They also have a (new?) pre-order tier system where more pre-orders = more goodies.

The classic tactical turn-based combat returns in this modern re-imagining of X-COM: UFO Defense.
If you want to throw money at this game, Steam will take it!
I would recommend buying it from Greenman Gamingand using this 25% off code - GMG25-1BW0K-K1A3G (the game uses Steamworks, so you'll still end up playing it through Steam anyway).
Valve, you crazy genius bastards!
I read on the 2K forums, that even if we don't hit Reward tier 1, we'll get the Elite Soldier Pack. It's kinda rigged.
I'm guessing the same is true for Reward 2, those TF2 hats are probably done already, no point in not putting them out there at the end.
Tier 3 tho, I guess they can not give Civ5 for free, no probs.
Reward2:
Reward 3: CIV 5!
The XCOM TF2 items were in an update earlier in the week, so one has to imagine that they would come either way right?
I don't know, it's just a weird system. However, as someone who doesn't already own Civ 5, and who plays TF2 more than goes outside, I guess it couldn't hurt to pre order.
@Pudge: I assume that if it reaches the goal, everyone who pre-purchased will get the hats in Genuine quality.
Overall it's a pretty fucking odd system, and it's not gonna change my stance on pre-purchasing games; even though this is one of the two games that I'm looking forward to for the rest of the year.
I would rather buy the Physical Edition and get.
- Fold out poster of the XCOM base
- Art book detailing the conceptual journey of re-imagining the classic
- Patch of the XCOM "Vigilo/Confido" insignia
- Digital bonus items including multi-monitor desktops, soundtrack, and more
- Special Edition Features include a fold out poster of the XCOM base, an art book detailing the conceptual journey of re-imagining the classic, a patch of the XCOM "Viglio/Confido" insignia and digital bonus items including multi-monitor desktops, soundrack and more.

I'm getting both :|
I know, its fucked up, but my collector's edition is being signed by the firaxis team (a friend worked in that project), so its arriving a bit late, and fuckit if I'm waiting a week to play that game.
NEVER open your physical copy in that case.
In fact, enshrine it in your house.
I mean, you're already buying two copies of the game, you're clearly fucking insane enough to pull it off.
Greenmangaming has it for $49.99 plus 25% off with the current onsite coupon (so $37.50) and it activates on Steam.

I am on his side and this is the version I preordered... although I nowadays prefer digital releases because of storage issues... oh well, I should be able to cram it somewhere between all the other boxes...
I came a little when I reloaded steam last night and saw that pop up in a notification. I will be a sad marine if we don't at least get to tier 2. Not just for the lack of TF2 items but because it means a game as awesome as this is not selling well.

I came into the XCom series way too late to enjoy it, but I loooooooove me some Firaxis...
Tough call.
I have never played an XCom game before and I for one have had a perma hard on for this game since I first heard about it. I should go see a doctor...
I may or may not have pre-ordered it immediately upon hearing that I could do so. I'm pretty much done with TF2 by now, but free hats are never a bad thing.
I was having trouble choosing between this and Dishonored (as they come out the same day and I am poor), but the developer livestreams pushed me over the edge.
Preordering this and Natural Selection 2. I do love some alien on human action.

I've been thinking about it. It would be way more valuable unopened, but goddamn I wanna see that art book.

This is a game I really need a demo for. I've never played anything similar to it and really dunno what to expect. I don't even know if I'll like it, especially as someone who has zero interest in Civilization.
Dude!
1.- go buy the original X-COM:UFO Defense from steam and play it. (warning: its a game from the 90s, OLD AS FUCK, but I still play it every once in a while, its fantastic).
2.- check out Jake Solomon, the lead designer of X-COM: Enemy Unknown playing against some dude from Amazon
http://www.twitch.tv/2k/b/331088930
3.- Preorder X-COM: Enemy Unknown from Steam, so I can get my hats
4.- ???
5.- Profit
Can't wait for this game gotdamn. Turn based strategy with a budget!?!? Pinch me someone.

That's a great release day for unique and games worth supporting (as long as they don't inexplicably turn out to be disasters, both look awesome)
What percentage of Steam's users actually play TF2? They seem to use it a lot in their incentives, but I don't really know anyone who's still into it.
Does Steam charge you immediately for pre-orders or is it a "when the game is out and downloadable" kind of thing?

Immediate.

If you have a Steam account, you have TF2 one hundred percent, guaranteed.
I'm going to pre-order this anyway, so the tier thing is just weird. There really isn't anything out there done by smaller companies to survive that bigger corporations won't emulate to make even more money, is there? (I'm referring to Triple A titles that also have microtransactions *cough* Mass Effect 3 *cough*.)
I swore off pre-orders for a long time after getting burned by Civ 5, but this looks like too much fun. I really hope it's not another Civ 5.
