Xbox One: live TV available in US only at launch, requires separate device

Xbox One’s live TV fucntionality will only be available in the US at launch, a press release from Microsoft has confirmed.

In a release sent to VG247 this evening confirms that Live TV with Kinect navigation, Live TV with One Guide, Trending, and NFL on Xbox will only be available in North America at launch. The release added that Microsoft anticipates a global roll-out over time.

As shown in the Microsoft reveal stream, and confirmed in the release,

It just means you need a cable box. This isn't surprising at all because the device didn't have a coaxial in.

This just makes me question the feature even more. You need a TV to play your Xbox, and you need the cable to use this new feature, so why not cut out the middle man and just watch it on your TV?

It is still bullshit. They made it look like you need nothing else and all the stuff you have seen on the stage also was totally fake then^^

Yeah. Unfortunately we've reached the System Wars portion of the console cycle. Ugh.

Because the Xbox One comes with an HDMI input on board... no need to switch from HDMI1 to HDMI2 on your TV, so to speak.

I don't get why everyone's bitching about it.

How do people already not know this? Did people really think Microsoft was getting into the cable provider business? People are dumb.

This is the kind of thing Microsoft shouldn't have to spell out for you. It should be self-evident. Also hey, the Xbox One isn't including a television to play games on either, what's that bullshit?

Instead of plugging your cable box into your TV via HDMI you plug it into your Xbox instead...
    What's the big deal?

Because it is fucking stupid. Even easy cheap ass TV have a card slot in there these days in Germany. Why would it have been so hard to integrate this as well in this All in one Box? Fact is they faked the whole stuff you have seen. Fact is they made you believe you need nothing else fact is they only care about the US market and the rest of the world will give a fuck.

Well... sure. That's the most accessible way for them to do it. Otherwise, Microsoft would have to be making content deals with cable companies. This just allows it to work out of the box with most providers.

If you have the service today you have:

    - The TV

    - The cable box

Beyond the nicety of integrated remote control, there is no reason for the XBox 1 to be there to deliver Live TV because your service provider and TV does that right now.

I am sorry but we don't have this shit in Germany. and mostly Europe. And I will say it again they made it seem like you would need nothing esle and this actually would have menat something just like the name. One DEVICE for everything but now you still need something to experience it.

And yes rather than moneyhatting EA they should have gone all out and made deals with a cable company.

They probably didn't fake it. They probably had a cable box outputting hdmi into the Xbone.

because then how would Microsoft cross reference your viewing patterns, people in the room, attention to screen, and other valuable marketing details with the shows you watch and sell it to advertisement firms? got the have the xbone in the video loop to do that.

@darji: You seem to be one of the only people who think this is a surprise or scandal. I have no interest in this Xbox TV stuff, but I, and most of the Internet, assumed you needed a cable box. That's WHY people are bitching that this is US focused.

It will use a CableCard reader... It, not shockingly, looks like windows media center. Any windows PC can already do the TV/DRV stuff with a cable card reader and has for years.

of course, cable cards are US only (I think), but other counties have IPTV and for those system it should be pretty ez to have the xbox be the receiver for that.
