    Overview

Street Fighter V is a 2.5D fighting game developed by Capcom (in conjunction with Dimps) and published by Capcom for the PlayStation 4 and PC on February 16, 2016.

The fifth numbered installment of the Street Fighter fighting game series, Street Fighter V builds on its predecessor with a new graphical engine (running on Unreal Engine 4), revamped gameplay mechanics (including a new "V-Gauge" meter, which replaces the "Revenge Gauge" of the previous game and grants special character-specific abilities). It is also the first game in the series to feature cross-platform multiplayer.

Rather than having multiple separate revisions of the game (as with every main installment of the series other than the first), Street Fighter V focuses on having a single installment with regular system and balance updates provided for free. Additional post-release content, including fighters, stages, and costumes, must be purchased either as paid DLC or with an in-game currency known as "Fight Money". Later monetization options include seasonal DLC passes and optional in-game advertisements (which give players additional FM).

Street Fighter V takes place between the events of Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter III, and features much of the cast of previous Street Fighter games (with four new challengers at launch). The main in-game story, called "A Shadow Falls", was released as free DLC on July 1, 2016, and chronicles a Shadaloo plan to launch seven satellites (known as the "Black Moons") to aid M. Bison in his plans for world domination.

The game later received a major revision on January 16, 2018. Dubbed the "Arcade Edition", this version adds new gameplay mechanics, new online and offline modes, and a revamped UI. It also received a minor revision on February 14, 2020 as the "Champion Edition", making several gameplay and balance changes. While all of these changes were included for free, the game itself received a re-release (both downloadable and retail) for each revision, including most DLC content released up to that time.

The game also received an arcade port (as Street Fighter V: Type Arcade) in Japan on March 14, 2019. Running on the PC-based Taito Type X4 hardware and utilizing Taito's NESiCAxLive2 digital distribution service, this version includes online multiplayer support, an updated eight-button control panel (with both "EX" buttons customizable), external USB gamepad support, support for both NESiCA and Amusement IC cards, and an option to link IC cards with CFN accounts to use unlocked alternate costumes from the home version.

A Linux version of the game was announced at launch, but was never released.

    Gameplay

Much of the gameplay in Street Fighter V remains the same as previous installments, featuring a one-on-one fight on a 2D plane/line with a six-button control scheme (three punches of different strengths and three kicks of different strengths).

Returning from Street Fighter IV is the Super Combo Gauge (now known as the three-stock Critical Gauge), which are used for powerful Super Combos (now known as Critical Arts, which utilizes the whole Gauge) and EX Moves (powered-up versions of Special Moves that use one stock of the Gauge and are performed by pressing an additional corresponding Punch/Kick button). Also returning are forwards/backwards dashing, two-button Normal Throws (where throws are performed by pressing both Light buttons), Throw Escapes (where performing a Normal Throw at the right time negates an opponent's Normal Throw), and Counter Hits (where hitting an opponent during their attack's start-up gives extra damage and faster recovery). Additionally, the Guard Meter (now known as the Stun Gauge) returns from Street Fighter Alpha 3, which indicates when the fighter becomes dizzied.

The Revenge Gauge, Ultra Combo, and Focus Attack systems from Street Fighter IV were replaced with the new V-Gauge system. In addition, the game includes many basic core system tweaks:

    • Proximity Attacks have been removed, with fighters performing the same standing normal attack with the same input regardless of how close they are to their opponent. Certain proximity attacks were brought back per-character as Unique Attacks (which usually have a joystick input in addition to the attack button).
    • Directional Air Attacks have been removed, with fighters performing the same jumping normal attack regardless if they are jumping straight up or jumping forwards/backwards.
    • Both Medium and Heavy normal attacks now cause recoverable chip damage (or "white damage") when blocked. Similar to the damage absorbed from Focus Attacks in Street Fighter IV, "white damage" cannot be used to K.O. and can be recovered over time if the fighter does not receive actual damage. Some other attacks, such as V-Reversals, also deal "white damage".
    • Link Combos, where players can combo normal attacks based on the previous attack's recovery animation (rather than animation-cancelling), now have a lenient buffer window to perform, with difficult "1-frame links" (where players only have 1/60th of a second of opportunity to perform) now becoming "3-frame links" (where players now have 1/20th of a second).
    • Special Moves and EX Moves no longer K.O. on chip damage. The only ability that can are Critical Arts.
    • The Quick Stand mechanic from Street Fighter IV is retooled as Recovery, in which players can quickly rise from being knocked down after certain attacks to negate mix-ups. This can be performed as Neutral Recovery by either pressing downwards on the joystick or pressing two Punch buttons simultaneously, or with the new Back Recovery option (which causes a backwards slide) by either pressing backwards on the joystick or pressing two Kick buttons simultaneously. Unlike the previous game, players can now perform Recovery after being thrown or from a standard sweep (unless it was hit as a Crush Counter).
    • New to the series are Crush Counters, in which some Heavy normal attacks and Unique Attacks cause a staggering, launching, knockdown, or knockback effect when landed as a Counter Hit. Which attacks does this and their effects depends on the character, although all characters have a special knockdown effect on their traditional sweeping attack (which is one of the few attacks that disables the Recovery option). In addition, landing this attack fills up a portion of the V-Gauge. To balance this added potency, attacks with the Crush Counter ability are unsafe on block in many situations.

    V-Gauge

    Necalli's V-Skill,
Necalli's V-Skill, "Culminated Power", that allows him to sweep his opponent from a distance

The Revenge Gauge system from Street Fighter IV is replaced with the V-Gauge, a core mechanic of the game that is used to perform two new abilities: V-Reversal and V-Trigger. Season Five added a third ability that also uses this meter, called V-Shift.

Similar to the Revenge Gauge itself, the V-Gauge is a separate meter that fills up as the fighter blocks and receives damage. It is also filled up by performing unique V-Skill abilities (which replaces Focus Attacks from the previous game) and landing Crush Counters. The meter itself has multiple stocks, which varies (1-3) depending on the chosen V-Trigger, and resets between rounds.

    • V-Skill - Performed by pressing both Medium attack buttons (MP+MK), the V-Skill is a character-specific free-to-use action that ranges from unique attacks to parries and projectile-counters. Successfully using it also generates a portion of the V-Gauge. Since Season Four, players can choose an alternate V-Skill for each character during character selection.
    • V-Reversal - Performed while in blockstun by tapping forward on the joystick and pressing either all three Punch or Kick buttons according to character (f+3P or f+3K), the V-Reversal is a character-specific guard-cancelling action that ranges from counter-attacks (that knockdown or knockback opponents and deal "white damage") to evasive movement. It costs a single stock of V-Gauge to perform and instantly recovers a portion of the character's Stun Gauge.
    • V-Shift - Performed by pressing Heavy Punch and Medium Kick together (HP+MK), the V-Shift is a special universal evasive action that allows the fighter to perform a backwards dash with temporary invincibility. While it costs a single stock of V-Gauge to perform normally, one-half of that stock is recovered if the V-Shift is timed to evade an attack (which also increases its invincibility frames). During a V-Shift, players can input the command again to continue into a lunging knockdown counter-attack known as the V-Shift Break. Added in Season Five.
    • V-Trigger - Performed by pressing both Heavy attack buttons (HP+HK), the V-Trigger is a character-specific limited-use action seen as a more-powerful version of the V-Skill. It consists of either a unique attack or maneuver, or a limited-time power-up (which enhances certain attacks or allows use of new special moves). It costs a full V-Gauge to perform, and can be activated by animation-cancelling various normal and special attacks. Since Season Three, players can choose an alternate V-Trigger for each character during character selection.

    Revisions

Unlike many popular fighting games, Capcom has taken a more "wait-and-see" approach to adjusting the balance of SFV. Outside of the occasional minor bug fixes and a few system-wide attempts to reduce the efficacy of option-selects (exploits in the way a game handles multiple inputs to ensure an optimal result in multiple situations), no balance changes were made over the course of the 2016 Capcom Pro Tour season.

With nearly a year's worth of tournament results and footage to reference. Capcom made sweeping changes to the game balance in preparation for the 2017 Pro Tour season. Outside of various buffs and nerfs to try to bring the cast more in line, Capcom adopted a few key ways they wanted to change the game across the board for season 2:

    • Recovery after successful throws - the ability to get guaranteed midscreen pressure after a successful throw was reduced across a majority of the cast
    • Strong anti-air light attacks - the potency of light attacks as anti-airs was reduced
    • Invincible reversal reliance - characters no longer had access to fully invincible reversals without spending meter

At the end of May, 2017, Capcom released another balance update for season 2. Several characters that were underperforming after their season 2 adjustments had those changes reduced or reversed. Invincible reversals were further normalized and changes were made to remove the jump-back throw tech option-select technique.

    Arcade Edition

On October 5, 2017, Capcom officially announced the game would be receive a large-scale update in 2018 named "Arcade Edition". In addition to the new Arcade Mode and the belated Extra Battle Mode, the Training Mode received numerous usability updates to provide players with live frame data. Each character received a secondary V-Trigger to be selected before battle, and beyond the individual balance tweaks a few cast-wide changes were made:

    • Decreased damage on V-Trigger cancel combos
    • Increased recovery on command grabs
    • Increased reliance on specific normals to anti-air

Early April, 2018, shortly after the start of the Capcom Pro Tour for that year, a large balance update was released. In addition to various balance changes across the cast, a number of broader changes were made to the game as a whole:

    • Decreased damage on Crush Counter combos
    • Further decreased anti-air capability of light attacks
    • Increased throw strengths relative to a character's ability to pressure the opponent following a successful throw

Timed with the grand finals of the 2018 Capcom Pro Tour, the season 4 balance update was released in December alongside new character Kage. Most characters received extensive adjustments, some new moves, and a few smaller tweaks were made on a baseline mechanical level:

    • Attacks absorbed by armor that reduce the white-life gauge to zero will KO the opponent
    • Characters take 1.2x the normal damage from the first attack they receive during the recovery of a frame 1 reversal
    • All characters can now be hit out of their V-Trigger activation animation, as opposed to some

During the leadup to Evolution 2019, a character trailer was released detailing the Season 4 Character Pass which would include E. Honda, Lucia, and Poison to the cast of SFV.

    Champion Edition

At the North American Regional Finals for the Capcom Pro Tour on November 11, 2019, the next iteration of SFV known as "Champion Edition" was announced. Intended to be an all-encompassing version, both the standalone package and upgrade package for existing owners came with every character and nearly all unlockable and downloadable content available.

As part of the lead-up to the release of Champion Edition, the game was updated on December 16, 2019 with the season 5 balance patch. Gill was also added to the game, in addition to an all new set of secondary V-Skills for the entire roster. Some of the broader changes included the following:

    • Universally increased the health and stun values
    • Reduced the ability of characters to follow up throws in the corner
    • Allowed attacks with special animations when blocked to have the same advantages as other attacks

After the positive reception around Champion Edition, Capcom announced that they would be filling out the season 5 roster with another 5 DLC characters, and would continue to support the game with new updates and features. The rest of season 5 began in earnest on February 22, 2021 with the release of Dan, another swathe of balance changes, and the all-new V-Shift system mechanic.

    Fight Money

Fight Money is the name of the in-game currency that is earned purely through gameplay. The primary ways of earning Fight Money include completing daily challenges, leveling up individual characters by spending time with them in various game modes, and defeating special opponents in Extra Battle.

Players can also earn Fight Money by enabling in-game advertisements which can appear on 3 different stages, in place of a loading screen before a match, or on the characters themselves in a modified version of their default costumes.
