Zanon is a former slave who now rules the small kingdom of Litonia through the power of his sword, Eclisis. The weapon is a powerful, yet malevolent supernatural artifact that grants its user great strength while slowly corrupting them. Zanon's great will-power has allowed him to retain his sanity longer than most people using the sword would, but only time can tell how long this will last.
Zanon resides in a castle between Bozack and Highland with his 3 loyal generals, Yuri, Veltarna & Grudar. While these generals only possess average power(though Yuri's version of the Thunderfall spell is exceptional), their leader is something else. While he has excellent stats, good spells and high MP, Zanon's greatest asset is his durability which reduces all damage he takes from troops to 1HP.
Defeat or recruit Zanon
Usually Zanon cannot be permanently defeated as he will normally escape when bested, then launch endless attempts to reclaim his castle. To permanently defeat him-
1) Face Zanon at least once in battle
2) At some point the monarch's advisor will discuss Zanon's sword
3) Send a division that doesn't include your monarch to face him
4) Send a division that does include your monarch to Zanon.
5) At some point before, after or during the above, complete Vlad's subquest
6) Following the second battle with Ryskim, you will be prompted to face Zanon again. If defeating him here doesn't resolve things, wait until the domestic then beat him again.
Zanon can only be recruited when playing as Reinhart or Gongos. With Gongos, send him and his 4 starting generals to face Zanon after defeating Ryskim. Reinhart can get Zanon late in the game, regardless of whether or not you do the Vlad subplot.
When recruited, Zanon's attack and defense are reduced to that of a regular, albeit high-end general. Combined with his other advantages, he remains one of the game's best knights, and his only genuine drawback is how late into the game he can be recruited.
Capturing him as Goldark will see he and Yuri permanently imprisoned, while his subplot resolves differently in Junon's scenario.
