hate, plus the avatars annoy me so damn much. Why you cant turn them off i will never understand.

And the latest talk about Microsoft wanting to plaster the dashboard in silverlight ads, has made me question, yet again why i pay for XBOX Live Gold. And that is a thing i have been asking my self for any years now, cause i´m not so fortunate to live in the USA, or any other country that get the Netflix deals, the movie rentals or any of those big key features.

The only thing we really get here in Denmark, is the option to download demos, trailers, XBLA games, Addons and of course play online.. that´s pretty much what my Gold subscription covers.

But i already have that same option for free on my PS3.

Yeah, I don't like them, I don't like them one bit.  The second my Live subscription is up I won't be able to play any of the games I've bought.  Great.  Judging from the crap on the dashboard the last few weeks apparently the Iraq War is sponsored by Microsoft.  "Celebrate your independance by watching us be idiots in another country that is being economically subjugated through the tried-and-true methods of brute force."  Kinda makes me wanna wrap my POS 360 in a flag and set it on fire in my front yard.  Might as well, It's due for hardware failure any day now, e.g. I've been playing it consistantly for about 5 months.  I hate the machine, and I hate the asshats using said machine on Live.  I won't go with a MS product next generation.

@SolemnOaf: Why won't you be able to play any of the games you bought when your Live subscription is up? Your mommy taking away your 360?

Yes, because I am a 15 year old that lives at home with his parents.  Or it could be the liscensing bullshit Microsoft puts on all of their DLC games and their patches that will prevent me from playing the latest version of any game I am in possession of that requires a patch.  Yes, I know you can redownload them but If I did that everytime I had hardware failure by now I would have spent hours and hours doing just that.  You know this, I know this, it is fact.  The day I spend 5 hours redownloading all of my arcade games, and all of my patches for all of my games is the day before I'll have to send my 360 back to the repair center and have to do it all over again.
