Confirmed today that you no longer have to type in those pain in the ass redeem codes. Kinect can scan in a QR code for you

Well, in this instance, they're actually adding something practical. Also, a weak justification for mandatory Kinect.

heh. I'm guessing there are other reasons besides just this for having it be a part of the system. But yeah, they still have a ways to go in making that more compelling argument.

Well yeah its nice, but I just always thought people thought they were dumb, but also I don't think this is the main thing they will try to justify Kinect with.

Well, at least they finally found one good use for the kinect, but couldn't they just put into the smartglass and we could just scan it with a phone like every other app?

I don't think it was ever supposed to be "justification" for the Kinect, more just utilizing something they know they will have available. I think it's a great idea in theory.

I use it to see if my friends are online, but that's it.

Am I the only one thinking people are just going to start randomly scanning QR codes to see if they yield free goods? It'll be just like the Monster Rancher titles on the PSX.

This is something Microsoft should have been doing with Kinect from the start. You should have been able to do things like hold up things like points card to the camera to add it to your account.

Its amazing the hate for the kinect. Admittedly the current kinect is a bust, with the only kinect based game that I've enjoyed being 'Gunslinger'. But I really enjoyed playing ME3 with the voice recognition for my squads movements.

I would need to see some facts proving that game developers would HAVE to use the kinect purely because the kinect is mandatory.

Sometimes its nice to be naive and excited about the xbox one, maybe enjoy the evolving creature that is the new generation of consoles and not be predictably cynical months before the system is released.

When games are made for a PC, the developers have as many buttons as there are keys on a keyboard to work with. When games are made on the PS3 or 360, developers have the same amount of buttons to work with for either.

When games will be made for the PS4, developers will have just as many buttons AND a touch pad. When those same games will be made for the Xbox One, developers will have just as many buttons AND kinect voice recognition / hand gestures.

The idea isn't that developers will HAVE to use kinect because it's there. The idea is that developers will HAVE to use kinect because it's their only option.

You mentioned ME3. The same button was used to run, take cover, and revive teammates in that game, and it felt awful at times trying to revive a teammate only to find yourself taking cover instead. Very poorly designed aspect of that game. So let's say that Bioware dedicates a specific button to reviving teammates in ME4.

On PS4, that could mean a quick tap to the right side of the touchpad, or a quick "down to up" swipe on the touchpad. On the Xbox One, that same command would either have to be a voice command, a motion of your hand, or it would use the same system as ME3 and not have a dedicated button.

THIS is what people mean when they say that developers will HAVE to use kinect.

I bet by the time Kinect 3 comes out (maybe 3 years from the X1 launch?), Kinect will have enough cool features in place and will be precise enough that suddenly gamers will be clamoring for it.

Kinect 2 will be the generation that has to pave the way to that point with a ton of little convenience updates like these.

Those codes take like 30 seconds to type in on a keyboard, which is much shorter than it will take for Kinect to warmup, recognize who is in the room, and try to scan but oops it is too dark you must redo.

Plus redeem codes are like serial keys from the 90's, its all nostalgic

Once again, you say HAVE to use.

If there was no kinect you'd be stuck with your problem of one button or using microsoft surface. I must admit I never had that issue with ME3 but have definitely had it with other games. All developers, 'in the past' admittedly, have used kinect as an optional. And I imagine it will continue to be that way because there needs to be an option, especially for people who are mute or amputees.

I think the decision is down to the developers ability to come up with a solution rather than blaming microsoft for developing their own interface, which is developmental yes, but eventually as others have said it may be something we love. The fact is kinect is an option to use, not a HAVE to, even if microsoft pay developers to use the device there will always be another key option.
