The Windows Media Center/Zune interface is nasty, even more space is wasted than before, and it was a stupid idea to do a redesign like that.

Granted, I'll be glad for the technological part of it- the new 8 person parties and the guide finally not taking up half the screen...

But that dashboard makes me want to punch a baby. Especially the forced avatars. If you still think avatars will be optional, or that you'll get to keep your gamerpicture the same as it always has been, you're screwed. I really hope they implement them, but at this point, even the T-shirt thing doesn't even seem likely. The reason they aren't showing themes or pics is because they have probably gauged the user reaction to the new implementations to be terrible. Nothing about the way M$ has handled this makes me feel like the customers are being considered in the decision at all. The dashboard was good- if cluttered- and they could easily have built on that, instead of a bunch of scrolling, ugly squares.

I for one welcome the redesign and don't find it "nasty" at all. And yes, avatars are optional.

I don't care for the avatars, but I don't think the new interface will suck. It just depends on whether you like it as 3D or 2D.

Do you own a 360 to look at or play games?

The new dashboard looks cleaner and easier to use, and as long as it works smoothly, that's all that matters.

"Jeez at least wait for it to come out before you start bashing it. "

Why? I'd rather voice my opinion now, and then let it prove itself right later. There's no law against speculation or discussion (granted I may sound a little inflammatory in my first post- not my intention). Most other 360 forums have them.

The new dashboard looks sleek, moreover the interface will, seemingly, be more efficient.  The avatars are optional and you WILL get to keep your themes.  All the features they are implementing, I am throughly excited for ..... :D

The Blade system is still a good example of UI design done right.  The problem is that the Blades were designed before Microsoft really had an idea of how all-encompassing the service was going to be, and they've really struggled to fit all of the stuff they're trying to show you now.  Between trying to advertise new things and give you access to games, movies, pictures, music, demos, downloads, trailers, and the list goes on and on, the blades have become too cluttered and really wonky to find stuff in.  The stuff we see where you click on a game and a little sidebar pops up with its downloadable content, and things like that, will do wonders towards making the entire Dashboard less focused around The List Of Stuff and more on "I want to play BioShock.  Oh, hey, there's a new DLC out? I should get that."  Basically, rather than having to go out and browse for what you want, the dashboard will bring it to you.

Of course, that's just what it looks like right now.  Who knows how it'll actually turn out?  I've got confidence in the 360 team, because they already surprised me once with the current Dashboard.

Yeah, but you can't say that the new MicroMiis will be mandatory, they've said officially, on the record, that you'll be able to use your current gamer picture, and E confirmed it on major nelson's podcast. For them to go back on that would be suicide, especially since most of the current 360 are hardcore gamers who will want to stick with regular gamerpics.

And the new design looks nothing like media center.

I think the current gamerpics are crap. There isn't a single one that I feel accurately represents "me" online. Do I think the Mii-like avatars will do a better job? Not really, no. However, they are a step in the right direction.

Holy crap you're right, this is actually a huge conspiracy by Microsoft to prevent us from buying more Gamerpics, because Microsoft hates money, and having to use an Avatar would prevent us from using Gamerpics.

It's all become clear.

Congratulations, your half-baked thought process and thinly veiled insult on my psyche has provided something for me to reply to.

Microsoft LOVES money. If everybody knew their gamerpictures were going to be virtually useless (who wants to see it on some twat's t-shirt? if they even bother implementing that) then nobody would buy them. Hell, I'll be insanely pissed if I have to lose my Scotsman (Samurai Jack) gamerpicture. I bought that thing (although it's the only thing I've ever bought).

Most people use free gamerpictures anyway- the Gears of War, Halo, McDonalds, MLG, etc. I barely ever see anyone who bought a picture pack- I can't imagine sales are THAT boistrous- but why shouldn't Microsoft keep taking in as much profit as they can before they ditch them later on?

Edit: and Riddler- bite me.

its what it needs, the blades were awesome before they filled them up with advertising and gamerpics and all the stuff that it doesnt need. The new redesign makes it easy for any consumer to work out and isnt intimidating like the blades were.

Uh... what use do they have aside from allowing you to identify players, which is the function the avatars are serving?

Not much other than identification, yes- but people have payed for them. Nobody (especially a recent customer) wants to be told they just invested in something that was rendered completely worthless the next week/month/day/whatever.

Edit: How in hell is my argument broken? I'm not trolling or flaming. You're the one who trolled in this thread.

It's broken because you don't know that the Avatars are Mandatory, infact the only thing we've been told was from Major Nelson who specifically stated that they were not mandatory and that we could still use our gamerpics. I'll find a link if you don't believe me.

People, calm the **** down, do you think they'd just go and rape the wallets of all their fans? Hell no. I know people who are obcessed with getting gamerpics and have spent well over a sane amount of cash on them and won't update to it.

And this is just E3 that has shown it, what you see may not be what you would like, but its called a demo, demos are the unfinished product, of course stuff will be refined and remade to suit what people really want, thats why we have the freaking update in the first place.

And the avatars are way better than the Wii Mii's...holy good god they are horrible looking, who wants to play a game where your character looks like an egg with arms and legs...

Oh I believe you. I just don't believe Major Nelson.

That's only one part of my argument anyway- and this entire thread is speculation until the date we all get the dashboard. You don't know they're NOT mandatory, and like I said- it's not like Microsoft would tell everybody they were scrapping gamerpictures earlier then they would have to. So the argument still stands.

Edit: and I could still be totally proven wrong- search algorithms could be amazing, the theme integration could make this thing beautiful and gamerpictures could be left exactly as they are; but for the time being, that is not the case.

No, it doesn't, really.  Your argument was, essentially, "Yeah it's not out yet but they're lying about avatars being optional."  Now you're trying to say that "It's not out, so you may or may not be wrong, HA HA!" is the same argument?
