    Overview

Z1 Battle Royale (also known as H1Z1: Battle Royale on PlayStation 4 and formerly known as H1Z1: King of the Kill, H1Z1, and H1Z1: Battle Royale) is a multiplayer survival-shooter developed by Daybreak (later NantG) and published digitally by Daybreak for the PC (via Steam) on February 28, 2018. It was originally released as an early access title on February 18, 2016, was made free-to-play on March 8, 2017, and was later released for the PlayStation 4 on August 7, 2018.

Based on the "battle royale" mod for ArmA II and ArmA III, Z1 puts a very large group of players (upwards to 150 players) in a match where they parachute down on a large uninhabited island. Whether or not this mode is played in teams, players must scavenge weapons, armor, and other items and fight to the death with no respawning and a contracting "safe zone" (in which areas outside of it are filled with a toxic cloud that slowly kill players).

    Name Changes

Originally known as H1Z1: King of the Hill, the game was the multiplayer mode of H1Z1, the 2015 MMO survival-horror shooter. It became so popular that it was spun-off into its own separate game. Eventually, Daybreak Games renamed King of the Hill into simply H1Z1 and changed the original MMO survival game to "Just Survive." Later, in an attempt to capitalize on the burgeoning battle royale genre, the title was changed again from H1Z1 to "H1Z1: Battle Royale."

In 2018, NantWorks, a technology company based in California, invested in Daybreak Games. In late 2018, NantWorks' mobile games division (known as NantG) assumed control of development on the PC version of H1Z1. On March 6, 2019, the game was relaunched on PC as "Z1 Battle Royale" or simply "Z1BR" while the PS4 version is still handled by Daybreak internally.
