Garage Talk 9

Happiness is a warm garage.

Jeff Gerstmann's garage has a lot of things in it, and rather than clean it efficiently, he'd like to slow down and show you some.

Lol, Jeff has (soon to be had) the same garage door opener and really by appearance the roof looks as mine. Heard the plane overhead, I get helicopters myself. Freeway nearby and some other stuff is the draw.

Hope things go as smoothly as possible!

This is a must-watch video! Any time I'm even slightly worried by what other fans are saying about the direction of the site, Jeff comes out and displays his passion and vision for the future and everything seems OK again. Looking forward to future editorial hires especially, on top of more weird shows in the meantime!

What a journey the Garage series has been. Its kind of sad to see it go. Maybe Season 2 of unpacking in the new Garage?

Either way, good luck on the move Jeff G, and take as much time as you need. I know all these issues recently haven't been easy for you.

I do think it would be beneficial if your thoughts on the editorial future of the site were written down somewhere for folks to read.. not every fan / subscriber watches these.. mailer maybe?

Best of luck with the move and everything else! Garage Talk has been just great.

As someone who just recently moved, trash and getting rid of junk was easily the hardest and most bothersome aspect of the move. Those junk removal places are expensive and have a lot of restrictions and specifics. Then donation places have restrictions and things they wont take. So many trips and calls solely for the aspect of getting rid of stuff.

My advice on moving is to do only enough work to pack the stuff you actually care about and/or is super-delicate. Let the moving company handle the rest. You're going to pay through the nose anyway and trying to package everything up yourself isn't worth the hassle.

My parents tried to do the packing the last time they moved and it was pretty awful. They were getting things into boxes almost to the moment the moving van showed up. They nearly ran out of boxes and didn't have enough packing tape which resulted in my mom was having a pretty serious meltdown.

That how I ended up having to drive over to a Walgreens at 2:00 am for supplies. I got up to the register with like 10 rolls of packing tape, some plastic zip ties, a box cutter, and an energy drink. I distinctly remember the look the clerk gave me that said she couldn't decide whether she should congratulate me on a good time or just call the cops.

He seems to say in this stream that the pick up and drop off of his stuff is going to happen in the same day, so I don't think he's going very far.

@tcsajax: Here's the thread by Nick Popovich (Game Director of Slime Rancher, according to his bio) that Jeff mentioned in the video:

https://twitter.com/NickPopovich/status/1426771675354341381

For those who would prefer not to click on a link to Twitter, here's the basic rundown:

  • Nick thought it was odd that people were calling Slime Rancher an "underrated" game that "not many people know about", so he dug into it.
  • Slime Rancher has 98% positive rating on Steam with over 63,000 reviews, and over 10 million people have played it (according to the studio's data, presumably).
  • Total Steam user base is 150 million users, more or less. More people play Roblox as active users than there are Steam users. And phone game users dwarf everyone by a substantial degree.
  • People reading games news are likely part of the tiniest demographic in the gaming world.
  • The thread continues to muse about how Steam could improve to get more visibility on games that the mainstream could potentially fall in love with. But Jeff was more talking about the first portion of the thread so I won't summarize it here.

Based on my interpretation of what Jeff was saying, he's not concluding that he needs to go chase the CoD or Roblox demographics; he would never be able to compete with more SEO-friendly sites anyway (something they discussed when they first built the Bomb). It just got him thinking about what it means to be a website about video games in 2021, or even 2018, a theme he's mentioned several times over the last few months. I'm not going to speculate about his conclusions, but I'm highly interested in seeing the other end of this retooling.

He did a series of videos cleaning out the Garage in his now old house in preparation to move into a bigger house, because of his growing family. He is expecting his second child in September of this year. During the streams he would talk about subjects while showing off different stuff he collected over the course of his gaming journalism career, which is A LOT.

@ghost_cat: As one of those people, I'm satisfied with what he said and how he explained things. I will give him the benefit of the doubt from this point onward.

I'm far too jaded to believe that words alone are "nails in the coffin" to those who doubt the new direction. YMMV.

@jeff Storage Tip: Buy a bunch of daisy-chainable heavy duty shelving and put it into both your garage and storage unit. Then buy a bunch of large heavy duty plastic totes that a multiple of which fit perfectly on the shelves.

I have a bunch of diverse junk and this approach has worked out well for me. The uniformity avoids all the weird stacking problems that lead to poor space utilization and inhibit item retrieval. This approach also eliminates cardboard boxes and gets the junk up off of the floor which helps avoid problems caused by rodents, humidity, and water intrusion.

I couldn't find a link to the exact shelves and totes I bought but they are very similar to the following:

Has there been any word on office plans? Between Bakalar joining "GB West" from NJ, Jason's move to Atlanta, and now Jeff moving (presumably) farther from SF with talk of home office space at the new house, it seems as though any plan for GB to return to a studio setting must almost certainly be out the window. Maybe because it's so obvious, but staff has been really quiet on that front. This isn't a criticism or concern, I'm just curious. I have been really enjoying all the new content lately and am optimistic about the future of the site.

Excited for Jeff to get to the other side of the move and be able to finally hit the ground running on all the stuff he wants to do for the site. Good luck on the move!

Well, that's the thing. Jeff made it clear that the new direction is all on him and nothing to do with RV. So RV is now off the hook and whatever this website becomes in the future, for better or worse, is now on Jeff G alone. Which is why I actually laughed at ghost cat's post before replying. Like I said, for his sake, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Hopefully, it all works out for him.

I'm crossing my fingers that he's moving into a house boat somewhere off the west coast and is going to live a Pirate Radio lifestyle for the rest of his days.

Jeff these are great, I think in another life you would have made a very good game-lead, because the idea rumination with excellent sense of both what you want to create and the limitations inherent to the challenges and setbacks that come with the territory and then, how to make the absolute most out of it. I can't presume why, either your experience with all this so long, proximity and study of game developers and just game study on your own; you become an expert and think about the people before rushing into a confusing product, and if it is confusing, you make it worthwhile, as do the rest of the staff.

Didn't mean that to turn into a thanks note, but it did, so thanks Jeff, (and everyone).

Jeff please don't throw away old PC cases. The retro PC market is crazy right now, and any beige PC case sells for hundreds of dollars, even empty ones as long as there is no rust or cracks.
