Sega's Yakuza series moves to the PlayStation 3 for its third installment.

Overview

Yakuza 3 is an action game developed by Amusement Vision, and once again it follows the series lead character Kazuma Kiryu. It was released February 26, 2009 in Japan, and is slated for a March 2010 release in the U.S. and Europe. Sega has also been releasing free downloadable content for the game as of March 5, 2009. These downloadable packs contain 29 new costumes for Kiryu, two-player modes for some of the minigames (including darts, golf and billiard), 8 packs of new items and more.

Plot

The Yakuza wars are spreading over to the tropical paradise of Okinawa. After leaving his last base in Kamimuro Chou, Kiryuu Kazuma went to Okinawa and opened an orphanage named Asagao with Haruka. Together with the children they have taken in, the two slowly let go of the violent lives they have led prior to their arrival.

However, the happy days are short lived for the Yakuza are tightly connected with the Japanese government. A shady deal that involves the land which Asagao is built on spurs Kiryuu and Haruka back to their old home town and fights with oppositional Yakuza groups. Fights and political intrigue comes hand in hand.

Graphics

The game features incredibly detailed character models, facial movements, animations, and diverse and detailed environments. This is done to provide the best cinematic experience. As was done with previous games of this type, like Shenmue.

Gameplay

Details are scarce at the moment. What we do know is basically this: The game features huge detailed and interactive environments. The game contains plenty of very fleshed out mini-games and there are many side-quests in the game as well. It seems the game will make use of quick-time events and have a very deep storyline. The game will use quick-time events as well as real-time combat in the battle system.

Installation

This game will require a 5 GB installation on the PlayStation 3.

Reception

The game has gotten huge praise from Famitsu, giving the game a combined score of 38/40 across a panel of 3 who gave it a 10,10, 9. The game sold over 232,000 copies in its first day. First week sales were 372,000 and as of March 19, 2009, RgG 3 had shipped over half a million copies in Japan. The critically acclaimed game was considered to be a sales success in Japan, but how it does in other territories remains to be seen.

Western Release

Early rumors indicated the game would not receive localization for release in the West due to the poor sales of other games in the series in those markets. However, there were later claims localization for the game is currently in progress and it will be released in the US and Europe. Insiders anticipated an announcement could be made at the 2009 Tokyo Game Show as the news that the previous game in the series, Yakuza 2, would be localized was revealed at that same show in 2007. Instead, the announcement of a western release was not made until December 8, 2009.
