Yakuza 3 TGS Trailer Goes Public

Posted by Ryan (1248 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

By most critical accounts, the Tokyo Game Show was kind of a bust this year. Part of the problem, as we discussed in one of our TGS podcasts, is that so much of what was being shown was just slightly newer versions of games we had seen at a previous trade show or press event. There were still a few rare exceptions, and one of the sights that impressed me the most was the epic 11-minute trailer for Ryu ga Gotoku 3, better known as Yakuza 3 in the US. Actually, the Yakuza series isn't really known very well at all stateside, but apparently they go nuts for it in Japan. After seeing that trailer, I get the appeal. While it was only being shown in a small, low-capacity theater at TGS, Sega has now released this trailer online for all to see, and even though it's thick with Japanese (which I can neither read nor speak,) makes tons of references to the first two Yakuza games (which I never played,) and highlights the game's all-star Japanese voice cast (who I've never seen before,) I still find its apparent insanity totally mesmorizing. I'm also curious to see just how inaccurate my original interpretation of this trailer really was.

That's an awesome trailer actualy.

#4 Posted by albedos_shadow (1485 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

So help me god if this doesn't get a North American release date soon.

#5 Posted by TrueEnglishGent (3672 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

Not bad, but the trailer was way to long and I (understandably) didn't understand a word of it. Maybe the reason it's never taken off outside Japan is because it's so Japanese orientated.

Another cut-scene based game for the PS3? Wasn't MGS4 enough!? Gheez, I mean the thing has Blue Ray, there's your interactive movie right there.

#7 Edited by Aas (592 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

Is this a trailer or a compilation of all the game's cutscenes? Jez...

Hamana, hamana, hamana, hamana.

The kanji helps me, but not enough.  It's got a cool, 70's retro vibe that I like.  I mean, it might not be 70's with the magical fighter and all, but the sideburns and butterfly collars sorta push it in that direction. :)

I want this localized it seems filled with enough drama and craziness that I thought GTA IV lacked, it was too serious and realistic for its own good, this seems more like crazy San Andreas style but grittier.

i've always liked the Yakuza series, not many people know of the recent Yakuza game set in feudal japan, i hope to see this released in europe. i know the first sure did. Obviously it wont be around any time soon. Always loved the fighting. Sick Piledriver!

For the first part of that trailer i couldnt help start singing the main tune to Sonny Chiba's The Street Fighter.

5 seconds of Japanese flash to kanji for 5 seconds... repeat.
I can't speak Japanese and I can't read Kanji, someone should come out with a translation.

#13 Posted by Rorschach (314 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

Homeboy sounds like Keith David. If Keith David was japanese... Yakuza 3: Pyroclastic Flow.

I'd take Shenmue 3 EVERY day of the week but... please can this get localised for a Western release. I'd certainly buy it.

#15 Posted by Stevokenevo (572 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

Shenmue 3?......no, oh.....okay, looks amazing regardless.  Will it get translated and be brought out in the west?

#16 Posted by Callumrides (355 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

look pritty awosme,i dont understand any japanese nut i was fun making up my own dialog for it

#17 Posted by Kraznor (1502 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

My advice to everyone is to skip the first eight minutes of the trailer. Literally nothing happens other than a bunch of conversations in Japanese with no subtitles.

#18 Posted by PhilESkyline (673 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

Someone send this to Dattebayo to sub please lol.

Great trailer, I need to finish up the first 2 games to get ready for #3.
Yakuza games are awesome.

Great looking game!

#23 Posted by Hef (987 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

TaintedSun,

A) It's called an extended TRAILOR
B) Blu-ray - Sony was the first console to use DVD's also, but I bet you have tons; so why hate on blu-ray.
C) Lets see some gameplay first before we decide that it's going to be a "cut-scene based game."

Man i love fanboy ignorance! Lets ignore all facts and reason because I have a hard-on for microsoft!
Oh, and before you retort with "Oh your name is blue, I could say the same thing to you sony fanboy". The PS3 is just the console I play the most.  I like microsoft waaaay better than nintendo and the garbage they've been shoveling onto their system this year.

#26 Posted by Manachild (470 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

being a person who is a huge shenmue fan who is sadly aware of the reality that shenmue 3 will "probably" never be made this seems to look like a game thats in some ways similar in style and might be capable of filling my void caused by shenmue 2 to an extent.

#27 Posted by Sabata (784 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

So thats what anime faces look like in 3D.

#28 Posted by ArbitraryWater (8960 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

wow, that's 11 minutes of my life I could have used elsewhere. Maybe if I could read or speak Japanese it wouldn't be so incomprehensible.

#29 Posted by RawShark (236 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

No idea what just happened, but I sort of got a "GTA Shenmue" flavour in my mouth, and it don't taste half bad.

#30 Posted by KinjiroSSD (690 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

Not that much kanji, mostly hiragana and katakana. I'm not fluent enough yet to read that fast but still interesting enough. I doubt they will release it in the US.

#31 Posted by TheWesman (378 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

If you get a PS3 for one game...it's Metal Gear Solid 4.  If you get it for 2 games, the other is LittleBigPlanet.  But if you buy a PS3 and intend to buy 3 games  (and you're 17+ years old)  Yakuza 3 is that third game.

And on a side note, I wish the GB guys would actually play some of them so they would quit saying stuff like "I haven't played them" or  "i don't understand this..." and stuff like that.  RAARRGH!!

#32 Posted by GioVANNI (1240 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

Looks like a bad Japanese movie.   Looks terrible...

#33 Posted by Usagi (317 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

This better come out here because the first two were fantastic games!

#34 Posted by F1 (346 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

Geez, that's a long trailer. I don't own any of the Yakuza games, but this one looks really good.

#35 Posted by YoctoYotta (539 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

Everyone should go out and buy Yakuza 2 and make sure this game gets released out here. 2 has a great story and comprehensive recap of the first game, excellent gameplay, and one of the more satisfying endings I've seen in a game in the last few years. The minigames and sidequests alone are worth picking it up for, the story and fighting is cash money on top of a cake on top of a rolls royce.

#36 Posted by KamasamaK (2389 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

This trailer made me very interested in the game. I'm actually glad it wasn't subbed in case there are any spoilers, which seem to make their way into trailers too often.

#37 Posted by Dan_CiTi (2543 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

Should be a fuckin' great game, like the other two.

#38 Posted by TomA (2523 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

umm ya this game looks tottaly clusterfucked and stupid.

#39 Posted by Manatassi (785 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

I wouldn't mind giving this game a go. Would be nice to get some gameplay footage out there.

Hef, kinda coming on a bit strong there aren't you? Yakuza is a bit cutscene heavy, its just that kind of game. Personally I don't have a problem with that its something I expect from games like MGS and this, I can totally see why some people would be put off by that.

I would say that complaining about the length or the fact that the Trailer is in Japanese is a little silly. It was shown to a Japanese audience at the Japanese games show. Get the context there?

The only thing that bothers me a little is the slightly odd way that people in Japanese games seem to move. It feels a bit weird, especially considering the uncanny valley level of detail they are putting in there.
#40 Posted by Bouke (1396 posts) - 4 years, 5 months ago

Interesting... the cut scenes sure look good, but the in game action sequence you see towards the end, not that great. Is this a sandbox game like GTA? Because i thought it had some open areas but not a entire city like GTA or Saints Row... With a smaller closed off area, you would expect the graphics to look a bit better IMO
If this will be available outside Japan i might pick it pick though.

Awesome, at last!

I'm looking forward to this game but dear God that was long-winded.

I love your avatar. "BOOM BABY BOOM!! I'M THE CRAZY MIDNIGHT BOMBER WHO BOMBS AT MIDNIGHT!"
I haven't tried the two previous Yakuza games, but I really want this to come out here so I can get some mileage out of my PS3.
The guys on the 1UP Show were talking about how the Yakuza games are the closest we'll get to Shenmue 3 and as a Shenmue fanatic I am stoked as hell.

LET'S ALL GO AND PLAY FIRST PERSON SHOOTERS ABOUT AMERICAN SPACE MARINES! Because we simply can't comprehend anything else these days, can we?

Looks good. Might have to pick up a PS3 soon. Just wish I could get the first two games on the system as well, cause all the respect for the series makes me wanna do it right.
