More XBox 360 Hardware Failures - Now It's the Controllers

I've never had an controller out right fail like you're saying but there are definitely a few faults with them.  Nothing completely major, just annoying.  Obviously the crappy D pad is a major fault but beyond that wear and tear seems to do a number on the 360 controller.

It took about 3000 hours of usage before things started to wear out.  The left joystick is common, as is any buttons or triggers you use frequently in the games you play.  I'm on my second controller currently, and the left joystick is just starting to go after a year.  It doesn't fully snap back into place and the left stick button isn't very sensitive anymore.  Same thing happened with my first controller, and also the X button lost the "spring" to it.  Like I said before, nothing major, everything still works, it's just annoying overall.

Luckily this time I bought the 2 year, 10 dollar product warranty at best buy.  I would suggest others who play a lot do the same.  I plan on exchanging for a new controller here in a couple months once this one goes to shit.  Then you also have the option to pay another 10 dollars for another 2 year warranty on your replacement controller as well.

I've had no problems with the buttons, but the left stick is screwed up on two or three of them.  It's only really noticeable on shooters.  Once you release it, it seems to be stuck  sometimes which causes a slight drift on screen.  It is more likely to stick if only moved slightly and then released, such as minor aim adjustments in Rainbow Six Vegas.  The left stick gets the most strain though, so I understand why it is jacked up.

My controller that came with my elite has only one issue. Sometimes the click on the left Analogue doesn't register. Too much sprinting in COD4.

With both of my 360 controllers, the left analog default position is apparently slightly off-center and to the left. It can be really annoying in certain games, like GTAIV, where Niko will slowly move because of this while I'm not moving him and will end up walking off of a building to his death.

My system controller's d-pad is almost to the point of not working entirely.  It's about 75/25 now, but a couple more weeks and it'll be gone.  I wonder how that'll work since I have a warranty for the console it came with.

My controller is 2 years old, and apart from the fact that the thumbsticks are worn and smooth and fit my thumb placements perfectly, the controller is unchanged. My rechargeable batteries last like half as long now though.

It's weird. I log on to XBL today, and my profile got corrupted. I had to recover my gamer tag, and spent like 15 minutes on it.

You would appear to be alone. I haven't had a single problem with my controllers.

You just abuse your controllers somehow.  Nobody's had any problems with them, so I think someone's just out to hate on the 360 >:(

Considering how many games I own, and the fact that I own 2 XBox 360s, I don't think I'm out to 'hate' on the 360.

I tend to drop 20 to 30 hours a week into gaming with most of it spent on the XBox 360.  For the last year played a ton of APF2K8 (www.2kfootballlstrategy.com), where I was pressing the A button quite often to run.  E_Rock suggested that we should get 3000 hours of playtime out of the controllers, but I believe I'm seeing around 400 to 500  hours of playtime before button failure ensues.    I think I'll follow E_Rock's advice on the replacement plan considering I haven't had a controller last longer than 6 months.

Like most people here my controllers are fine and all my friends controllers are fine. Your personal experience does noit neccessarily reflect the experience in generalm this is an isolated problem and is bound to happen with any console.

If there's suede inside 360 controllers I seriously won't know what the fuck to think anymore.

I've always thought the 360 controllers were the only reliable thing that they made.

I kind of want a 360, but it's hardware horror stories like these that keep me from getting one.

Hardware horror stories are always blown out of proportions. Take the dive.

It's just that I've heard of one or two people sending back their Wii or Playstation, and hundreds sending back their consoles. It's not ALL exaggeration, something's wrong.... is there a particular kind, like Pros? I was going to get an Elite if anything, are their rates better?

Well I guess the exaggeration I was mostly talking about was this particular story. I I was literally the first person in this town to buy an Elite on launch day... (at least to buy an Elite IN the town) and i've had my Elite ever since. Never had a problem. My brother? He had one RROD, sent it in 2 weeks later got a new console on microsofts dime. Just go for it.

My controller still works fine, besides the fact that battery life in the wireless ones are complete shit.

A 360 is definitely worth getting, especially at this time. The failure rates aren't blown out of proportion though...it still is really bad, and seems to occur as much as it ever did, but that aside, microsoft is really good with giving you a new console or repairing your old as long as you're still under your 3 year warranty. As far as elites being better, I have no idea, I have one and it has red ringed several times, but its the kinda thing where it did it once or twice, then never again for a month or so...so hopefully it stays that way.

I have 2 controllers that I've had since I got my 360 two years ago, and they both still work great. One of them the thumbsticks are a little worn since I used that one to play with the most, but it's nothing problematic.

In the past though I've only had one controller fail on me and that was a Gamecube controller.

I have had a couple fail. but i have like 6 now for random reasons so its never been a problem. ms seems pretty good about swapping them out though.
