Aww yeah can't wait to get this on Thursday

Only one of two Ys games I've never played before. The other obviously being Ys 5 since that's never had a fan translation yet. Kind of sucks Origin is going to be $20 though. I was hoping it would be $15 like the Steam release of Oath in Felghana.

Yeah, I'm pretty excited to try this out too. It's funny though because I didn't even realize it was being released here until it showed up on the front page. Talk about being out of the loop.

Anyway hope it's as enjoyable as Ys Seven and Oath in Felghana. Those games got a lot of love on my PSP.

I am on board.

I'm pretty excited about the Steam release of Origin as well. I was actually planning on playing the fan translation by Figli di Gaucci Production before the official release was announced. XSEED announced their Steam release of Origin a mere 5 months after the English Patch was release, which was pretty surprising. I bet a similar situation will happen with Gemini's translation of Soul Hacker and Atlus's eventual release of the 3DS version.

Also $20 for Ys Origin seems fair since Felghana had already made its money on the PSP.

Man, I remember playing this a whiiiile back, before the translation was nothing more than item descriptions.

Shit was fucking amazing and I cannot wait.

out of curiosity is the fighting in this like a menu final fantasy type rpg or is it like secret of mana where you actually hit the mob?

@tescovee: Ys Origins is an action RPG and it is not menu based. You do hit enemies directly but it is still not exactly like Secret of Mana. Watch the trailer it tells you everything you need to know about the game.

Or check the official website:

Played this with the fan translation and it was fantastic.

@Dagmar: How would you compare it to Seven and OiF?

#10 Posted by ninkendo (124 posts) -

It's pretty similar to OiF. Both Origin and OiF are based off the Ys 6 engine.

Yeah I'm pretty bummed Ys V never got a fan translation......I played I-IV.

I haven't played Seven. I loved Oath in Felghana and kind of wanted more of that so it prompted me to check out Origin. The combat system is as good as Oath, though the game is maybe a little less story driven. I thought the bosses were better than Oath for sure. My only complaint applied to Oath aswell, lack of checkpoints. Losing 20+ minutes of progress is kind of annoying.

@Guided_By_Tigers: A Ys V fan translation is being worked on by the great Aeon Genesis. The project is updated infrequently but it looks like AG is making steady progress.

That's dead and has been for years now. It's been at 80% for at least 4 years. There's a problem with putting the text into the game so he gave up. Most likely no point any longer seeing as how there's a strong chance there'll be a Ys V remake down the line.

That's not completely true. The last update was on May 12, 2011 where they showed this screenshot.

Progess is still being made, just very slowly.

So I am trying to get into new types of games and I saw this on steam and it looks weird to me. So at 20 bucks its worth a shot. Can someone quickly sum up the gameplay mostly the combat?

#17 Posted by kylenalepa (137 posts) -

@Funzzo: Honestly, it's probably best to watch one of the videos on YouTube or posted above for a sense of how the combat is. I'll say this, though - it's very similar to Oath in Felghana, which I bought on a whim after seeing similar YouTube videos... and now I've bought Ys Origin on the date of release. Both games are *amazing* and hard to peg down - sort of like a super fast paced Link to the Past, maybe?

Huh, alright, color me interested.

Did this game have Gamepad support on the steam version, been semi interested in getting a Ys game for awhile but never made the plunge, probably will now with it on steam with gamepad support.

@M_Shini: Store page on Steam lists both Origin and OiF as "Controller Enabled", and I can confirm OiF picked up my wireless 360 controller just fine.

Not tested any of the games before. But the trailer for it on Steam was pretty compelling...
