So the naming in this game is incredible and it only gets better with the addition I nicknames. I'm just curious what is your favorite solider name (and nickname) that were absolutely random?

A few I mine were Bob "Prophet" Bailey. Just had a nice ring to it. Sadly he perished in the alien bad, R.I.P Major Bailey.

Yoko miyamoto- well that's self explanatory, sadly he didn't survive long

Hiraro Kojima- again self explanatory an again did not survive long. Ill keep updating as I play but those are a few standouts.

I'm obligated to say I'm on my phone so I apologize for any mis spellings.

My favorite was an Irish heavy with a flat top named Casey "Casino" Duff.

Did he have a rad beard? It just sounds liked he'd have one

My all-star psychic sniper was a Chinese dude named Chen "Emo" Cheng. Emo Cheng has seen some serious shit.

And I had an assault whose first name I forget, because to me she will always be "Double Down" Jenkins.

Vinny is right, the nicknames are one of the best parts of the whole game.

Just a sweet horseshoe mustache. He made it through 30-40 missions because after I got him I used him for every mission until the end of the game.

I have a heavy called Ben Payne, but unfortunately he has a really dumb nick name which I cannot remember.

#9 Posted by Levius (1288 posts) -

Benjamin "D.O.A" Robinson.

He died the mission after he earned the nickname.

Also my long serving heavy Fernando "Tectonic" Martinez, I just like the nickname.

One of my initial squad members was Shigeru "Dice" Miyamoto. He became my first Colonel level Assault.

#11 Posted by Freshbandito (695 posts) -

Dwayne 'Zero' Kelso, my sniper who's made some game saving shots, the kind of overwatch / low % chance shots that save a real bad situation.

#12 Posted by Harpell (185 posts) -

Mohammed "Crater" Majid. A heavy who has served in over half my missions.

I also have a Russian named Igor Popov. As soon as he earned a nickname, I changed it to "Iggy Pop". It was too good not to do it.

I liked Doreen "All Day" Stewart, run & gun assault flanking and critting all day every day.

#14 Posted by Bourbon_Warrior (4569 posts) -

Alf "Rape Dungeon" Stewart

#15 Posted by zFUBARz (672 posts) -

my favourite is still my sniper, Richard Richard, who's nickname is Longshot

So I've got a Cpt. Dick 'Longshot' Dick on my team.

it's not witty, but god damn it cracks me up that the game made that.

I had a Duncan MacLeod for a total of one mission. Found out the hard way that he was indeed not a highlander when he took a plasma bolt from the first sectoid he stumbled upon.

I can't remember any real names off the top of my head, but my favorite random nicknames have been "Angel" for a medic I had decked out in all white before he earned the nickname. "Stalker" for my badass British sniper lady gets runner up.

Pulled a "Shawn White" as my first support, so I QUICKLY gave him the flat top, orange/red hair, and red armor.

You did the right thing there

@Bourbon_Warrior

Alf "Rape Dungeon" Stewart

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Oh man, love Alf.

Anyway, my best was Major Lars 'Wolverine' Milsen (iffy on his surname), who was my superstar soldier who died in true heroic fashion, leading a group of chrysallids and Mutons away from my battered forces during the first base assault and rapid firing a bunch of those motherfuckers to death before they finally tore him apart.

We poured one out for him back at HQ, and poured another out for his sick blonde handlebar

How do you change armor colors? Unable to find that option anywhere.

I believe it was a pre order bonus on pc. I think the option is calle "armor detail"
#25 Edited by WulfBane (206 posts) -

@DystopiaX Yeah, as @Sackmanjones suspected, I pre-ordered on Steam so I get the giant flat-top & extra customizability options (part of the 1st tier of their tiered pre-order unlock system)

I can confirm Ryan's testament that Paul Walker is, indeed, a possible name.

Not the best but I had a random soldier named Hamza Aziz, which is a guy over at Destructoid. Doubt it was coincidence.

#29 Posted by BaneFireLord (3078 posts) -

Malika "Wildchild" Canaan was a favorite.

#30 Edited by Barrabas (339 posts) -

I managed to roll a "Hideo Kojima," but my favorite random name I got was one "Axel Wolf." If that's not the best alien killer "Look Ma I'm a badass" soldier name I don't know what is. May he rest in peace.

I have a randomly rolled British dude named "Thomas Thomas" right now. If he lives to get a nickname, hopefully it'll start with a T and end with an S.

#32 Posted by Grillbar (1948 posts) -

mine arent great i think the best one i got is Nick "Fury" Power

#33 Posted by RandyF (177 posts) -

Tim Allen.

#34 Posted by Lugburz (54 posts) -

One guy got named Arthur Knight, i flipped that name so it would read Knight Arthur, only if he survived a bit more to get the chance to see what kind of nickname he would get.

I saw this thread and went "I cant think of any." While for the last four days I have had an assault dude rolling with me with a name I keep going "That is a familiar name." Once I realized who it was I decided to put him in the worst situations to die.....except the kept surviving....WHY WONT HE DIE!

WHY WONT JACK "DUKE" THOMPSON DIE!!

I have Jeff "Tank" Davis rolling with me.

and I had a Nat Jackson. It just sorta sounds awesome. NAT JACKSON!

This thread is making me regret not buying XCOM more than anything else.

#37 Posted by TheHT (12202 posts) -

Takumi "Pops" Yamaguchi

#38 Edited by MetalBaofu (1450 posts) -

I've got a Jorge Garcia. He has no nickname yet.

Also have a heavy with the nickname "Papa Bear." Arthur "Papa Bear" Hayes, to be exact.

#39 Posted by Terramagi (1168 posts) -

After looking at the names file, it does appear that most of these "whomg totally a reference" are indeed random.

For example, "Hideo" and "Kojima" are not linked in any way. They both EXIST, certainly, but you have a 1/21 chance of drawing "Hideo" and a 1/44 chance of getting "Kojima".

#40 Posted by Ben_H (3549 posts) -
@Terramagi: The real question is what should his nickname be? Paul "Cop" Walker? Paul "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSS" Walker? Paul "DUDE I ALMOST HAD YOU" Walker? Paul "10 Second Car" Walker?
#41 Posted by gaminghooligan (1648 posts) -

Vincent 'Tombstone' Vega

#42 Posted by big_jon (6104 posts) -

Papa Bear, I have had him since my first mission, he is a tank.

#43 Posted by Fishdingo5 (29 posts) -

"Septic" and he is my support medic, I can't remember his real name though. I have to laugh every time a guy named Septic heals someone.

#44 Posted by supamon (1339 posts) -

Thomas "Train" Thomas Assault class.

#45 Posted by gerrid (394 posts) -

Mordecai "Vita" David, support dude from Israel

#46 Posted by Village_Guy (2744 posts) -

I really like my US Sniper, Kate "Spectre" Harper

#47 Posted by Fierrze (185 posts) -

Norwegian assault duder named Lars "All Day" Larsson. He is one tough mofo and my squad leader.

#48 Posted by Yodasdarkside (343 posts) -

"Skinner" has been my best Medic nickname so far. Makes her sound like a sadistic nurse.

#49 Posted by StrawHatLaw13 (169 posts) -

Sarah "Crash" Burns.

Also my only asian soldier got the nickname Zulu and that reminded me of Star Trek.
