After SHODAN went rogue and took over the Citadel space station, XERXES became one of the first AIs created to run whole ships/space stations. In contrast to SHODAN, he had the appearance of an older man. To prevent another disaster, XERXES was made to be solely capable of calculations necessary for the ship's systems; as self consciousness was feared by many to be dangerous.
However a hasty mission to the planet Tau Ceti V led CEO Anatoly Korenchkin and crew to a crater filled with eggs created by "The Many". Anatoly, now under the control of "The Many", proceeded to reprogram XERXES. He was unable to achieve true awareness, so XERXES retained the demeanor of a "machine". Xerxes continued many of his tasks despite of the circumstances, he is even heard announcing the following:
"Tri-Optimum reminds you that there are only one-hundred-sixty-three shopping days until Christmas. Just 1 extra work cycle twice a week will give you the spending money you need to make this holiday a very special one".
